Interesting article in the Guardian this morning.
Labour MPs and activists say their campaign literature has too much emphasis on our national flag. Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently .
Comments please.

Blimey, are these comments for real or have aliens landed?

Or is somebody talking to themselves?

I don't know, but comments have nothing at all to do with the opening topic which was about Labour MPs criticising the overuse of the union flag by Labour leaders...

Where the racist bit about non natives objecting to the use of the union flag crept in I don't know, but it's certainly being pursued with gusto, isn't it grin

@PaddyAnn is right of course, but I don't think there's a flag in the world that is blameless if you look at the history it represents.
With regard to the Union Jack, (I'm an Australian First Nations gran, and I comment from afar, so excuse my observational status) it's the British flag, so don't be ashamed of it. As flags go, it's done a lot of good as well as the rape and pillage. The style of democracy it represents is something to appreciate from here, and I shudder to imagine the flags that COULD have been flying over our own beautiful land. Countries have flags, yours is the Union Jack.
Don't toss babies out with bathwater, or act like the petulant teenager who can't forgive parents for forcing him/her to potty train too early and blaming all its neuroses on them.

This isn't about our right to display/respect the flag. It's about the perception among a section of the electorate that the flag is being used against them. And, of, course, to an extent it is. Nationalism is a broad spectrum. Olympic athletes wear the flag, so does the BNP. Illustration from their website attached, for anyone who needs reminding of their position.

In the long run, try to improve inclusivity. In the short run, if market research reveals the flag to be a negative image to some voters, take that on board. You can't change anything until you're elected!

Buttonjugs Wed 03-Apr-24 12:50:49

The problem is that the far right have adopted the Union flag as a symbol. If you don’t like the situation then something needs to be done about them.

ReadyMeals Wed 03-Apr-24 12:55:23

It's just a pretty pattern, or a bit of cloth depending on the context. I don't care where it is or isn't seen. I don't even notice it unless someone mentions it!

I don't care about flags, I don't care about nationalism or tribalism. I'm not proud to be British. I wanted to be European.

This 👆 I also believe patriotism can be dangerous. It leads to separatism. Look at America with its “we’re the greatest country in the world” and look at their foreign policy! Being British is not better than being German, French, Thai, or Indian. Flag and Nation worship is not healthy! I do however like the EU flag as it signifies a ‘coming together and working together’. Thankfully, I have my Irish passport, so I’m still European and before anyone shouts that I’m not British, so I wouldn’t get it, I am actually. I was born in England, to an English (bigoted) Mother and Irish Father. I was raised in England. The world would be a better place if people stopped being preoccupied with their own little insignificant (especially in our case since we became an irrelevant little island on the world stage after Brexit) bit of the earth.

Just when I’ve been debating about giving Labour a chance in the up coming election they go put the kibosh on it 🤷‍♀️

I hope this is a joke!

Brownnow. I think your last sentence is nearer the truth.

Lilyflower Wed 03-Apr-24 13:19:52

My village got a flagpole in time for the king's coronation and flies the Union Jack. It's fantastic! Everyone loves it and, since I can see it on the green from my front windows, it tells me which way the wind's blowing. Actually and metaphorically.

So we are now ruled by the sensitivities of ethnic minorities who choose to live in this country but don’t like the national flag?

I think it's been that way for a while now!
I think we'd do well to take a leaf out of the US book (for once) in that their flag is flown all over the place especially holidays, their children are taught to honour the flag , forces personal are respected and immigrants to the country are expected to conform to their rules.

furzeacre579 Wed 03-Apr-24 13:29:50

well why dont you move to France or wherever then

furzeacre579 Wed 03-Apr-24 13:31:24

Your post of 12.34 also reported ROBRDEL. You seem to have arrived here just to insult others.

Blimey. That’s the sort of comment that I haven’t heard since the referendum sad.

Robin202 Wed 03-Apr-24 14:42:09

What nonsense! I cant imagine any other country allowing their flag to be decimated by some leftie, woke ideology. Its a blatant assault on our national emblem.

DrWatson Wed 03-Apr-24 15:19:13

For PaddyAnn, do you have to pollute these usually sensible pages with that ill-informed twaddle about flags? "Connotations"? "Many here have no wish to be associated with it ."? Utter tosh -- think back to the Queen's Jubilee, bunting and flags everywhere, but if you want to try and quantify that "many" and find someone who thought back to George Washington's ancestors giving rise to slavery in the USA, or colonial activity in Oz or NZ, then gave the bunting a miss, DO let us all know how "many" that was?

And IF you want to harp on about colonial crimes, look up the amount and volume of massacres in India BEFORE the British got there, and after it was released to independence. All the major European countries did some colonising several hundred years back, it's what people did then, as so little was known about the world, and attitudes were vastly different.

Given the activities of the Spanish, committing mass genocide in Latin and Central America, I presume from your use of "many" that just about nobody ever goes on holiday to modern-day Spain, in a continuing protest. Oh, hang on though. . . .

Re your agony about Scottish governance, well, go and research what a mess Nicola Sturgeon made of things. The last few polls I saw suggested that the Indy movement support had severely declined of late?

Jolly good luck if it does ever happen though, I've yet to see any proponent answer the tricky questions about developing new systems to run all aspects of the necessities for a country's admin, energy, defence, policing, pensions, social security, the whole works, or would you plan renting them from England?

BUT -- if it's any consolation, I'd guess that the way to get Independence might well be to have the vote opened up to the rest of the UK?!

CarS Wed 03-Apr-24 15:28:44

Sometimes you get a glimpse of a Dystopian future of our country if we give in to this type of anti British claptrap. British Values will have no meaning at all soon. I used to be proud, but it is being knocked out of me by this type of thinking. Very sinister. Ask a Ukranian soldier what their flag means or dont ask people to fight for their country and what values we still hold

rowyn Wed 03-Apr-24 15:32:42

It really puzzles me. Thousands of (presumably) Europeans risk their lives in order to live in the UK, whilst lots of so called British people vociferously denigrate this country but don't emigrate.
I wonder why?

rowyn Wed 03-Apr-24 15:39:09

And, incidentally, my sympathy for those living in Scotland
who , thanks to the new SNP Hate Crime legislation, must NEVER say that a trans woman is of the male sex.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 03-Apr-24 15:59:49

Ridiculous idea. Stating a fact becomes a hate crime.
