It appears that the polls which are showing massive results for labour are so far correct.

The by-election in Liverpool was won by Labour with a 26% swing. That is huge!

The local elections are showing the same sort of swing away from the Tories.

A wow indeed. Labour Party have to ask how he held the protest vote (mostly) when others didn't.

(The Independent candidate Nick Buckley - can't make him out at all (can you?)

More concerning is the low turnout for elections. Burnhams was 32% but some wards in my local mayor elections were 21%.

Another mayor who did incredibly well was Andy Burnham, he got 420,749 votes, almost two-thirds of those available, which was more than 350,000 more votes than the Conservatives' who came second with 68,946. Wow! 😮

My goodness that was tight. I thought it would be given the protest vote - Gaza. If Labour could have attracted back just half if those votes it would have increased it’s margin considerably.

It is certainly that they may have to look at.

Precisely.

Wow - seismic result in the West Midlands

I didn’t realise that Andy Street and Michael Fabricant are partners. They seem such an unlikely couple.?

I thought Street conducted himself well in his defeat speech, as did Parker in his acceptance speech.

Many people in favour of ULEZ. A lot of people want cleaner. Greener policies and to stop our roads getting clogged up with cars. I am happy Khan has won. I’m not sure how anyone can say he is “useless”- I wonder what one word label you would give to this current government?

Richard Parker (Labour)has won West Midlands

Anyone waiting on the WMidlands result?

The Mayor of London is in control of 30% of the Metropolitan Police’s budget, along with many decisions made concerning operations.

I hoped Khan would be out, as I find him useless in all things. And don’t even get me started on extended ULEZ, with the costs of repairing all the lights..

But, Hall wasn’t a feasible alternative either.🤷‍♀️

I agree with you, quite useless is how I'd describe him too. I'm glad I've moved away from London, but the alternative, well who is she?

I agree with you. I did not want Khan. I am totally against ULEZ.

We need electoral reform.

In a democracy no government or council should have absolute power to pass laws or spend public money without the support of the majority of electors.

Do we want to continue to be the only undemocratic country in Europe, apart from Putin's puppet, Belarus?

Given that Johnson shut loads of police stations and PCSOs and youth services have been cut to nothing, I’m not sure how people expect knife crime to easily be reduced. Other cities have a higher level of violent crime proportional to the population, but people seem to think Khan is to blame for crime in Birmingham, Nottingham etc. if anyone thinks Susan Hall had the answer they are delusional.

👏👏👏

A good win as well for Sadiq Khan. Well ahead of his rivals.

However more people voted against him than voted for him. I wonder if he'd have been returned if it hadn't gone to a straight first past the post this year instead of the SV system used before. Probably, but I preferred the supplementary vote system, more people get a candidate they're happy with, and it does open the door to independents rather than just the main parties.

More people voted against Boris Johnson than did for him. So what was the point of that observation?

The tories introduced FPTP in the hopes of preventing a third term for Khan. I cannot begin to imagine what was going through their minds when they chose Hall to run against him. hmm

The point of the observation was that it was still a minority of voters that voted for Khan, more people didn't want him than did. Is that OK with you?

There have been many posts over the years decrying our first past the post system, pointing out that we always (except for rare exceptions) finish up being governed by a party that most people didn't want. It seemed strange to me that we went from a better system to a worse one. I wouldn't have wanted Susan Hall, and like you can't think why she was chosen, unless nobody else would be considered.
First past the post precludes people from voting for their possibly preferred independent candidate, save in the knowledge that if s/he fails to win, then their second choice comes into play. Remember that the first London mayor, Ken Livingstone was not chosen as the official Labour candidate, so resigned from the party, stood as an independent and won. With first pass the past that will be a vanishingly rare occurrence in the future.

Ms Hall rolling her eyes as Sadiq was giving his speech. She then made one of the most graceless speeches that I can ever recall hearing. Extremely rude woman.

It was vile wasn’t it sad.

She certainly wasn't the best choice to stand. I don't like her either.
Her surname is Hall.

🙂

Sadiq Khan has been officially declared the winner in London.

No solution to knife crime any time soon then.

So, if you were Mayor of London, Sarnia, how would you cut down (no pun intended) on knife crime?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-May-24 17:10:19

The Tories have asked for a re-count for Midlands - Street.

Does this suggest a possible lose?
