I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

Galaxy Thu 23-May-24 18:40:29

Do that should say.

Also I forgot the awful sneering Emily Thornberry who looked down her nose at the hard working white van man and the English Flag no thanks.

hard working white van man? really?

What a choice

Reminds of that song " clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right. Here I am stuck in the middle" Just about sums it up.

Tax is at the current level because of the money spent helping people during covid and the energy price and cost of living increases due to the war in Ukraine vegansrock. Things Labour hasn’t had to deal with, just sit on the sidelines sniping. Now what will they do if saddled with compensation to postmasters and victims of contaminated blood? That hasn’t been priced in as yet (and I trust they would continue funding equipment for the Ukraine).

Well they will be saddled with it won’t they, as we know this govt has dragged it’s feet paying nothing to anyone! Add in the appalling cladding issue, and Grenfell and the crumbling cement issues! None of these were caused by this govt, that much is true, but they’ve also not resolved and paid yet!

Our local boundaries have changed to remove a labour voting area.
We had a Lib Dem MP who retired and was replaced by a Tory. He is quitting and they've bussed in an out of town celebrity candidate.
I'm also an "anything but Tory" voter. I'm going to read and watch as much as I can and try to make an informed local decision.

I'd love it if we had an alternative to the 2 main parties.

Some years ago, there was a suggestion that a second election might happen very quickly after a first. A woman in a local High Street, informed of this on the TV news, wailed 'OH NO! I can't stand it - not again'. That's exactly how I feel right now - for the first time in my adult life I have no idea who to vote for, and don't want to listen to a succession of waffling, lying politicians. I truly cannot bear it. My head is going in the sand very quickly.

So, following your argument; if the eye watering costs of compensation for the victims of the blood scandal and the post office are uncosted by Labour and a potential cause of tax rises.....where was Sunak planning on finding the money? By slashing retirement pensions to keep income tax down?

Casdon Thu 23-May-24 18:01:30

What a bizarre post Germanshepherdsmum. How can a party make tax decisions when they are in opposition, and what is their role other than to give their opinion of what the government is doing? Are you also suggesting that the compensation requirements wouldn’t be met if the Tories remain in power? Or that Labour shouldn’t or wouldn’t continue with the commitments given to Ukraine which they signed up to in parliament?

harold Thu 23-May-24 17:59:54

Labour as usual, though I have occasionally voted Lib Dem locally. Cannot understand people who don't vote after the struggles in the past. The conservatives do not really deserve to win and would probably benefit from some time spent in Opposition.

My vote will be on trying to fix our crumbling services.

I don’t believe Starmer and the gender saga- I think he’s just tried to tread a middle ground.

But, I think a lot of things need reform, and not just endless money thrown at them.

Smileless2012 Thu 23-May-24 17:42:49

It is possible to be concerned about more than one or two issues vegansrock.

vegansrock Thu 23-May-24 17:40:21

Why people are more concerned with gender ideology and a few p more tax when under the Tories tax is at the highest since WW2. Why water quality and the environment aren’t seen as more important beats me.

CLAW Thu 23-May-24 17:39:15

No, I feel exactly the same. At a total loss. I agree with you about immigration as some coming into our shores have been refused asylum in other countries such as Germany and Sweden. I don't know the reasons refused but it makes me uncomfortable. Happy for controlled immigration and for people who really want to live and work here. But, is it true that Labour will be offering asylum to Palestinians or is this just propaganda?

Smileless2012 Thu 23-May-24 17:36:23

Rishi Sunak's Government blocked the legislation passed by the Scottish Parliament for self identification for those wanting to change gender DL.

Despite this common sense, I'm not aware that he is prioritising the issue of gender identity whitewavemark.

My local MP is that fantastically brilliant ex chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. He doesn’t live in the borough unsurprisingly. The trouble with my area is that you could put a blue rosette on a dustbin and they’d vote for it. It’s so frustrating to live in an area that you know your vote won’t make a difference.

Same here. Regrettably, many if them seem to be happy with the decline in public services (and in the morals of the Tory party), just as long as they don't have to pay anymore tax. The "I'm alright, Jack" party would be more appropriate here. Because of this ultra safe seat, other parties don't field inspiring candidates, just a name on the voting slip. Luckily, this also applies to the more bonkers and niche parties such as Reform and their rehashed unicorns for all/Brexit promises.

Bit like my constituency!

Just 1p or 2p more tax Cossy? You’ll be lucky!

Per £? We shall see. Whilst working under this govt, as a Civil Servant, year on year I was worse off financially, pay freezes for years and years, increased cost of our pensions and all the other stuff culminating with freezing the personal allowance, how much worse can it be under Labour?

Same in my area, although the incumbent Tory MP was pretty good. But, he’s retiring.

The only chance here is to vote LD, on a tactical basis. Labour will never be elected.

MissAdventure Thu 23-May-24 17:22:36

He's a Corker, that one.
