I agree with everything you say Whitewave.

He also says the changes will include tightening the criteria for PIP … which is already notoriously difficult to obtain and specifically targets the disabled. What a cruel, heartless policy!

Today’s announcement was specifically about tackling what Sunak called the ‘sick note culture’, ie those people who claim benefits. There are 1.44 million people unemployed in this category, not 11 million.

I don’t think this is just about the disabled/ wheelchair users, there are 11,000,000 now not working between 18-64.
My own pet theory is that a lot found it comfy working from home or not working at all during the pandemic.
No matter who’s in control at government level, this needs urgent attention.

Agree with both above posts. Also, will employers be willing to make appropriate adjustments in the workplace so that disabled people can take up a position. In many cases it’s not that those with a disability don’t want to work, it’s that places of employment are not suitable for employees who are, for example:
*wheelchair users
*sight impaired
*hearing impaired

It’s the causes of illness that should be tackled! I can’t see that the proposals will solve anything.
Fiddling while Rome Burns, comes to mind. Not that there are any more important matters to deal with!!!!
Roll on the GE.

So it seems that the Tories appear to accept that they have lost the argument over Rwanda , so now they retreating back to familiar ground of identifying and blaming scrounges.

This time they have tried to nuance it and blame those on the sick list.

We’ve been here before haven’t we? This nasty game of blaming others is played out once again.

I can think of myriad reasons why the list those off sick is growing - not least

The NHS waiting list

The covid affect

The drug shortage

The growing mental health issue

Austerity and the cost of living

The stress of trying to do 2 or three jobs to support your family

The stripping away of the support given by the likes of Sure Start, youth projects, counselling etc.
