Seems Farage has an announcement to make at 4pm today.

Hmm.
Standing as a Reform MP after all?
Emigrating to America to canvass for Trump?
Joining the Tory party?
None of the above?

I shall tune in out of curiosity.

Farage - and I have to presume Reform - want to get out of the ECHR.

That is what I was thinking to write yesterday. But wasnt sure of my facts. And then something to do with the Dublin Agreement would come into play. Again, dont know enough facts.

I believe Sunak referred to leaving the ECHR during the debate but it was overshadowed by the £2,000 lie.

Sunak has stated in the past his full support for the ECHR, his threat to leave this is to pacify the right wing. He knows that it will never happen.

I'm a member of the European Movement UK and there was a recent Zoom call with Dominic Grieve, Jessica Simor KC, (she was the barrister who took the case re climate change against Switzerland recently) and Andrew Cutting who works in Strasbourg.. they were discussing how Richard Tice and Suella Braverman are trying to leave the ECHR and the disastrous consequences if it happens. They explained exactly how the court was set up and how it functions. It can be seen on Youtube called 75th Anniversary Film European Movement UK.. I highly recommend watching it..

I don’t like Nige but he is the best speaker by a country mile. I think he will attract a lot of disenchanted ex Conservatives who wouldn’t vote Labour in a fit. He seems very energetic and has a few policies. He knows Labour will be elected but his plan is to work on the election after this one and put himself forward as a potential PM. Aarrggh. What a mess.

I copied this from Facebook…
‘Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
This was Churchill’s hope - that a united Europe could prevent the horrors of the Second World War and the Holocaust from ever being repeated.
Central to this was a human rights charter, which became the European Convention on Human Rights.
Remember this, when Sunak threatens to withdraw from the ECHR.’

Mt61 absolutely agree with you! They are only 2 points behind the Tories in the polls apparently. Shows how much support Nigel has, just not on here!

I for one like Nigel, he speaks the truth- other leaders, absolutely no charisma or backbone- Rishi just clutching at straws.. telling us what he thinks he wants us to hear! Don’t get me started on Stamer, he’s not much better. . think they are both out of touch with the state of the NHS. Labour will win, hands down, so will vote reform! Don’t believe the mainstream media!

Interesting to think Starmer is out of touch with the NHS given his mother worked within it for many years and his wife still does.

Just out of interest, what “truth” is good ole Nige speaking?

Yes, in the end a compromise was brokered.

By the way, it's worth noting that the only other European nations not signed up to the ECHR are Belarus, and Russia

Great company.....

It would be an utter catastrophe to pull out and only a very stupid, short sighted person/group would even begin to suggest this.

I completely agree.. absolute madness.. but all it needs is one letter from the PM.. let's hope good sense prevails

I think it’s actually a combination of people cuts AND poor leadership. Also people just don’t bother reporting “low level” crime as they think it’s a waste of time. I see their point but those statistics are used each year to calculate how many police should be allocated to certain areas.

Police are often from different divisions and on overtime for things like demos/football/big events.

I didn’t say YOU sneered Cossy.
It was in itself a complete sentence about the fact of getting 4 seats “not to be sneered at”.
It’s a saying.
It wasn’t directed at anybody personally!

Fair enough. It doesn’t changed my view that I give not one fig for anything Farage may or may not do or say.

Urmstongran Thu 06-Jun-24 09:24:55

It’s becoming ‘lawless Britain’ DiamondLily. No police action for crimes yet plenty in the streets to police demo events.

Yes that was a surprise Whitewave! I really do think some voters are now really considering Reform.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 06-Jun-24 08:20:09

urms Sky last night suggesting that the Spectator is now supporting Reform!!

Thought that would please you 😀

I’ve read Police don’t turn up for shoplifting of under £200. That what the lady in Boots told me last year. “We just move the expensive stuff behind the tills and put the empty boxes on the shelves for the customers who then pick up to bring to the till”.

Surely Whitewave we’ve ALL seen this? It can’t just be in Urmston!
🤣

Well, I’ll be honest here. And, no, I’m not a Tory groupie lol. I live on London outskirts, covered by the Met police.

Even when entire shelves are cleared by shoplifting gangs, police very rarely appear. It’s usually things like alcohol, tobacco and they are often armed with knives.

The police say it’s “low priority”.

Now, it could be put down to Tory cuts, over 14 years, or it could be put down to poor leadership in various police forces.

But, it’s getting worse. And, I’m not sure a new government will be able to change this much.🤷‍♀️

Are you thinking of the Good Friday Agreement. You know, the one negotiated during the Blair government, which ended 30 years of horrific violence and terrorism in Northern Ireland and here on the UK mainland. The ECHR is a key part of that agreement, as is the open border between NI and TheRoI.

The Dublin Agreement was the intra EU agreement under which we would return asylum seekers to the EU safe country they'd left to come to the UK. Stupid Brexit put a stop to that..

It's in Reform Policy documents.

"Mr Farage’s party has pledged to leave the ECHR in its election offer, with the Reform leader suggesting it would ensure “sovereignty” over the UK’s borders."

has called for a referendum on quitting the ECHR
yes, a referendum.

4 seats for Reform? Not to be sneered at. Caroline Lucas would’ve been overjoyed with that many for the Greens! (back in the day)

I’m not sneering at all, I’m just not fazed!

Or in the words of Catherine Tate, “I’m not bovvered”

Surely all that will happen is that up to four seats will potentially be stolen (from Tory seats), by Reform candidates, one of which may, or may not be, Nigel Farage. Only very disgruntled Tory voters are likely to vote for Reform. Farage has already been unsuccessful 7 times to gain a seat as a UK MP and he might find it’s quite hard work being an MP particularly in a deprived constituency. He simply cannot bear not be in the news. He’s tedious, a mild annoyance, nothing less, nothing more. Btw my knickers are fine thanks.
