The Republic of Ireland and their tensions with migrants.

France encourages them cross the channel, the UK encourages them to cross the Irish Sea or they will go to Rwanda, Ireland can’t repatriate to UK because their courts have said UK is not safe because they will be deported to Rwanda, so Ireland gets the the hump with France and they finally do something to stop the boats.

A solution in the making?

I do apologise! What an awful thing to do to anyone, I hadn’t read the story and I stand completely corrected!

Urmstongran Wed 01-May-24 12:13:13

And re the 41y.o. father of the 7 y.o. who died. Latest news:
“Iraqi father was trying to smuggle his family across the Channel because the Swedish Government ( which was where the family was living) wanted to return the family to Iraq because that country is now deemed to be safe.”

I’m disputing the fact that this asylum seeker paid to be taken over the border. It’s very easy to get across from Belfast to a Dublin. I’m not disputing than a, or many, asylum seekers ended up in Belfast.

I’m not “het up”, my BP is fine thanks, and I’m also not suggesting that migration, both legal and illegal, isn’t an issue. It most certainly is!

“Just reading this morning of someone who had got to Belfast, heard about Rwanda and paid somebody around 4000 euros to help him cross the border to go to Dublin!! Is this going to be the new scam? luluaugust”

😂😂😂😂😂😂 Omg funniest thing I’ve read for an age!

I’m married to a proud Irishman. We have family in Southern Ireland. Brexit screwed them over!

I’ve worked in both the North and South of Ireland, if you’ve never been and don’t know the geography (or the history of how the English screwed them over time and time again!) then please don’t just repost media or hearsay rot.

Actually you are wrong have a look on Channel 4 on YouTube a Morrocan asylum seeker said some had been scammed and had paid 1400 pounds to cross over to Ireland. I think you should apologise to luluaugust

I have to say that it sounds like a very plausible scam to me. Someone is exploiting asylum seekers' ignorance of the the nature of the 'border' between NI and ROI.

Urmstongran Wed 01-May-24 12:08:47

“Irish authorities begin clearing ‘shanty town’ of asylum seekers
About 200 migrants in Dublin will be moved to more sanitary accommodation as Taoiseach says tents will not be allowed to return”

Urmstongran Wed 01-May-24 12:05:01

Cossy you sound very het up. It can’t be doing your blood pressure any good.

She was 7y.o. Other prospective migrants stormed the already overloaded rubber boat according to her41 y.o. father who was interviewed on the BBC this morning.

Some of these people do not have the extortionate money to pay the human traffickers so they are trying to force their way onto the dinghies instead. More tragedies will be in the offing from the French coast this summer.

This whole situation is untenable. And dangerous. It needs to be stopped. Some horrible people are making an awful lot of money out of this misery. Do they care? Do the heck. It will be business as usual today.

I completely agree with your statements that this situation needs to be stopped, and it’s dangerous and traffickers are far more of an issue than the migrants and that many of the migrants are now desperate.

Apologies, I’ve just read a statement from the father of this girl, yes she was 7, not 4. As if her age makes any difference at all, she was a vulnerable child.

Spain has the same problem in the Canary Islands and Italy as well, in Sicily.

However, The President in Italy and the President of The E.U. had done to Libya & Tunisa to pay off the Presidents to control the Smugglers.

It is a very sad story, for those who are not criminals. Many are women with babies or pregnant and many are just seeking a better economic life as there are no opportunities in their native countries.

Italy was making a deal with Albania as a 3rd country to accept migrants.

It is a horror scene for all involved including the European countries.

The condemnation of the people smugglers goes without saying, Zakouma We don't need to condemn murderers, muggers, and thieves with every post either - that goes without saying.

Errr I for one, along with others, have constantly and consistently blamed the traffickers, along with our govt, for the “hoards” of people risking their lives in small inadequate rubber boats!

Never mind among the last dead was a four year old child!

But, Cossy, we ARE the mugs, the laughing stock, the Clown Fools of Europe. And if someone has deliberately "lost" all identity documentation then they are illegal - possibly/probably criminal too.

Sorry, but respectfully, as an ex Civil Servant who actually worked with many vulnerable groups, including asylum seekers, I utterly disagree.

Bigotry and ignorance are terrible things, however how fortunate are we in our country that we still have freedom of speech (and print), that we are able to critique our govt and the opposition, that we are able to “come out” as gay and follow whichever religion we choose and freely express our opinions however ill-informed.

Not the case in so many countries! Most of us live safely here purely as an accident of birth!

68% of all people seeking asylum wait longer than six months for a decision

Banned from working, vulnerable families struggle to survive on just £5.84 a day

Over half of people are granted refugee status on appeal

Just google 'why do immigrants prefer the UK than France' and you'll find the answer.
Home goal comes to mind.

Elegran Wed 01-May-24 10:33:16

Right, here are facts about refugees and asylum seekers, from
www.refugee-action.org.uk/about/facts-about-refugees/ Definitions first, and whether they must seek refuge in the first country they reach.

" What is a refugee?
According to the UN Refugee Convention, the definition of a refugee is someone who: ‘owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country’ (Article 1, 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees)."

"What is an asylum seeker?
The definition of an asylum seeker is someone who has arrived in a country and asked for asylum. Until they receive a decision as to whether or not they are a refugee, they are known as an asylum seeker. In the UK, this means they do not have the same rights as a refugee or a British citizen would. For example, people seeking asylum aren’t allowed to work.
The right to seek asylum is a legal right we all share. It isn’t illegal to seek asylum, because seeking asylum is a legal process. It also isn’t illegal to be refused asylum – it just means you haven’t been able to meet the very strict criteria to prove your need for protection as a refugee.

"Do people have to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach?
No. The 1951 Refugee Convention does not require a person to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. People trying to cross the Channel can legitimately claim asylum in the UK if they reach it."

Rubbish! There’s a regular bus service from Belfast to Dublin. It takes 1 hour 50 mins and costs €13.

LizzieDrip Wed 01-May-24 10:13:28

But, Cossy, we ARE the mugs, the laughing stock, the Clown Fools of Europe

mae13 ‘shouting’ in capital letters doesn’t make it true. However, if we are the ‘laughing stock of Europe’ it is only because of Brexit. We are the only country in the world to voluntarily impose economic sanctions upon ourself. I suppose that does deserve some derision from our European peers.

Sorry, Zakouma I was replying to Nicenanny but your name was at the front of my mind at the time.

Wyllow3 Wed 01-May-24 10:00:42

There has been plenty of condemnation of people smugglers on this and similar threads. In fact, it's probably the key thing we all agree on. It's definitely a European wide issue and cant be tackled just from our end. Unfortunately our ability to work with Europe has been reduced since Brexit

ukandeu.ac.uk/policing-capabilities-lessened-after-brexit/

Nevertheless, cross border policing is central.

LizzieDrip Wed 01-May-24 10:00:29
