Yes DiamondLily it’s the first time for six days that DA hasn’t been mentioned in the news - thank God. Every cloud …grin

Of course Glorianny, Diane Abbott is as pure as the driven snow.she didn’t get suspended, or tweet incorrect or inflammatory information, ever.

She did. She apologised. She did her penance.
How long do you think the whip should have suspended her for?
Just as long as Starner fancied?? On what grounds?
Is it fair to say to someone "You've done this. To atone you have to do this." And when they've done it continue to punish them?

Penance, of course she did. 😂 Tory MPs have apologise for wrong sayings and still been villified. Not saint Diane, she who must reel the votes in for Starmer, lord help us if she becomes Home Secretary, even worse Chancellor.
She's had her day, done her bit, time to retire.

Starmer will never elect her to a cabinet position, thank God.

Farage has now knocked her off of the headlines with his announcement.🙄

^Prof Asma Khalil, the vice president for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said structural racism and the unconscious bias of healthcare professionals could be a factor contributing to the disparity.^

'could be ' is the important phrase in that quote.

There are many, many factors involved and I doubt if many people reading this have the knowledge or experience to debate this at a serious level. That does not mean that they have to accept it as indisputable it either.

But if there is any possibility (and of course there is or the professor would not have said could be) it shows that 28 years after Abbott pointed out (however inelegantly) that the health needs of black women would not satisfactorily be met a white workforce the same conditions exist. And those conditions are killing black women and babies. Of course there are other factors. But trying to castigate Abbot isn't justified. Perhaps if the idea had been accepted things would be different.

The problem is that because she makes mistakes people feel they are entitled to rubbish her. But it is also because she's a woman and black.

Because of the above Glorianny

Was the whip withdrawn from the Tory MPs who were "villified" Freya5.? If not how were they villified?

Glorianny stop playing the race card,

Are you saying more black women and babies don't die Annie?
Or that Prof Asma Khalil is wrong?

^How long do you think the whip should have suspended her for? Just as long as Starmer fancied?? On what grounds?^

On the grounds that Starmer is the leader of the Labour party and trying to fight an election and he has doubts about her suitability as an MP.

I was surprised to learn that Diane-Abbott-the-great-roll- (sic) -model has never in her 37 years as MP held ministerial office, so obviously not just Starmer who has doubts about her.

There was no election.
Abbottt completed the assignment at the end of February and was told by the whip's office it was satisfactory.
She was then denied the whip well before the election was announced.
Starmer doesn't choose Labour MPs the local party and the electorate do.

Glorianny Mon 03-Jun-24 15:49:37

So she has been ambitious, she's had some controversial ideas.
As far as
In 1996 she said that "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable as nurses at her local hospital because they had "never met a black person before”
She may have phrased it badly but she is in essence right. Racial differences in the health system are appalling
www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/08/black-women-in-england-suffer-more-serious-birth-complications-analysis-finds#:~:text=Black%20women%20in%20the%20UK,
This says it better

Prof Asma Khalil, the vice president for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said structural racism and the unconscious bias of healthcare professionals could be a factor contributing to the disparity

And this is 28 years after Abbott's statement. We should be appalled, instead someone blames her. Just think how many black women and babies might have lived if we had recognised what was happening.

The problem is that because she makes mistakes people feel they are entitled to rubbish her. But it is also because she's a woman and black.

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-24 15:45:30

Apart from being the first black Women MP why is she call a trail blazer, can’t recall Bernie Grant being called a trail blazer

eazybee Mon 03-Jun-24 15:13:20

She has not held Ministerial office, fact. Diane-Abbot-the-giant-roll-model is not a natural back bencher. She has constantly sought advancement both in and out of parliament; came last in attempt to be new Labour party leader versus Ed Miliband not selected as a candidate for mayor of London, versus Sadiq Khan, and very fortunately rejected an offer to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.

Anniebach Mon 03-Jun-24 14:50:50

Abbott was appointed shadow Home Secretary when Corbyn became leader, and shadow health secretary ,

Wyllow3 Mon 03-Jun-24 14:44:13

There are always some people who are natural back benchers in every party - for a variety of reasons.

Actual facts (wiki)
"Abbott has served on a number of parliamentary committees on social and international issues and held shadow ministerial positions in successive Shadow Cabinets. For most of the 1990s, she also served on the Treasury Select Committee of the House of Commons"

Well, lets see how things pan out - she has chosen to stay in the L party rather than go Independent, which I am glad about because I welcome a diversity of views - but use social media appropriately.

Iam64 Mon 03-Jun-24 14:23:00

She does indeed. Given her repeated offensive comments, how sincere are the apologies, how much can she learn from a course on her various prejudices

LizzieDrip Mon 03-Jun-24 14:16:01

Ms Abbot appears to make a habit of making potentially offensive comments … and apologising later!

Iam64 Mon 03-Jun-24 14:14:46

Tedious !

Iam64 Mon 03-Jun-24 14:14:37

No filter is a good way of describing Diane Abbott. This painting her as a hero all the time and Starmerthe permanent bad guy/bully is teeious

Your memory is shorter than mine if you think this was a one off. Specifically on her views it goes back years, In 1996 she said that "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were unsuitable as nurses at her local hospital because they had "never met a black person before”. She tweeted in 2012: "White people love playing 'divide and rule'. We should not play their game." She later apologised for "any offence caused”.
That’s apart from the other occasions when her copybook has been blotted. As I said earlier, she has no filter.

Was that a deliberate spelling mistake Glorianny?

Have you noticed that Daiane Abbott isn’t the only black female MP in the Labour Party, or the shadow cabinet nor is she the most articulate or well informed? I agree that respect should be given to her for her achievements in the past, but that is not the same thing as excusing her poor behaviour now or in the future.

Yes: Time for Abbott to campaign for the Labour Party until the elections, and voice disagreements on policy alongside other MP's, respecting her voice on policy as events unfold.
