I would not vote Conservative, but I don't trust Labour not to open the floodgates to yet more people who really don't like us and want to do us harm. Who to vote for - any ideas?

I'm interested to see posters saying things like 'I would never vote for so-and-so', following that statement with a link presumably to prove their point, inviting others to research. But statements using 'never' are based on emotion (because we cannot be sure what any party will be like in the future). If we are honest, most of us are going to make an emotional decision, because we cannot know the facts and can't believe anything anyone says in a manifesto. It's always possible to pick out one or two good things a government did, for instance during Covid, when most first world governments performed similarly. I have an emotional reaction to the Tories - I do not like people who are blatant, entitled liars, and, from their record, have presided over a time when conditions have become worse and worse for the most vulnerable in our society. Therefore I cannot possibly vote for them, and all that's left, effectively, is Labour. However, I am deeply uneasy about Keir Starmer. He seems to have a globalist agenda which could have some very unpleasant consequences for our civil liberties. These are very bad times and I fear for my children and grandchildren.

Grantanow

The Evening Standard reports that 'Thousands of Armed Forces members and their families are living in housing plagued by heating problems, electrical faults, and mould, new figures and images reveal.' Presumably Sunak wants the 18 year old national service compulsory recruits to live in the same shoddy accommodation.

Probably wants them to clean them up. Well, they did say they’d have uniforms. Decontamination suits? Sunak said today he’d been giving the idea a lot of thought for a long time and I’m thinking 2/3 days hmm?

If you do not want the Tories back in government, do you know about Compass? It is group aimed at more compassionate politics, focussed on progressive and effective change, and working together in a civilised manner.
Here is a link to Compass in case you want to know more.

Angela Raynor being interviewed by the police? Reminds me of someone else...um...who was he?... Fellow with the thatch on his head...

I intend to vote for the party which I think will do more for ‘ordinary’ people who just want to have enough money to bring up their families comfortably, have somewhere decent to live and want their local area to be fairly financed. I wonder which party that is?

Mama2023 Mon 27-May-24 18:36:15

Labour all the way - like the leader - feel he is in politics for right reasons- think Wes Streeting excellent for Health and understand they are not going to be able to do as much as wanted due to finances going to be left with. They need to get elected to do anything so they have to be careful not to alienate voters but not over promise So hard but I trust them more definitely .

Since the DM have set up a paywall for a lot of their articles, I haven’t bothered.,

Then again, I’ve never decided a vote on the back of newspaper opinions anyway.

MissAdventure Mon 27-May-24 17:21:24

Its only ok to read the mail if you're forced to, or find a discarded one, and have no other reading matter, on gransnet.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 27-May-24 17:00:52

Neither do I, but it’s the standard insult here.

Marg75 Mon 27-May-24 16:58:17

I don't read the Daily Mail!

silverlining48 Mon 27-May-24 16:51:26

More of the same marg. 😅

I don’t quite understand why so many women here are saying I can’t trust Starmer and I’m scared about the mess Labour will make of the country. Or I don’t like Sunak and the Tories but have always voted for them. Of course a good healthy debate is what is what is needed and argue the case for your choice, but for God’s sake read beyond the Daily Mail headlines and bring on some well thought out reasons for your vote.
This thread is quite alarming!

Marg75 Mon 27-May-24 16:41:27

Conservative for me, it's a no brainer. Don't trust Starmer and can't see Rayner in any kind of leadership in this great country of ours.

Arto1s Mon 27-May-24 16:36:51

It is a sad state of affairs when the choices are so untrustworthy and unpredictable. We have exactly the same situation here in the States. I would feel equally irresponsible voting for either of them, or not voting at all. What to do? Dire indeed.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 27-May-24 16:32:58

People are obsessed with taxation - I wonder how much you pay, and paid when working, Lizzie? Will your estate attract inheritance tax when you die?

Devorgilla Mon 27-May-24 16:31:50

I'm with you Lizzie44 on the above and will be voting Labour.

Iam64 Mon 27-May-24 16:31:11

Catching up - on dogs and alcohol indicating your political home, I have a lab and a spaniel, if I could I’d only drink champagne and do so whenever the opportunity arrives. These things point to me voting Conservative.

Nope, I’m Labour. Despite loathing Corbyn, I’m voted Labour because we had an excellent Labour mp. He lost to a conservative by 400 votes so we are hopeful now.

Starmer isn’t weak. He has integrity. I like Streeting and Raynor. Andy Burnham stood twice for the leadership and when he wasn’t the chosen one moved to be our Mayor. He’s an excellent Mayor and insists he wants to keep the job.

Honestly - how anyone can vote Tory after the last 14 years - mystery to me

Lizzie44 Mon 27-May-24 16:27:15

The first time I voted was in October 1964 when Harold Wilson narrowly defeated Alec Douglas-Hulme. I voted Labour then and have voted Labour in every General Election since. Occasionally, in local elections, I have voted tactically but never for the Conservatives. I want a government that puts public and social services at the heart of their beliefs. I want a fairer society, and one that is more caring and compassionate. People are obsessed with taxation, but taxes pay for the services we need and value. Taxation is only bad when it is unfair. It's time to overhaul the current unfair tax systems and dodges - all those offshore accounts etc.
How Keir Starmer will perform as PM is yet to be tested but I do believe that he will work diligently to serve the interests of the country. And I am hopeful that he will put democracy before "chumocracy".

That’s as far as I’ve got this week
