I like it.

I think the red symbolises the power Charles has, for bad, if he chooses to use it that way.
Then his nice face reassures you that he wouldn't.

I feel like sister whatever her name was, now.
The nun/art critic. wink

Sister Wendy! I loved her programmes.

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 22:57:32

Me too.
Childishly, I enjoyed her take on some of the quite graphic art.

I loved her enthusiasm.

Is she still around?

MissAdventure Wed 15-May-24 23:02:57

No, she isn't.
She died in 2018, so wiki tells me.

I think this is great. Hadn't seen it before - will now look up Jonathan Yeo!

NotSpaghetti Thu 16-May-24 01:49:26

Oooh.

The more I look at it the more I don't like it

It looks like someone did a wonderful portrait and then their 3 year old got at it with a tin of red paint

My money’s on Prince Louis…

Glorianny Thu 16-May-24 07:46:58

I think the red is to make it less like this photo.

Mollygo Thu 16-May-24 07:51:27

I think the red is overdone, but the portrait is very good.

ronib Thu 16-May-24 07:57:41

Well Pantglas2 perhaps Prince Louis is Yeo’s studio assistant because there are quite a few paintings in this particular style. Captain Tom’s portrait is one. So it’s not original and has been done before by the artist.
Yeo’s portrait of Prince Philip is conventional. Tony Blair is interesting. I think there’s something a bit formulaic about Yeo’s treatment of King Charles even if very well executed.

Iam64 Thu 16-May-24 08:26:10

It’s a glorious painting and a true image of the King. It shows his personality, I feel, there’s a gentle kindness in there along with the strength needed for his role.
I was rather shocked by the red initially. It seemed to reflect the troubled times the King is living through. Overall I do admire and like it.

There is a very very damning review of the painting in the Guardian today - couldn't be worse!

Mollygo Thu 16-May-24 09:32:42

If the Guardian is damning it then it must be good!

I just looked at some of his other portraits on the link NotSpaghetti gave, and they are really beautiful.

There is one of Camilla, and one of the Duke of Edinburgh amongst them.

I’ve just looked as well. He has a unique way of capturing heart and soul through expressions.

MissAdventure Thu 16-May-24 11:11:03

Yes.
All the paintings somehow showcase the face.
It's quite fascinating how he does it.

Foxyferret Thu 16-May-24 11:16:34

Not too keen but hey ho, it’s certainly different.

Elusivebutterfly Thu 16-May-24 11:24:07

The red background is far too strong. When I saw the portrait on TV I just saw a head and lots of red. Online I can see the hands slightly with the uniform very faintly there. I read that there is a butterfly but did not see it.
It would be good with a much more muted background but really do not like it as it is.

JRTW2 Thu 16-May-24 11:24:12

I like the face but not the rest. It looks like he’s in the fires of Hell!

Glorianny Thu 16-May-24 11:25:43

I think most of his other portraits are more successful. The red background in the one of Captain Tom gives an impression of time, memory and clouds. In this one of the King it just looks confusing. Unless of course he is showing the king as confused and overwhelmed.

SueDonim Thu 16-May-24 11:25:45

Thank you for the link, Notspaghetti. It shows that KC’s portrait is very much in the artist’s style, which to me is that he portrays a face standing out from within a notable background.

I know nothing about art but I’ve thought about the portrait quite a lot since first seeing it, which I almost never do! It’s certainly made an impression on me and seems to depict the essence of the king, in as much as any of us know him. The background speaks to me of the turbulent times we live in and the uncertainly so many of us feel.

NotSpaghetti Thu 16-May-24 11:28:50

I also see his mother in it SueDonim

They are all absolutely fabulous, he is an incredible artist, thank you for the link.

I am amazed that people say they cannot see the uniform and the butterfly. That is not due to red colour as to me it is all very clear. Everyone sees differently I know, I have had so many conversations about this subject of how we see things. So very interesting.
