Interesting article in the Guardian this morning.
Labour MPs and activists say their campaign literature has too much emphasis on our national flag. Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently .
Comments please.

Namsnanny you forgot the huge TV screen with Sky subscription, latest iPhone, designer trainers, fags and other drugs of choice. Just a pity they don't spend some of it on contraception to limit the number of children they have 🙄

Jesus! Have you any idea how bigoted you sound?

🤔

Did you know how daft your post is, Stella14?

I suppose it must be fun posting little flags and saying silly things.

What do you particularly enjoy about flag waving?

I love it!!

I hate flag waving and patriotic gesturing. I think most flags are intended to create divisions between countries and certainly do nothing to create harmony.

Absolutely 👍

Do you both avoid vegetables and fruit with little Union flag stickers on them too?

Galaxy Thu 04-Apr-24 18:41:04

I dont do flags but I am capable of understanding that some people might do things that I dont do. And amazingly I can cope with that.

Galaxy Thu 04-Apr-24 19:08:42

I should get a medal. Or at least my own flag.

I could design one with the Milky Way on an indigo blue background, or failing that eat a milky way and put the empty wrapper on a lolly stick. Or are you named for galaxy chocolate, I could do an empty wrapper of that if you prefer? grin

What is purl clutching? Or am I being obtuse?

Trying not to drop stitches whilst knitting!

Dinahmo Thu 04-Apr-24 21:21:58

Namsnannyyou made me laugh.

don't forget the white thighs, very short skirts, muffin tops and white stilletos!

We are bringing out the worst in ourselves I think!

Galaxy Thu 04-Apr-24 21:23:13

I think an empty wrapper of chocolate encapsulates me perfectly. grin

When knitting a flag

If too many stitches were dropped, the flag wouldn’t fly. The wind would go straight through the holes 😮

If you go and live in another country you take on board there culture and law.
I’m proud to be English and if I want to wave our flag then so be it!!
It seems more snd more minorities want to take over and erode our way of life.
We’re too soft.
If you don’t like the way we do things here then go to a country that does.
Soon we won’t even be able to express our opinion without being gagged!!!

😃

You'd have to use 3 or 3 ply as well, otherwise it would need a gale to stop it from drooping with the weight.

What about one of those knitted swimming costumes in a Union Jack design?

Callistemon21 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:18:21

2 or 3 ply!

I don't think that's the question though.

Should politicians take over our flag for political purposes?

I don't think they should.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:27:05

If the politicians are British, English, Welsh, Scottish or Northern Irish why shouldn’t they be seen with their flag in the background?

Callistemon21 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:29:33

Because Rachel Reeves is not MP for a Welsh constituency.

Callistemon21 Fri 05-Apr-24 12:31:41

I still don't think any political campaigner, MP, Councillor, should claim the Union flag as a symbol of their own particular party.

If the PM is speaking on behalf of the nation then that is different.

That I agree with.

If standing in front of their own flag I cannot see it as a problem.

I’m just going to root out my leopard print leggings. It’s time I gave them an airing.

I've got a Lp blouse you can borrow, it's still chilly out.

Even if you are laughing at yourself.🙂

Yes, we really don’t need a flag to tell us when any politician based in our own country is talking to us, because we know who they are, and we know where we live. It’s the use of the flag in attempts to emphasise that the politician/party is being patriotic and doing ‘the right thing’ that I object to, when they try to own it as a political symbol of their party.

Rachel Reeves will be Chancellor of Exchequer, for Wales as well as England
