Interesting article in the Guardian this morning.
Labour MPs and activists say their campaign literature has too much emphasis on our national flag. Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently .
Comments please.

Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently.

Many British people currently equate the Israel Flag, Palestinian Flag or the Ukrainian Flag with war in a country that is not ours. Is it forbidden to fly them here?

zakouma66 Sat 30-Mar-24 17:36:06

If you don't like our flag don't live here / You always get extremists in all walks of life.

Interesting.

Allsorts Sat 30-Mar-24 17:30:57

If people don’t like our flag don’t live here, I am of the opinion that to enter this and live here country you swear allegiance to it and learn tge language or find somewhere that suits you better. As for Paddyann and Amber you want to get your facts straight you are so intent on being angry on so many things, for example if Scotland became independent, which most don’t want, would you still expect handouts from Westminster. A large part of Scotland is uninhabited do you really think you could be self sufficient, you have a beautiful country you are not threatened by us I don’t know why this small Island cannot just work together and celebrate our differences as most do. You always get extremists in all walks of life.

Oh dear!
Flagpoles.

I honestly don’t understand why anyone needs to fly a flag - what’s the point? I’m not proud of this country at the moment it’s going down the toilet in more ways than one.

Well, we've just been out and on the way and returning we passed the local primary school where there are two flafpgpoles in the grounds. Only one flag is flying, the Welsh flag.

Is this nationalism or patriotism?

I don't care about flags, I don't care about nationalism or tribalism. I'm not proud to be British. I wanted to be European.

So do i

You ARE both European.
Me too.
😁

It's strange how some seem to think Brits were only ever European for the 47 years we were members of the EU, the blink of an eye in time. By that thinking there were only Europeans from 6 countries in the beginning.

If we're to get so far away from national identities why stop at a continent surely we should be identifying as earthians or worldians grin?

As I did when I was a child. A child of the universe, a Universian, constantly walking round with a crick in my neck from stargazing and filling in I Spy books.

Well Europe is a geographical continent which Britain is a part of but doesn't haven't alot of clout any more and has
been sidelined from major 'European Union' decisions.
Interesting my comments raise such feelings.

They raise the feelings of amusement at the things you wrote, that’s all.
We are part of Europe not a third world country. You are annoyed that we left the EU, but you live in France so what’s the beef?
On the subject of our national flag, if anyone objects to it then they can do the other thing.Probably some nitwit in the LP , an activist, or maybe more than one are over thinking the so called sensitivities of ethnic minorities in case they lose votes.

I’ve no problem with love and pride in my country. Than I read nonsense about ‘us’ sleepwalking into sharia law, that in certain quarters Christmas and Easter is frowned. I’m just back from a Sainsbury shop where Muslims shopping for the end of fast for Ramadan and a mixture of people doing a special Easter shop (lamb, eggs, chocolates) were happily mixing, admiring each other children, helping older customers - where do all these people who think were being taken over by malign forces live? My town is deprived not wealthy by the way

they don't live in our towns, obviously.

Rosie51 Sat 30-Mar-24 17:01:30

zakouma66 I am well aware that Geographically the UK is part of Europe what makes someone European other than living in a country within the continent of Europe?
I voted remain as I assume you did, but I didn't lose my European status because the Brexit vote won. Do you deny European status to all the other countries who aren't part of the EU?

half pint, interesting that you don’t seem to understand the outcomes of brexit

... nor the difference between a third world country and a third country.

Though since we left the EU, it does sometimes feel like we're on the path to becoming the former...

Apologies for a time delay in replying, I went out.

I don't feel ruled by ethnic minority sensitivities. Who are the people that feel so upset that they need to be ushered towards Dover?

I'm not sure who is frowning at the thought of Christmas and Easter.Who is attacking our democracy and insisting on Sharia law?

I am well aware that Geographically the UK is part of Europe.

Jaberwok Sat 30-Mar-24 15:06:07

James V1th and 1st instigated a combined national flag in 1606, consisting of the flags of England, Scotland and Ireland. At one time only union flags flown on the Jackstaff of a ship were known as Union Jacks, land flags were known as Union Flags. In the early part of the 20th century, the Admiralty let it be known that this rule was being relaxed and that the flag could be called either, or, wherever it was being flown. In certain quarters, Christmas is frowned upon, Easter too, now our national flag! I know we're a tolerant nation, but surely this is going too far? Criticise the French tricolor? Don't think that would be very well received!

Namsnanny Sat 30-Mar-24 14:27:37

Of course you are easybee most are.
I was just making the point that our flag needs a make over. A pull back from the far right slur.
A less emotive response.
Because it is just shorthand to represent the peoples of this island.

But maybe that is an illusion.
The flag of any country needs to represent a set of values, which is why some are trying hard to label UJ with far right, or militaristic only values.

As Glorianny made the point, she believes in globalisation not individual nations. No boarders.
To reach that goal, one first has to discredit the original society.
So usurping the flag is one of the first and obviously most prominent ways of getting there.

I've wandered all over this topic haven't I? 🤣🤣
And probably not made much sense either.

Strange that some on here think they are still European when Europe since Brexit has put the label and restrictions of a 'third world ' country when you try to enter.

The EU can decide we come from Mars if they want to, it doesn’t mean we do. Perhaps the EU Parliamentarians and the EU Commissioners need to do a GCSE in Geography!

Anyway the EU have not decided we’re a third world country because that obviously is not true, but they have designated the UK as a third country, along with every other country in the world that is not a member of the EU.

Europe is more than the EU. I’ve entered eu states many times since we left. No problems: but then I have travelled a lot around the world where you can get the 3rd degree from border guards so I do have the experience to compare.

The Union flag is my country's flag and I am proud of it.

Namsnanny Sat 30-Mar-24 13:57:00

MissAdventure

I think the union jack will have been hijacked only if people give in, and no longer fly it or wave it, for fear of being branded as something they have no allegiance with.

Your right ofcourse, but I must confess I wouldn't choose to be the only gay UJ waving house in the village. (Obscure ref to a comedy Sketch, for those who are mystified by this post😄)
So I think that makes me a coward.
Perhaps I can convince myself I'm keeping my powder dry for a bigger battle?🤔
