I find it heartbreaking that so-called Labour members / supporters are intent on ‘splitting’ the party. They are feeding the right-wing media with ammunition for them to fire the guns. The left wing of the party (of which I am one) had their chance at the last election. The public clearly told them how they felt. That’s democracy - thank God. Now, when Labour has a chance of winning and changing the country for the better, disrupters can’t find it within themselves to accept it. I have done so, because I want a Labour government. Those inside the party who don’t really want Labour to succeed should take the democratic option and form their own party. See how well that goes!

Very much agree. We desperately need a change of government and given the restricted room for manoeuvre because of economic and social conditions much is not "ideal".

No one wants to "split the party" what we want is for Labour to remain the broadchurch it has always been. A place someone with left wing views can state them openly and loudly without being afraid of losing their membership. Somewhere where ideas and policies can be debated and discussed without fear, and a compromise reached. Democracy involves listening to others and not chucking them out because you don't like what they are saying.

Even if you don't mean it. The only reason they are allowing this unfit woman to stand, is votes

It's a lot more complicated than that.

Had Abbott stood down one of the alternative candidates would have won for Labour

It's a safe seat, and the alternative candidates local all their lives and reflecting the backgrounds of people in the area. Abbott has gained great respect for good work done many times in her long career. She is locally very popular and respected, btw, and that has been part of my reaching my own conclusions about this matter.

We are speculating about her health, and there may be a by election, but on the whole it was imo the only decision to make.

NEC tell her she physically fit to stand for Parliament. ?

her apology was false ?

Today’s Telegraph:

“ Instead, Sir Keir looks first ungracious, even vindictive, and then weak. He showed a want of diplomatic skills and took refuge in process (“We must wait for the NEC’s decision”), which never works in the heat of an election campaign. ”

Well what else do we expect from right wing MSM? Sunak is parachuting in huge numbers of candidates into "safe seats" and where's the details of that in certain papers?

But in this case the MSM is absolutely right.
Dianne Abbott had the whip withdrawn because of remarks she made and was asked to complete an antisemitism course. She did this and at the end of February the whip's office acknowledged she had done it. She should therefore have been accepted back into the PLP and had the whip restored. She wasn't.
As yourself why? Why a woman who has been a Labour MP for 30+ years remained from March to May 28th as an Independent?
Had the proper process been followed there would have been no story for the right wing press to print. She would have been a sitting Labour MP, which she became after the story was printed
Starmer created the circumstances for the story and it has come back to bite him.

You can take a course. You can say anything to say you're sorry. Even if you don't mean it. The only reason they are allowing this unfit woman to stand, is votes.

mousemac, try reading the article published in the Telegraph. It will surprise you.

Annma Sat 01-Jun-24 12:30:12

She has got the Labour whip back and can stand as a Labour mp if she so wishes.Love her or hate her she has been a trailblazer for the party- first black female mp etc.Labour has always been a broad church and should always be so.It’s a bit rich for KS to welcome a rabid right winger like Natalie Elphicke and throw poor Diane under a bus.

Yes it would have been better to resolve sitting MP matter sooner.

Starmer however was not "vindictive" and was correct, its an NEC matter.

It was in the pipeline for 2 months which included certainly locally and definitely nationally the big build up to the local elections - then the announcement of a GE precipitated events.

Her standing as a Labour MP in the election is an NEC matter.

The withdrawal of the whip rests with the whip's office which always works very closely with the leader's office. Starmer must have influenced restoring it.

This is a very interesting view on what happened and what will happen from a member of the NEC www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM-Ca97lKi0

such a wonderful man Tony Benn was.. a true progressive

DiamondLily Sat 01-Jun-24 12:23:33

She’s now saying she won’t confirm she intends to stand until the NEC meet on Tuesday. According to an interview on LBC. I don’t know what all the drama is about now.

I love these chats. Thanks everyone.

I thought Starmer had now given in to Rayner and agreed that Abbott may now stand if she wishes, I'm sure I read that last night.

A very bad move if that's the case.

Media loving this. Keir is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. He has to tread a careful path. Hope this story dies a death. He was ambushed by the left and maybe Angela Rayner. This story has been the BBC main story for days. I can remember when Dianne Abbot was ridiculed by the media, now she is a martyr. What about the Tory defections and disasters. Makes me switch off from the news.

There is a serious risk attached to believing anything published in the Telegraph.

I imagine the manifestos will come out after the candidates are all in place ronib so local campaigns have the person in place. but have to bee soon given tight timeline!

ronib Sat 01-Jun-24 10:11:54

When are the manifestos going to be available? When are the real problems facing this country going to be debated if not tackled? What exactly do we expect from modern day government?
