Interesting article in the Guardian this morning.
Labour MPs and activists say their campaign literature has too much emphasis on our national flag. Many ethnic minorities equate the flag with the far right, so it should not be shown as prominently .
Comments please.

I hate flag waving and patriotic gesturing. I think most flags are intended to create divisions between countries and certainly do nothing to create harmony.

Callistemon21 Wed 03-Apr-24 23:26:46

But here goes anyway 😂

It's about the overuse of it in a political culture war and the fact that some minorities 'might' find its past association with a far right anti immigration organisation a bit chilling.

Then it's about time we, the ordinary people of the United Kingdom, reclaimed it for its proper purposes like other countries.

Blimey, I’ve only just returned to this thread from yesterday. I don’t know what to say so I think I won’t say anything.

The concept that people who disagree with you just 'don't understand ' is a part of the culture war which you too are waging.

I'm not waging a culture war. Just amazed that people can't stick to the point. It's quite bizarre. And, with the exhortations to 'go and live somewhere else if you don't like it', decidedly unpleasant.

I haven't noticed anyone 'disagreeing' with me, either. They're just on a completely different road..

No, you don't understand, Artois, but neither do many contributors to this thread. It's not about being proud or otherwise of the union flag. It's about the overuse of it in a political culture war and the fact that some minorities 'might' find its past association with a far right anti immigration organisation a bit chilling.

The USA has had a deliberate policy of teaching and embedding attachment to its flag. It isn't something the British do.

Arto1s Wed 03-Apr-24 18:50:53

I left the UK over 30 years ago and have lived in the US ever since. The Stars and Stripes is flown proudly from many homes, businesses, etc. It is generally respected, and there are rules as to when and how it is flown. I am saddened by this post which has engendered such harsh comments. What is so wrong with being proud of the flag which represents your country? I don’t understand…….

We just need a little Welsh Dragon in the middle 😁

Just an aside..our flag is the Union Flag .
It is the Union Jack if flown on a ship!

It is nicknamed the Union Jack as it was first commissioned by James I (Jacques).

RN ships fly the Union Jack only when in harbour, at anchor, or if the Monarch or an Admiral is on board when at sea.

Otherwise RN ships fly the Ensign when at sea.

PS - he was Scottish, a Stuart.

minniemouse Wed 03-Apr-24 17:58:35

I am a proud Scot firstly, but equally proud Brit !

minniemouse Wed 03-Apr-24 17:56:08

I would like everyone else to know that the views and vitreole of Paddyanne 54 do not/ absolutely do not represent the majority of Scots who voted, democratically, to remain in the Union !

I'm proud to be British and fly the Union Jack!! Labour, Conservatives, Liberals, they're all wokes!!! Frightened of what ethnic minorities, etc might do!!! Love our flag, love our country or get out!!!

I can't honestly say that I "love" our country (although I'm extremely relieved that it's how it is rather than some other countries). The problem, for me, in "getting out" is that I was born here, as were my ancestors going back many generations and I have no claim to any other nationality. Where should I go?

zakouma66 Wed 03-Apr-24 17:05:52

Has anybody ever, ever heard an immigrant say something unpleasant about the flag?

Just wondered.

Before Paddyann has a meltdown for your very tiny, understandable, quite insignificant error, it's Calton Hill, Edinburgh.

I wish things were simple .
Anyone spouting an idea about things that to many of us are simply just traditional but portray things with any degree of negativity seems to grow legs and run amok. This saddens me deeply. I just want to live in a kind inclusive world where we can all celebrate our differences but I fear Cuckoo land has yet to be found.

Of course, there were no Scottish slave traders, no rapists, piliagers, murders. If you want to kerp living in the past try looking at the Vikings when invading Scotland, rapists, piliagers, murderers with many females captured and transported as slaves all over with them. Yet, Scandinavians are held in high regard by many in Scotland. Perhaps all the benefit from bygone days paid off for them.

brummie Wed 03-Apr-24 16:40:27

Well done paddyann54. I agree with you on every point. This country has a shocking history and an astonishing lack of moral compass is currently evident.

gagsy Wed 03-Apr-24 16:20:36

People are entitled to their opinions. I am proud of the Union flag and people who come voluntarily to live here must accept how we live. Everyone who comes here has freedom of worship, movement, access to education and healthcare. If this is abhorrent to them they should find somewhere more to their liking.

Bloody hell, where are you all coming from? It is very obvious that my original comment about the union flag being adopted by the extreme right wing/brexiteers etc is correct. There have been some truly loathsome comments on this thread.
