Breaking news, just now.

zakouma66 Wed 29-May-24 11:53:59

I'm oddly fascinated by the assertion that Angela Rayner is cosying up to Muslim males to get votes.

Just when you think the bar won't go any lower.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 11:50:00

Well atm I tend to believe Abbots own tweet (sorry, "x")

Maybe the confusion is as follows

assuming that as standing Labour MP she would automatically re stand

versus

having to join the other contenders in a selection process

LizzieDrip Wed 29-May-24 11:44:53

There appears to be some real ‘confusion’ around this issue. Times say she’s banned; BBC says it’s received text from Abbot saying she’s banned; X post from Abbot saying she’ll be campaigning for a Labour victory and is not banned. The ‘rumour mill’ is alive and well. When the truth does eventually emerge, I trust the media outlets that are currently conveying incorrect information (what used to be known as lies) will apologise??? I won’t hold my breath!

Starmer said he would clear the Party of antisemitism

HousePlantQueen Wed 29-May-24 11:38:43

I have mixed feelings about this, and about Dianne Abbott. I admire her achievements in what is still a white male dominated profession, she has achieved a great deal and suffered appalling treatment, online threats and such. BUT, when I listen to her, she makes my teeth itch, very condescending and patronising, speaks to interviewers as if she is exasperated with a five year old. As to being permitted to stand as a Labour candidate, it looks to me as if Starmer is clearing out the people who lost the last election ie Corbyn and Abbott.

MrsSquirrel Wed 29-May-24 11:37:22

Yes I agree they all seem suitable. I live nearby, though not in that constituency. I met Anntoinette Bramble at a local event and was very impressed with her.

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 11:30:35

Yes Mrs Squirrel

(repeat)
"Although her fate is officially yet to be decided, three Labour activists with links to Abbott’s constituency – Anntoinette Bramble, the deputy mayor of Hackney council; Sem Moema, the London assembly member for North East; and Mete Coban, a Labour councillor for Stoke Newington – have been widely talked about as possible replacements".

All look very suitable as replacements. I looked them up.

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 11:25:38

The decision to restore party whip was cleared yesterday, possible candidates would have been considered , there has
not been official notification that she cannot stand

MrsSquirrel Wed 29-May-24 11:03:35

Ooh I just saw Wyllow has posted similar to me, plus Antoinette Bramble. I guess it's not just a rumour.

It will be interesting to see who Labour has chosen in the short time available to replace Diane Abbott in her very safe Labour seat? Wes Streeting?

Reports I have read said possible other candidates are local councillors Sem Moema or Mete Conan. No idea if that's just a rumour, but both are plausible.

She said " It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism"

But she did explicitly include Jewish people in her list of those who had experienced a 'lesser' (my word, not hers) racism than black people. She must have forgotten about yellow stars and mass extermination. Without the word Jewish her letter may have been a bit more acceptable.

Yes she did MaizieD - I quoted earlier from her Observer letter she disputed claims that Irish, Jewish and traveller people suffer racism. She stated they experience prejudice it is true many types of white people with points of difference, such as red heads can experience this prejudice but they are not all their lives subject to racism

Anniebach Wed 29-May-24 10:36:26

No confusion, she has not been told she cannot stand in July
election, seems she assumed

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 10:31:28

She was ill during the last parliament but no reports of illness now.

He post on
X at 9.54am

Seems to suggest she has not been banned.

Is she well enough to stand? Certainly got the impression that she was not a well lady.

There still seems to be confusion about this. If she is popular with her constituents, then she should be allowed to stand. Labour need every seat they can get.
She really needs to lose her obsession with race!

So being popular excuses her anti semetism and anti white rhetorik just because Labour need her voters.
Rayner forgetting her feminism and pandering to muslim men, just to get votes.
Absolutely, appalling.
A dam good reason not to vote Labour.

Wondering what you meant by this?

Wyllow3 Wed 29-May-24 09:51:10

There is confusion: Abbot has just given out different information than party HQ - suggest we wait for confirmation there.

The selection process for the seat is due "in a few days". The Guardian names 3 possible (other) candidates

Urnmstogran I blooming hope so I’m wouldn’t think she’s got a hope in hell after what she allegedly did

NotSpaghetti Wed 29-May-24 08:46:55

I'm sure they will lose votes without her.
I expect someone has done the maths!

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 08:32:02

She got a majority of 33,000 at the last election. So, she’s obviously popular, locally.

Nothing to stop her standing as an independent.

She’s always seemed obsessed with race to me.

People can be obsessed with difference.

But its alright to be obsessed with anti semitism?

DiamondLily Wed 29-May-24 07:40:52

She has just confirmed, on radio, that she has been banned from representing Labour:

“Diane Abbott says Labour has barred her from standing for party at election

Diane Abbott has confirmed to the BBC that she's been barred by Labour from standing for the party at the general election.”
