No surprise there.

It has been obvious for months

Curlywhirly Mon 20-May-24 12:18:26

Good.

I agree At this point anyone who thinks otherwise needs to look again

I doubt that they will get him to trial, but it is sending out a clear message to the entire world about the conduct of the Israeli army.

Many will ask why not Hamas - well you should know the answer - they are not a standing army representing a sovereign state.

The OP was as a result of a BBC drop down on my I-pad - but I can’t find any more information. Has anyone got anything and where I can find it please?

According to CNN (only one I could find running this story) arrest warrants are to be issued for Sinwar (Hamas leader) and Benjamin Netanyahu.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 20-May-24 12:40:55

Got it!

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has applied for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas's leader in Gaza for war crimes.

Karim Khan said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both men bore criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity from at least 7 October 2023.

The ICC, based in The Hague, has been investigating Israel's actions in the occupied territories for the past three years - and more recently the actions of Hamas as well”

More information will be available soon.

This gives me hope

Whitewavemark2 Mon 20-May-24 12:45:41

Is this separate from the genocide accusation? It sounds like it?

Smileless2012 Mon 20-May-24 12:47:10

Issuing the warrants is one thing, enforcing them is another.

I personally reckon they have more chance of enforcing Netanyahu’s than any Hamas leaders who are well and truly protected in the UAE or indeed by now in Iran.

I read about this in the Guardian. The ICJ also believes Yahar Sinwar (Head of Hamas), Mohammed Diab Ibrahim Al-Masri (Commander in Chief of Hamas) and Ismail Haniyeh ((Head of Hanas Political Bureau) to bear responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

South Africa filed in December but only against Israel.

Needs to be both.

You may be right GrannyGravy.

I am pleased that Hamas has been indicted as well. I had thought it has come entirely from SA - which had only accused Netanyahu - but clearly the ICC or someone thought better.

The process takes at least 2 years in reality but its a way of "Calling people out" and naming/investigating.

Although it is unlikely that either of them, or their supporters are going to agree to the charges, it is a step forward and one which may help to stop other countries supplying arms. Including UK

Yes - it is a clear message to the world.

Humanity cannot tolerate this behaviour.

It didn’t worry Putin.
BN may be angry with this but the hamas leaders won’t give two hoots.

Wyllow3 Mon 20-May-24 14:30:22

Its worth calling it out for the knowledge of what has been alleged worldwide, its true the perps may take no notice..

About time too

Taken from the report on the BBC website:
"My office submits that the evidence we have collected, including interviews with survivors and eyewitnesses, authenticated video, photo and audio material, satellite imagery and statements from the alleged perpetrator group, shows that Israel has intentionally and systematically deprived the civilian population in all parts of Gaza of objects indispensable to human survival"
"This occurred through the imposition of a total siege over Gaza that involved completely closing the three border crossing points, Rafah, Kerem Shalom and Erez, from 8 October 2023 for extended periods and then by arbitrarily restricting the transfer of essential supplies – including food and medicine – through the border crossings after they were reopened. The siege also included cutting off cross-border water pipelines from Israel to Gaza – Gazans’ principal source of clean water – for a prolonged period beginning 9 October 2023, and cutting off and hindering electricity supplies from at least 8 October 2023 until today"
"Israel, like all states, has a right to take action to defend its population. That right, however, does not absolve Israel or any state of its obligation to comply with international humanitarian law. Notwithstanding any military goals they may have, the means Israel chose to achieve them in Gaza – namely, intentionally causing death, starvation, great suffering, and serious injury to body or health of the civilian population – are criminal"

TBH I thought it was inevitable, the evidence has been stacking up. It will strengthen the resolve of Pro Palestine protestors in all parts of the world but I think it's important to remember that KK is seeking the arrest of those he thinks have committed crimes of humanity it is not an attack on the Israeli population or on Jewish people worldwide.

Glorianny Mon 20-May-24 15:35:13

Let's hope it causes the UK to stop supplying arms to Israel.
It is good to see the people of Gaza being given proper protection at last.
