I can’t bear Emily Thornberry. I agree with maddy’s summing up.

I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

Vote for the best candidate to get the tories out, if in doubt vote labour

^My snide comment reflects the fact that I don't rate Emily Thornberry particularly highly.^
White van man and flags aside, Lady Nugee, to give her her correct title, comes across as such an unbearably patronising woman.
Perhaps her sneer and manner are just unfortunate.
Exactly.
I wouldn’t give her the benefit of the doubt with regard to her sneer and manner.
I think she’s an unbearable snob, who despises the people she’s wishing to represent. That is, the working class.
I think the initial row, with Thornberry, started with the fact that it was during a major football tournament, and there were arguments raging about the flag of England everywhere.
She then made a comment about “white van man”.🙄

The working class often dont behave or think in the way some in the labour party would like them to think. It's a fairly well known issue. Alan Johnson was fairly witty about it when talking to Jon Lansman on the night of Corbyns defeat. Its frequently a problem for the Labour party, hence the disbelief at the Brexit vote, the disbelief at Johnsons appeal. My snide comment reflects the fact that I dont rate Emily Thornberry particularly highly.
Galaxy
No it referred to the working class. Or what Emily Thornberry thinks are the working class. Bless her.
Jeez!
If she'd posted a picture of a treelined road with BMWs and Audis parked on the drives, just for the context of the neighbourhood, would she have been accused of sneering at the middle classes?
And why the snidey comment 'Or what Emily Thornberry thinks are the working class.' ?
I'm afraid that I never did understand the furore over that photo, I think it was all entirely synthetic indignation and outrage.
I too am subject to a boundary change which should have meant my useless MP in his safe seat could face a challenge. Looking at the latest forecast, he's likely to get re-elected by the new constituency. Oh well at least he'll be seen on the High Street a few times between now and the election, rather than his usual invisibility.
fancythat
I wrote further back that as it happens, I quite like our MP.
But now starting to look into things further as an election approaches, he isnt our MP!
We have had recent boundary changes. Not sure if we were in a different one previously, or whether I have had it wrong all along!
Makes things even more confusing about voting, as not as keen on the MP I supposedly had.
I too am in an area that has had boundary changes. The MP isn’t in the party I would choose to elect, but he’s a good, fair MP who does a lot of work on behalf of the community and makes his voice heard in Westminster. I will be voting for him.

Spot on MissA! 🤣🤣

Strange that Starmer appeals to ‘ordinary people’. His school became fee-paying whilst he was there. After a first degree he studied for a second degree and was called to the Bar - not a route for a poor person by any means but he would have us all believe that’s what he was.
And his second degree was gained at……..wait for it…..Oxford!
That bastion of hatred for so many people!
they are still bloody awful drivers
Haha, how could I possibly disagree?
No it referred to the working class. Or what Emily Thornberry thinks are the working class. Bless her.
How could anybody be so dim as to assume " white" referred to the ethnicity of the van driver?
Ah well. There you have it.

08:54MaizieD to this stereotype, the "white van man" is typically an independent tradesperson, such as a builder, plumber or locksmith, self-employed, or running a small enterprise,[2] for whom driving a commercial vehicle is not their main line of business, as it would be for a professional freight-driver.[3] The "white" refers to the archetypal and most common colour of the van, not the driver himself.
I'm a grandmother, too. I don't need any instructions on how to suck eggs.
I am very well aware of how the phrase is used politically.

Also I forgot the awful sneering Emily Thornberry who looked down her nose at the hard working white van man and the English Flag no thanks.
hard working white van man? really?
*yes hard working white van man, traders such as plumbers, electricians mostly use white vans, hence English people call then white van man, sigh*
Hilarious! Some of those hard working van men are a law unto themselves. Do they turn up and keep their word?
Do some of them rip people off because they can?
Oh boo hoo, hard working white van man.
Regarding " snide" remarks about Reform, I've asked what are their policies? Still waiting a coherent answer.

She did indeed MayBee70 but nicenanny3 isn’t remotely interested in anything positive related to the Labour party
True, like you are not remotely interested in anything positive about Reform. Pot kettle comes to mind.
BevSec
How I agree with Nicenanny3, she is spot on! I will vote for Reform, Nigel Farage really cares about this country. The last thing we need is to be dragged back into the hated EU.
Thank you BevSec yes vote Reform take no notice of the snide remarks from the echo crowd on here 👍

I always thought that the universal derogatory use of the term 'white van man' arose from the fact that they seem to be the most appalling drivers on UK roads... 🤔
Exactly MayBee70
I, too, worry about the erosion of women’s rights. But I don’t think it’s the biggest problem facing the country at this moment in time. I’m far more concerned about the state of the NHS and other issues.

I don’t think any MP fights for women as much as Jess Phillips.
