Yep, it’s all over X

MaizieD Tue 28-May-24 18:40:07

It's being reported by various people on X/twitter.

I think it's a very bad decision.

Is the Labour lead crumbling?

GrannyRose15 Tue 28-May-24 18:41:50

Fir banning Dianne Abbot that is.

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 18:42:42

It just says this GrannyRose. …

“ Diane Abbott will not be allowed to stand as a Labour candidate at the general election, according to reports.

The MP for Hackney North & Stoke Newington was suspended from the party in April last year after she suggested that Jewish people did not experience racism “all their lives”.

The party leadership has decided that there are no circumstances in which she will stand for Labour on July 4, according to the Times.

Ms Abbott, who served in Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, has been an MP for 37 years.

Earlier today, Sir Keir Starmer had said that a decision would be made about Ms Abbott “in due course”.

He told broadcasters: “In the end, this is a matter that will have to be resolved by the National Executive Committee and they’ll do that in due course.”

Which isn’t really telling us anything!

Wyllow3 Tue 28-May-24 18:52:15

Not sure how I feel without some thought, but she is not actually a Labour MP atm, she is an Independent.
This is why

urms which poll is that? Only I’ve looked and can’t find it

Cheers

She had the Labour whip removed at the time of the letter she wrote, the 'investigation' was concluded in December and she was reprimanded. She has taken the course she was instructed to take. she apologised immediately after the letter was published.

I can't see any valid reason for not restoring the whip, all I can see is a determination not to have an MP who might not always stick to the 'party line'.

It looks like control freakery. It wouldn't hurt the LP to have a maverick MP or two.

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 19:04:37

I’ll try and find it again Whitewave and get back to you.

On Abbott …
Abbott banned. Labour civil war incoming?

Casdon Tue 28-May-24 19:06:03

I prefer to wait until we hear this reported on mainstream news before making any comment. We don’t have confirmation that it is true, or have any rationale.

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 19:06:51

I agree to some extent MaizieD I think Starmer is using her as an excuse to look tough/deny anti-semitism in the LP. A fresh beginning (of sorts) and Abbott has paid the price - after 37 years. Harsh. Perhaps.

petra Tue 28-May-24 19:10:51

This article says the same.

MSM really shouldn't be trusted.

And it is reported all over MSM

maddyone Tue 28-May-24 19:16:09

I heard this being discussed earlier today.

varian Tue 28-May-24 19:29:43

There is a lot about Diane Abbot I do not like. It did seem to me a tad hypocritical that she would not send her child to the local comprehensive school which presumably is OK for her constituents children.

However she has been a trailblazer - the first female black MP She has been subjected to more online abuse than any other MP - from racists and mysogynists.

From what I've heard she was cleared of misconduct by the LP in December, asked to do an anti-racist course, which she did, so why has she not been re-admitted to the LP in time to become an LP candidate in the GE?

Ilovecheese Tue 28-May-24 19:32:22

Looks like it is true. Starmer's party has ended the career of the first black woman to be elected to parliament. They ended it by a leak to the press after lying for some months that there was still an "ongoing" investigation. They prefer Natalie Elphick.

Visgir1 Tue 28-May-24 19:32:57

Labour 12 points lead on front page of updated Times.

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 19:35:17

THAT’S where I saw it Whitewave!
Thanks Visgirl 😁

Urmstongran Tue 28-May-24 19:37:19

Looks like it is true - course it was Ilovecheese! It was a breaking news in the Telegraph.
