Strange that some on here think they are still European when Europe since Brexit has put the label and restrictions of a 'third world ' country when you try to enter.

The EU can decide we come from Mars if they want to, it doesn’t mean we do. Perhaps the EU Parliamentarians and the EU Commissioners need to do a GCSE in Geography!

Anyway the EU have not decided we’re a third world country because that obviously is not true, but they have designated the UK as a third country, along with every other country in the world that is not a member of the EU.

A lot of fuss about nothing. It’s our flag, those of us who live in Britain anyway. Every country in the world has a national flag and so do we. I really don’t understand why anyone from far right through to far left, and every hue on the way, needs to feel threatened by a flag. It’s normal to have a national flag. What are we supposed to do? Be the only country in the world that doesn’t have a flag, because it might offend or upset someone? There are a lot more things in the world to get upset about.

For those who are offended by paddyann’s posts, do what I do and don’t read them.

I don’t think the Welsh flag has been used as a political weapon in the way the Union Jack has. I can’t speak for the Scottish flag, but in Wales our flag still belongs to the people, it’s a symbol of Welsh and proud - not really to do with politics at all.

Oreo I think you can thank Farage and Yaxley Lennon for dislike of the Union Flag. I do like to see St Piran's flag though. DD has it in her kitchen.

If life is so wonderous for you fellow workers Oreo ,why did most EU residents go home? Not scientific of course but we heard Polish often here in my small town.

I think it’s best to ask ourselves, and to be honest here, do posters not like the Saltire showing when a leader is speaking, or the Welsh dragon? Is all the dislike only there when the Union flag is shown/ flown?

We try not to think about the English conquerors who built the castle in the 1200s to keep us Welsh out - and now we encourage the English to visit and spend their money supporting our economy! Croeso!

Seeing the Union Flag draped everywhere when our "leaders" are addressing us always reminds me of Trump hugging the Stars and Stripes. Surely they used to be able to appear without having to be supported by a flag?

The only time I look for a flag on food is when the British Asparagus comes in, because I refuse to spend money on little stalks flown in from Chile. I was delighted this week to find Italian tomatoes in Aldi. Even in the winter they have more flavour.

And this has what exactly to do with the flag and the LP?

I work part time in a care home where some of the staff are foreign, from different countries in Europe.They took up the offer of being able to stay here after Brexit and are still working here happily.
Your friend who was in nursing could have stayed on if she wanted to, nobody was ‘sent home’ cos of Brexit, millions opted to stay.It was the Covid pandemic that had lots of EU workers deciding to go home to be with their families at that worrying time.

She was a he. And he did stay on.

Has it occurred to you, Oreo, that those EU nationals who stayed were not necessarily made of 'sterner stuff'. Many had no choice but to stay. MaizieD and Maybee are correct when they say it's pointless trying to explain.

I would like to see it flown more, council buildings and schools and all public buildings, it’s a cheerful looking flag after all.

Perhaps others were more tough if ignoramuses told them to go home? All I can say is that literally millions of EU people working in the UK opted to stay here when given the chance.

I don't think you read what MayBee actually said. The nurse she wrote about was made to feel extremely unwelcome, being constantly told to 'go home'.

But then, MayBee also said that it was pointless telling stories like this because they are just dismissed. I think that you and Freya have both proved that today...

No there was always very little chance of Corbyn being PM. But Starmer absolutely wants to put plenty of distance between himself and Corbyn, thankfully.

Until the votes were counted nobody really knew how well or badly Corbyn would do.Thankfully he did badly.
This time is different, we have a good candidate in Starmer.
People were worried by Corbyn and his friendships with terrorist groups including Hezbollha and the IRA and also being weak where Russia is concerned.
The LP need to show all that crap is over, hence using the Union flag to show patriotism to the people they want to win over.

Thank you, MaizieD. I arrived in this country in 1971. During the referendum I received quite a few silly and childish comments from some people. They made me feel uncomfortable. They also surprised me because during all the years I had lived and worked here nobody had suggested it was time for me to pack my bag. Could you just accept that Freya?

Did you say you are Swedish? Not in the EU are they?
The people in the UK opted to leave the EU, a political and economic group, they didn’t opt to leave the continent of Europe.

You’re obviously not aware of how many people were told to go home after the result of the referendum. I know someone, a nurse whose main ambition in life had been to work in the UK who ended up having a nervous breakdown over it. However, stories like this seem to be being dismissed by people so there’s no point mentioning it. I know the toxic atmosphere that Brexit created but it seems to be a figment of my imagination…

I don’t mind a bit of draping around with our flag, it is our own flag after all.
Starmer wants to reassure the public, after the near miss of Comrade Corbyn being in charge, that the country will be safe in the hands of Labour now.

I don't think Johnson's 80+ seat majority when he stood against Corbyn could ever be described as a 'near miss' of Comrade Corbyn

Well Europe is a geographical continent which Britain is a part of but doesn't haven't alot of clout any more and has
been sidelined from major 'European Union' decisions.
Interesting my comments raise such feelings.

just to point out that the 'third country' status, and being sidelined from major EU decisions was as a result of Brexit, not a random act of spite by the other members of the EU, if that is what you are trying to infer.

I am not a sensitive ethnic minority, whatever your interpretation of that is, but I do see the Union Flag and certainly the flag of St.George as being adopted by the more unpleasant side of the extreme right wing of politics. Sad of course, but I do associate excessive flag waving with the right wing, 'take back control' Brexit faction.

You are European because you are (I think) British, not because you live in France. Not at any time because we were in the EU. Europe is a continent and Britain is part of that continent. So is Russia, so is Albania, so is Montenegro, so is Moldova, and also a number of other countries. The EU is a political organisation. nothing to do with what or who is European, because Europe is defined by geography not politics. I’m surprised this still has to be explained eight years on.

I think they have a special relationship within the EU but are not actual members? No time to google am off to prepare a big meal for later now.
