Paula Vennells has arrived at the inquiry to answer to her part in the Post Office Scandal. The Mirror says how much her life has changed without her highly lucrative job and losing the opportunity to become Bishop of London. I care not one jot for how her life has changed because it won't have changed as much as the poor postmasters and mistresses.

The government over the years have sold us to markets starting with Thatchers ideals. She is their scapegoat and they will do their best to keep the victims waiting. Remember they are all lawyers at heart.

This is interesting:

This is why the postmasters want to see others questioned as this could go higher than Vennells.
If she is not suitable for the job who appointed her?
Is she a scapegoat or a lying, scheming woman?

Perhaps that’s why she was put in that post.

Exactly what we’ve all been saying. If you don’t ask questions you don’t get told what you need to know. You can’t rely on your underlings telling you everything you need to know, understanding what it is you need to know, or knowing what you already do and don’t know - iyswim. The most charitable thing I can say is that she seems to lack an enquiring mind, most unfortunate for someone in her position.

Yes here

You can watch all the sessions right back to when it started in 2022. The more interesting’ ones have also been on BBC News channel and Sky News

And how could such a high number of postmasters of previous good reputation suddenly be “guilty” of false accounting once Horizon was installed?

When they reported their problems and raised their concerns, they were all lied to, told no-one else had reported any issues and it must be them doing things wrong.

Corporate brainwashing.

What has always puzzled me, is that when people defraud someone, they hide the money away somewhere, transfer it to bank accounts, hide the cash under the floorboards.

In none of these cases could anyone ever show whre the money went. There wer no changes in the household spending patterns, no signs of transfers of lage sums of money elsewhere. These people weren't financial whizz kids, they were ordinary shopkeepers and Post masters.

Did it never occur to anyone that all this money suddenly disappearing without trace from so many people's acconts was rather odd and needed investigating?

No, and that's a question we have asked.

However, Vennells did manage to turn the fortunes of her beloved Post Office around.
During her time , it wen from a loss of £120 million to a profit of £35 million.

I know too that sub-postmasters suffered deeply and terribly and it happened under her leadership . I share with others the hope that those who were so badly treated get compensated and get that compensation soon.

As far as I can tell she really did all or many of the things people are now saying she did. I nonetheless think her tears are genuine - guilty she may be of many things, but she can still suffer and I do not think she could create tears to order.

This “I can’t recall”, “I don’t remember”, “I relied on my lawyers” etc etc! Rubbish! PV was paid a very, very handsome salary plus bonuses and it was her JOB to know what she professes not now to know/remember. Did she have no compassion for the postmasters? THE BUCK STOPS HERE, as they say, regarding who carries the can. Was PV having the wool pulled over her eyes during her years at the PO? The hearing makes very uncomfortable viewing, but she more than deserves this grilling. To think what her poor “victims” have gone through, including 4 suicides, false imprisonments, livelihoods lost etc. and to think also that she was a woman of the church. It makes my blood run cold. I hope that she’s imprisoned herself - even that is too good for her. I don’t know how she lives with herself, but I do think that others in the PO were also guilty. And how could such a high number of postmasters of previous good reputation suddenly be “guilty” of false accounting once Horizon was installed? It doesn’t add up - excuse the pun.

If only life was so black and white and consisted only of goodies and baddies. Unfortunately it isn't. The complex network of truths, half truths, lies and sheer incompetence may never be fully outlined.
I just hope that the postmasters get the compensation they richly deserve asap.

I think this very possible.

Although the buck does stop at PV I want all key players to be held responsible.

Yes, she's not the only one.
As for Fujitsu - are they being called back?

I think I heard someone say yesterday, after listening to Vennells, that she was guilty of corporate amnesia.
She certainly has an extraordinarily bad memory.

It seems to me that the people of this country are constantly having to put up with being lied to and taken for fools. The Post Office scandal, the NHS and its continuing coverups including the dreadful tainted blood horror, the Rochdale and similar cases, the Metropolitan police failures, Covid etc. And remember the ‘weapons of mass destruction’ fiasco? Too many to count. And the grossly and criminally negligent slide out from under it all with ease with their gold plated pensions and peerages, honours intact while we lesser mortals struggle on within the law and pay for it all! I don’t know what it will take to get accountability and change. Civil disobedience? A revolution? I despair!

Paula Vernell crying - come on - she has let the sisterhood down, can you imagine a male CEO crying in public??? If you want to play with the big boys ---

This is bad southwestgran.

WoodLane7 Sat 25-May-24 13:50:18

I believe that police have been monitoring the enquiry as part of a criminal investigation so with any luck things should get even worse still for Paula Vennells..................

undines Sat 25-May-24 13:27:33

Ah, southwestgran, yes......

undines Sat 25-May-24 13:26:33

She is not the first 'lying, manipulative hypocrite' to speak from the pulpit. It seems clear she deserves a custodial sentence, she should perhaps be 'had up' for manslaughter, as people died as a result of her behaviour. I do, however, wonder if she's been thrown under the bus by other forces acting behind the scenes. I have absolutely no justification for saying this as I have not looked into the mechanics of it all. It just seems so stupid of her.

southwestgran Sat 25-May-24 13:24:20

If you think this is bad wait till you find out about the covid fraud!

grannybuy Sat 25-May-24 13:12:21

It is so true that incompetent people do get very responsible jobs. As a teacher, I saw many incompetent head teachers. I’m forever ranting on about how local councils should consist of lawyers, doctors, teachers, finance professionals, and perhaps an architect and builder etc, instead of people who feel that they’d ‘ like to be a councillor ‘. We certainly don’t have many
experienced people in my local council - and it shows!

albertina Sat 25-May-24 13:05:42

She should get a good long stretch in prison, like the poor folk who were unjustly jailed and had their whole lives turned upside down.

3nanny6 Sat 25-May-24 13:03:44

Those poor people who were accused of stealing it is terrible, some of them even committing suicide, top bosses in the Post Office must be accountable for their actions and should pay for what they put people through. Look at all this stuff coming out now I listened to a program about the blood transfusions a few days ago another case of complete incompetence.
