Glorianny I’d like to ask you a question because I genuinely want to know … do you want the Labour Party, led by KS, to win this election or not?

Diane Abbott to be banned from standing for Labour.
(506 Posts)Breaking news, just now.
The far left have to cling to the Abbott saga,
Diane Abbott never "briefed that she was going to be banned". The Times picked up on the fact that she was still denied the whip and sitting as an Independent. Starmer had also consistently said the matter was not resolved and refused to restore the whip. Even when Diane Abbott was subjected to racist abuse by a conservative donor. www.shropshirestar.com/news/uk-news/2024/03/14/keir-starmer-dampens-hopes-of-imminent-return-of-labour-whip-to-diane-abbott/
We know now that she completed the required course at the end of February and the whips office knew that.
Starmer's treatment of her reveals a level of vindictiveness no leader of the Labour party should exhibit.
I was a fan/supporter if Michael Foot. I believed he had integrity and like his socialism, politics.
I still feel the same about Foot. The 1983 election taught me that my idealism was definitely not shared by the majority.
I was at three leadership hustings when Corbyn won. He got loudest applause. I knew we’d never win an election with him as leader. I also doubted his leadership abilities. I voted Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham
Often wonder how much healthier and happier our country would be if either of them had won
The far left have given Michael Foot and Corbyn as leaders
Marjgran
She was never banned. All MPs have to be checked for due diligence and accepted to stand in the GE, every single one. She knew this. She briefed that she was going to be banned- maybe she feared it and thought making it an issue made it less likely, or, more probably she wanted to hurt Starmer by causing a stink because she thinks J Corbyn has not been treated well. Once she had become a martyr last week it was very hard to call her a liar. Dirty tricks, but that’s politics.
DA, Corbyn and their supporters don’t seem to want a Labour government.
Compromise, reaching consensus to meet the needs and demands of the majority is beyond their capabilities.
Many of us were stunned when the right wing tories voted Truss as leader. We all knew she was a very bad choice and her ability to manage, to take people with her extremely limited (ok non existent unless you were a ragging right winger)
The tories have been falling apart because their extremists tried to take over.
We are within sight of a decent Labour govt aimed at supporting the many not the few but the Purists aren’t happy
Agree .Marjgran she has always been devoted to Corbyn,
his being out of the party would have angered her

I’m not sure if she’s genuinely confused, or just disruptive.🤔
I think thats a "have to see" question because last week was so full on after it kicked off starting with the Times article that she was "Banned", then everything followed. If she's a genuine LP supporter she'll work hard for the next government - but at the same time like all MP's have POV on issues as they come up.
If you cant get past the paywall on my reference to Conservative parachuting, here's a "clip"
The Independent has seen a list of 93 seats advertised to pre-vetted people on the Tory potential candidates list, with at least one more batch to come at the weekend

Yes, Corbyn parachuted several into seats in 2019

I don't agree with this except for exceptional circumstances, but its clearly part of politics UK.
Conservatives are having to do this right now

I am in the NW Durham constituency, I know the left are very cross about him. If you are talking about parachuting in to this seat, Corbyn did exactly the same (the boundaries have changed but it's what they did) and what a disaster that proved to be. The left are not in a position to give any lectures about parachuting into NW Durham seats.

^Diane Abbott will never, now, be anything but a backbencher, but this saga has been gold to right wing media and the Tories.🙄She seems to feel that she doesn’t want a non `’Corbynista” party to succeed^
Yes DiamondLily. I find it so disappointing. If the far left hate KS and the current LP so much, no-one is forcing them to remain in it. As I said, they’re perfectly at liberty to form their own party. To try and disrupt Labour’s campaign shows lack of compassion for the people of this country, who need a Labour government. I find this highly unpalatable, from so-called people of principle. My own political stance is left, but more than my own view, I want a Labour government for everyonein the UK.
No, I agree.
Corbyn, Abbott and Momentum members could join the SWP and chance their arm.
Mainstream voters won’t vote for what they see as hard left or hard right. Which is why politicians like Corbyn and Farage never get anywhere, when the votes are counted.🤷♀️
This is the best chance Labour have had for years - if they blow it, we will all be stuck with the disastrous Tories.🙄
Well brummie, the beauty of democracy is that the people in his constituency have the choice to vote for him or not.
Please give the names of Jews who you claim have been expelled from the Labour Party
Starmer has backtracked-what’s new? But look who he has parachuted into the safe seat of North Durham- hundreds of miles away from his home in Oxford. Luke Akehurst is an extremist supporter of Israel-tho not Jewish. In fact he is anti- Semitic, like many Zionists. Hundreds of his nasty tweets have been deleted to cover his tracks. He has also said that the UN is anti- Semitic because it is biased against Israel. Like many others he needs to stop conflating anti- Israel with anti- Semitic. Being critical of the state of Israel is not anti- Semitic it is anti- Zionism. The Labour Party has expelled Jewish members and Muslim members because they voiced support for Palestine. The only members they want to keep are the Labour friends of Israel.

Me too. I wrote to Dianne begging her to not do anything to prevent a Labour win, something the country is desperate for.

I find it heartbreaking that so-called Labour members / supporters are intent on ‘splitting’ the party. They are feeding the right-wing media with ammunition for them to fire the guns. The left wing of the party (of which I am one) had their chance at the last election. The public clearly told them how they felt. That’s democracy - thank God. Now, when Labour has a chance of winning and changing the country for the better, disrupters can’t find it within themselves to accept it. I have done so, because I want a Labour government. Those inside the party who don’t really want Labour to succeed should take the democratic option and form their own party. See how well that goes!

nightowl it’s called towing the party line. It’s what the Tories do all the time … which is why they’re so damn good at winning elections!
Banning anti semites from the Labour Party is not being vindictive
Exactly that Glorianny.
Our excellent local LP candidate is being extremely careful what he says and posts as he has seen what happened to a colleague and good friend in this constituency who was a bit too left wing. I noticed that he actually lied on his FB page when asked his views about events in a neighbouring constituency, rather than give a view. I fully understand why he did it and it won’t affect my support of him, but it makes me very uncomfortable to think people are afraid to speak out on important matters in case they are cancelled.
All very worthy Glorianny but did it win the election in 2019? Yes KS has had to be ruthless in order to make the LP electable. He’s never made any bones about that - he wants to win this election. Politics is ruthless - the Tories know that, which is why they’re so damn good at winning elections.
It's her choice now so let's see what she decides.
It was clearly a PR error to ban her. She's suffered a huge amount of personal harassment and abuse. She's not a favourite of mine and is a supporter of Corbyn which is a no no in my book but none the less it looks vindictive and ungenerous to ban her and the decision has come back to bite the leadership.
