Should Israel not compete in the European Song Contest?

I’ve seen tonight on the BBC news, that there are thousands of people marching and gathering in Malmo in Sweden, demanding that the Israeli entry to the song contest should not be allowed. The young girl who is representing Israel is only twenty years old, and she has been advised by the Israelis to stay in her hotel room all the time, except when she’s performing, for her own safety.
This disturbs me. Why is it acceptable to terrorise a young woman who is there merely to sing a song in a competition?

A form of hysteria, thousands marching over one young woman singing. Was it the same in Germany in the 30’s , blind
hatred being whipped up.

Never understood why Israel or Australia were in Eurovision when they clearly arent in Europe.I think Israel should have been banned this year along with Russia..sanitising their abhorrent actions ..killing innocent people by "singing a song in a competition" isn't the way forward. Its a disgrace they are allowed to take part.

Sad how anti-semitism is infecting the globe.

rafichagran Fri 10-May-24 01:07:09

I feel very sorry for the young woman in question.

Anniebach Fri 10-May-24 01:10:27

Yes antisemitism has a grip on the world

Oreo Fri 10-May-24 08:05:49

It’s always been there, hiding in plain sight. Now the war against hamas has given antisemites the green light to be openly so.

Oreo Fri 10-May-24 08:07:48

I hope she does well, but with voting always political with Eurovision if she sang like an angel with a great song, there would only be a few points in it for her.I would love to be proved wrong.

Yes anti semantitism is alive and well and growing , if not, how is it that nobody appears to even remotely concerned, let alone march, for the children and people of Yemen, who are suffering unrelenting bombing, and blockading by Saudi Arabia? They too are starving, homeless, riddled with ailments and deprevation Where are all.you fervent marchers for them? Also Sudan, Somalia, Ukraine, (in particular), Chinese Muslims, Rohinga Muslims, women in Iran, and countless other persecuted people. But only Israel (very selective) which, unfortunately and sadly, and honestly is because they are Jews. Of course this young woman should be allowed to perform, If she were to win (she wont, for obvious reasons) there would be riots, again because she is a Jew.

Gillycats Fri 10-May-24 08:18:46

Exactly that Jaberwok.

Couldn't agree more. I have no religions leanings and this world is a very sorry place.

westendgirl Fri 10-May-24 08:26:06

Well said, Jabberwok. I have mentioned the same point about the students'rioting. They were very quiet over Syria, over the Sudan, over the groups you mentioned and there did not seem a lot of support for the young women killed by the so called
morality police. Indeed and sadly it must be anti-semitism.

Exactly. Always some on GN pick and choose which wars suit their agenda. Israel bashing and anti semetism is the new norm.

Katie590 Fri 10-May-24 08:46:54

In the circumstance it would have been best if the withdrew because the controversy is overshadowing the music (if you can call it that)

GrannyGravy13 Fri 10-May-24 08:54:49

Israel’s entry is currently number two with the bookies.

Anti-semitism is now out and proud no need for the antisemitic folks to hide anymore.

I think Jaberwok has made many valid points in her post of 08.12.04 this morning.

Jaberwok Fri 10-May-24 09:05:08

But why should she? Anymore than individual Russians should be banned from Wimbledon, or anything else come to that. No one can help how or where they were born or the shape of their government. This young woman isn't responsible for Israeli policy on Gaza, so why punish her for it? Again from these fervent marchers, no mention of the hostages! Well I guess they approve of kidnapping, rape.and murder (of Jews)?! Well it seems that way. I think the thing that has shocked me, and actually made me feel physically sick was the sight of protesters at the gates of Auschwitz. Have these people really got no idea what went on inside that dreadful place? or do they actually approve and are Nazi sympathisers? If nothing else convinces me of anti sematism, this most certainly did.

Galaxy Fri 10-May-24 09:07:35

They have been provided with an excuse for their anti semitism, they get to be racist and get the thrill of thinking they are the good guys.

Anniebach Fri 10-May-24 09:25:58

The opt out of being seen as antisemitic is to criticise Zionists

Cossy Fri 10-May-24 09:27:20

I completely agree with all you’ve said, particularly about war, killing and starvation across the world! I wish for an end to it all, everywhere.

I always thought entertainment and sport shouldn’t be politicalised.

Sadly since Brexit, for some reason, we’ve seen a rise in the few far right and we’ve seen swastikas daubed along our street front which is utterly horrifying.

Where I live we have a community of Orthodox Jews, they go about their business quietly and calmly harming no one. We also have Muslims doing the same.

It’s a sad world in which we are living, we seem to be going backwards.

Jaberwok Fri 10-May-24 09:27:48

I think you're right Galaxy. So many horrors in the world, but only this one is seemingly important, and more and more displaying its true colours. Anti Semetism and this irrational hatred of Jews. This is now called.Anti Zionism, which give it a cloak of respectability, but is actually the same thing.

It's appalling, Jaberwok
I agree with everything you say.

Aveline Fri 10-May-24 09:29:30

Is Israel in Europe? No. Therefore it shouldn't be in this competition.

Anniebach Fri 10-May-24 09:33:19

Was it in the contest previously?
