A good win as well for Sadiq Khan. Well ahead of his rivals.
However more people voted against him than voted for him. I wonder if he'd have been returned if it hadn't gone to a straight first past the post this year instead of the SV system used before. Probably, but I preferred the supplementary vote system, more people get a candidate they're happy with, and it does open the door to independents rather than just the main parties.
More people voted against Boris Johnson than did for him. So what was the point of that observation?
The tories introduced FPTP in the hopes of preventing a third term for Khan. I cannot begin to imagine what was going through their minds when they chose Hall to run against him.
The point of the observation was that it was still a minority of voters that voted for Khan, more people didn't want him than did. Is that OK with you?
There have been many posts over the years decrying our first past the post system, pointing out that we always (except for rare exceptions) finish up being governed by a party that most people didn't want. It seemed strange to me that we went from a better system to a worse one. I wouldn't have wanted Susan Hall, and like you can't think why she was chosen, unless nobody else would be considered.
First past the post precludes people from voting for their possibly preferred independent candidate, save in the knowledge that if s/he fails to win, then their second choice comes into play. Remember that the first London mayor, Ken Livingstone was not chosen as the official Labour candidate, so resigned from the party, stood as an independent and won. With first pass the past that will be a vanishingly rare occurrence in the future.
