The matter of Angela Rayner's house sale isn't going away.....

Angela Rayner is now to be investigated for breaking electoral law. It seems she has said that she married, and then lived in her ex council house for the next four years, while her husband lived in his nearby ex council house with her brother. Neighbours at her address said that her brother lived in her house alone, and that he referred to her as his landlady. This issue seems to be getting bigger by the day - surely electoral rolls show where people are registered to vote, and this should clarify the matter.

Angela Raynor by dubious methods, has robbed a family of having a home. One each for her and her husband

In my view, the more I read about this the more I understand that this will almost certainly prove to be a non-story trumped up by desperate Tories.

The police were correct the first time around, and this further investigation is frankly a complete waste of time and money. They cannot follow up the alleged election offence because the ability to investigate has time lapsed.

With regard to the CGT issue, it is almost certain that HMRC would not be interested, and the suggestion that there was tax evasion is really desperate.

Whether Rayner has the correct accent, uses the correct language and is effective as an MP is entirely subjective. But judging by some of the comments on this thread, her effectiveness to irritate rather like JR Mogg is obvious.

Wondering if some language is more "acceptable" if it comes from a man

It's not that it's more 'acceptable', it's more that Rayner's language is not without precedent.

I have no doubt that similar language has been used from time to time by politicians over the intervening years, it's just not so well remembered.

It possibly depends whom it's directed at. hmm

I'm glad you did. It's easy to forget that if the Conservatives had won the 1945 election, we probably wouldn't have an NHS. Bevan campaigned tirelessly (and against opposition) for the proposals of the Beveridge Report to be implemented.

growstuff Nye had a Welsh accent , was a coal miner and son of a coal miner.

My father, grandfather and g grandfather had pneumoconiosis,

Anniebach I was being sarcastic. I have respect for Nye Bevan.

Anniebach Sat 13-Apr-24 23:15:05

I care deeply about the NHS, Nye was angry , the conservatives
voted against it, led by Churchill .

Is it anger which stirs Angela Rayner

Nye was a family friend, my grandfather supported Nye’s fight for the NHS, personal but it needs to be said

- my Grandfather,Father and uncle paid for my aunt, grandfather’s daughter, to have gold injections for arthritis , my grandmother had abdominal pains, didn’t speak of it because of costs, appendix, she died age 52.

“Nye Bevan
What is Toryism but organised spivvery? … No amount of cajolery can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party … So far as I am concerned they are lower than vermin.”

Thank you Anniebach for citing this quote from Nye Bevan. I disagree with those on here saying it’s ‘disgraceful’. Of course, they are entitled to their opinions, just as we are entitled to ours. I support you Anniebach.

What role does anger have in creating social change?

Bevan witnessed the consequences of poverty, despair, and misery inflicted on working class people by past Tory governments. No wonder he was angry.

It was his anger that drove his entirely rational responses to infant mortality, disease, industrial illnesses and accidents leading to the early deaths of many working class men and women.

It was his anger at class injustice which drove him to overcome the repeated barriers put up by the Tories and the British Medical Association to his campaign for a National Health Service.

His model for the NHS came from his working class experience and organisation from South Wales and many working class and voluntary organisations across the country.

I doubt that there is any one of us, whatever out political stripe, who is not thankful that we have the NHS.

But for Bevan’s anger at the Tories and his determination to keep fighting their opposition, the NHS might not have come into being.

I can’t believe people think it’s ok to criticise Angela Rayners accent, good heavens, , don’t we have more than enough ex Etonian’s, with little lived experience of the lives of the majority of the population.

She is a woman who despite a poor start in life has succeeded in breaching that almost insurmountable barrier. She is to be applauded especially by other women.

I haven’t criticised her regional accent - (as I said clearly in my earlier post) it’s the spiteful, sneering way she speaks of others but then she probably knows no better.

I also compared her to Labour’s former Home Secretary Alan Johnson who worked hard to better himself so he could interact effectively with anyone from whatever walk of life. There are plenty of famous people, not just politicians, who have done the same without losing their regional accents.

I suspect she knows exactly what she means.

I don't believe class changes with money.

If that was fje case, presumably everyone would be happy for Rayner to be put in a higher class bracket than them.

Nah! She was born to be underclass - that's where she should stay! wink

Agree MissA. I think she’s a seriously wealthy woman these days! I’m also speculating if that’s part of the reason she doesn’t want to publish her financial status.
😮
Doesn’t fuss me in the slightest but might upset some voters who like to identify with working class roots.
I admire her for making the most of her opportunities in life. I think she’s feisty and brave really.
Mind you - that’s easy if the wings beneath your wings are union backed.

She’s Labours ‘attack dog’. Probably coached by Alistair Campbell.

I doubt it very much. I can't see that Blair's spin doctor and Rayner would have much in common. hmm

Labour just can't win, so it seems. There are those who accuse Labour of encouraging people not to have aspirations and putting the emphasis on support with benefits and statist "big brother". However, those who do have aspirations and reap the rewards from their hard work and aspirations are denigrated too. It's a tough one!

And he had a Welsh accent too! How on earth anybody so coarse could ever have become an MP is beyond me! shock

PS. Where's the sarcasm emoji? I'm not serious!

As are some of those made about Angela Rayner.

I have not read a thing on here about AR that is disgraceful. People have given their honest opinions but they are not disgraceful.

It is just an awful comment.

I am thinking back a few years to when Corbyn was on our screens and had his heart set on becoming PM and was coming out with things like “Labour are going to make kinder and more gentle politics”. He obviously didn’t send AR the memo.
