Starmer’s a decent bloke!

I know people will immediately tell me it’s part of the Labour election agenda but I keep coming across random short stories about small acts of kindness by Starmer. These stories aren’t major incidents and largely involve simple examples where Starmer has encouraged someone by action or deed. Whether electioneering hype or not, I can’t imagine reading similar stories about our current PM as sadly he seems so disconnected from the general public!

Wyllow3 Sat 01-Jun-24 18:59:11

Complete misread of "where the public were". I think Starmer is very aware of how people feel atm - lots of despair and confusion, and why he is presenting the policies he does. Limited but "steady as she goes".

Worse general election defeat since 1935, Corbyn and his policies.

There’s room for socialist views in the Labour Party Maybee. Always has been. It takes a good leader to hold a balance and not run scared. I think we have to reject the right wing media message that people won’t accept socialist policies - they do have their own agenda. A yougov poll in 2019 famously showed that Corbyn’s policies were universally popular in the UK and abroad, including in the US. The policies themselves are broadly what most people want.

But they didn’t vote for it on election day. That’s the only poll result that counts.

That may be the case but it wasn’t reflected in the result of the 2019 was it!

No but that’s missing the point isn’t it?

One poll on YouGov really doesn’t provide conclusive proof of anything nightowl, one poll on any topic can be way off the mark. That’s why on the election thread the poll of polls approach is being used.
Having said that, the methodology to implement more socialist policies is the biggest difference between Starmer and team’s approach and Corbyn’s, rather than the intent. So far Starmer is proving to be a more able political leader.

“Starmer is a decent man. He’s a decent party leader. I hope he’ll be a decent prime minister”

Agreed Iam64. I think he will be a good PM, because I genuinely believe he’ll put country first, party second. This is what we’ve been lacking for the past 14 years (perhaps with the brief exception of Theresa May)!

I quite agree, it'll be great to see someone of ordinary class like most of us in no 10, he got a scholarship to school his family couldn't have paid private fees.
He is a bit boring though but that seems to me just right for PM.
I like Rayner & Reeves too, they inspire confidence & I know they'll cope just fine.

He’s had a lot of flack over the years for supporting the government when it’s in the best interest of the country so imo he has always put country before party which I think is admirable.

I like Wes Streeting and Yvette Cooper too, its a strong shadow cabinet.

Can he be any worse than what we have had?

People need to see policies they see as reasonable and achievable.

Time to start critiquing the conservatives reign of austerity and winding down of all the services we rely upon so desperately.

Galaxy Sat 01-Jun-24 13:21:32

Labour functions best with a broad range of views. Blair managed to have both Corbyn and abbot under his umbrella.

It’s ok having socialist views but the electorate don’t vote for socialist policies ( especially the very people that need those policies the most: look at what happened to the red wall). They can’t achieve anything in permanent opposition.

Galaxy Sat 01-Jun-24 11:25:20

My experience of the labour party both locally and nationally is a battle between the centrists ad the left, mostly the centrists hold the power and rarely the left do. Both groups play a lot of games to ensure their control. I assume it's the same in all political parties just with different ideologies.

Wyllow I’d like the LP to be better than the Tories in this regard. I firmly believe the LP should be a broad church with room for socialist views. I can’t even believe I have to write that last bit.

Yes, in my many years in the Labour Party I have always experienced that broad church, but there has to be boundaries.
Inevitably there will be agreement or disagreement in individual decisions.

Anniebach Sat 01-Jun-24 10:49:48

Antisemitism is not socialist view,

nightowl Sat 01-Jun-24 10:40:15

My daughter’s constituency is an important and highly significant marginal seat. I think the LP have made a huge strategic mistake on this one, but the outcome remains to be seen.

Well my objection is being expected to vote for a candidate who does not live in the constituency.. and I suspect that the person who is replacing Caroline Lucas will also have difficulties because she lives in London.. though she is now renting in the constituency... I think flying in candidates is not well thought through whichever party they belong to..

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 10:19:59

There dare some on the left in my constituency spreading dissent about our candidate who was overwhelmingly the winner at our meeting to select the candidate. I’ve known the candidate as a neighbour for years. I also know those attempting to smear her. The only leader they’ve supported since Michael Foot is Corbyn.

Before we make it into a party political issue please note that Sunak and the conservatives habitually do the same:

Tory Fury as Sunak allies 'parachuted' into winnable seats

Both the Tories and Labour leaderships stand accused of 'rigging' safe seat selections for their friends and allies.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/sunak-allies-parachuted-winnable-tory-seats-b2553981.html

as you might find a paywall here's a flavour

"Rishi Sunak’s allies have been accused of “operating a chumocracy” in ”parachuting” special advisers and people close to the inner circle around the prime minister for winnable seats in the general election.

David Goss, the prime minister’s deputy political secretary, became the latest high profile figure from Downing Street to be selected for a winnable seat in Wellingborough and Rushden, recently lost to Labour in a gruelling by-election.

He followed former army officer James Clark, a special adviser to defence secretary Grant Shapps, being selected for Great Yarmouth last night

Others to get winnable seats include former Home Office special adviser Katie Lam landing the Weald of Kent constituency last year.

Russel moyle s behaviour to women who disagree with him has been consistently unpleasant. His behaviour is often erratic. I am trying to balance my concern over suspensions etc with my utter dislike of him!

I've done a lot of googling on Russel Moyle. This isn't a new complaint nor unknown. Major incident in the Hoc in January 2023 and others. Much as I also dislike people being replaced I agree with this one.

She can’t recall the posts because she was Brest feeding

She now claims women on the left are being targeted
