So Sunak’s called an election - was he pushed or did he jump? With a sigh of relief that this has finally arrived, the thought of six weeks of absolute rubbish/character assasination in the press is depressing. How would you like to see the press handle the next six weeks?

I like Rishi Sunak. I think he is genuine and has inherited a bad track record from the Conservatives. In the short time he has been chancellor and Prime Minister I think he has done a good job.
As another poster said, he doesn't need to do this job. I think he is ambitious and this is driving him. He didn't come from a wealthy background. His background was not dissimilar to Maggie Thatcher's - correct me if I am wrong.
I find Keir Starmer very unappealing. He changes his policies at the drop of a hat. He is also wealthy. He looked like a rabbit in the headlights when he was on TV last night.
All parties need to stop their infighting and dedicate themselves to the job.
Which particular policies has Starmer changed “at the drop of a hat”.
He is wealthy now, but he attended state school and had a very normal upbringing and background. Luke many others he became wealthy through ability and hard work, not to be belittled.
I very much doubt Sunak’s roots are anything akin to Thatchers. She attended state schools, Sunak is public school educated.
All parties should receive the same amount of air time. That gives everyone a chance to hear about the policies of minor parties as they do of major. it might lead to some people moving their vote, perhaps one of the minor parties may take off as a result.
George Galloway would be pleased MOnica
Exactly - and in a democracy that is how it should be.
Racism in a democracy
I loathe Galloway with every breath in my body, I still think he should get media time.
With freedom of speech ? singing From The River To The Sea.
My commitment to freedom is speech is generally high, even for those I loathe and disagree with. Galloay is an antisemitic misogynist. If we mess about with freedom of speech then I cant say that.
Galloway is an antisemitic misogynist
Yes he is. He is vile.

Starmer background
"He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme in 2019: “My dad worked in a factory, he was a toolmaker, and my mum was a nurse, and she contracted a very rare disease early in her life that meant she was constantly in need of NHS care.”
Net worth 7.7 million
Sunak background
" His father is a general practitioner in the National Health Service. His mother was a pharmacist and owned the Sunak Pharmacy in Southampton between 1995 and 2014."
Net worth: 651 million
How much of Sunak’s wealth is actually his wife’s wealth?
Best I could find, mostly her money but his own
"Sunak became a “multimillionaire in his mid-twenties”, according to The Sunday Times. He was a partner at the hedge fund TCI, where bosses “shared nearly £100m after an audacious stock market bet that lit the touchpaper on the 2008 financial crisis”."

People should be free to sing or say, 'from the river to the sea' but not in a manner aimed to intimidate.
It is the actions of the groups using the phrase in trying to stop people who differ from them going about their normal business and using demonstrations and camp-ins to force others, incuding corporate bodies like universities to act in a discriminatory way that is an offence against free speech.
Reform is the only party that have any common sense and that would get our country back on track and I am all for them. That's my view.
From the river to the sea is genocide as far as I’m concerned. Up there with the terrible Nazi slogans. Disgusting.

I agree.
But not quite sure why it’s in a thread about the press and next election.

From the river to the sea is direct support of Hamas and is only going to result in bloodshed that will make the current Gaza war look like a picnic in the park.

As you say, that is your view. my view would be the exact opposite.

His wealth is always going to dog him in politics however well intentioned he is, why bother, but I guess if you have everything money can buy you need a challenge

Which Reform policies do you believe will transform the UK? They want to more or less privatise the NHS and scrap Zero emissions policy. They are nostalgic "little englanders" with little or no experience or track record in politics.

Well as Starmer is a also millionaire, guess we can say the same about him. Wonder how he made his millions? Obviously being a Human Rights lawyer paid dividends, land worth 10 million, house worth 1 million. Book sales lucrative,So let's not be hypocrites, he's not your average Jo, as much as they like to play it that way.
Kier Starmer’s net worth is reportedly 7.7 million, this does not include the land he owns which is worth 10 million at todays prices nor revenue from book sales etc.,
Starmer is definitely not your average man at all. He had about as much idea about how ordinary people live as does Sunak.

I think it would be fair to say we are talking about a very different scale of wealth for Sunak though. He’s on the Rich List, and he and his wife are wealthier than the king!
I can’t imagine anybody would rise to be PM without considerable personal wealth related to professional success, except perhaps Boris Johnson, who was lucky enough to have a mate to lend him £800k when he needed it.
I think JohnMajor and Theresa May would count as poor relations who rose to highest office since I started voting in 1974.
Although she was a shopkeeper’s daughter Thatcher married a very rich man which helped her ascendancy no doubt.
