I don’t understand the ins and outs of it all but from what I heard on the news last night the reason they want to be based in London and not America is because the UK isn’t concerned about it’s human rights record sad. Is this the sort of country we have become?

You can look up ethical ratings on this site, or there are others

Apart from their appalling treatment of workers , companies like Shein and Temu are also suspected of misusing the details of customers and collaboration with the Chinese Government to undermine western economies.

Just checked labels from some of my clothes , 3 items from The White Stuff made in Bangladesh , a Roman dress made in China a Whistles dress and a couple of Sainsbury’s TU jumpers made in Turkey.
Most of these not cheap brands but I haven’t a clue of the human rights or working conditions of the manufacturers they use, I suspect not good.

The report also found that the world’s largest luxury brands are among the worst offenders in addressing the worse forms of exploitation in their supply chains, with an average score of 31 out of 100.

French luxury goods company Kering (owner of the Alexander McQueen and Gucci labels) scored 41 out of 100, while LVMH (owner of the Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton labels) scored 19 out of 100. Tapestry (owner of the Coach and Kate Spade labels), assessed for the first time this year, scored 16 out of 100.

In 2022, the BBC revealed that workers in Indian factories working for Ralph Lauren were routinely exploited. “Women working at a Ralph Lauren supplier said they had been forced to stay overnight to complete orders, sometimes requiring them to sleep on the factory floor,” reports the BBC.

How can "they", Shein, force anything when they are simply a platform for seller's to showcase their goods?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Jun-24 18:51:26

Having now been made aware of the conditions of the workforce I will let my family members know.

Hopefully they will not purchase anything else from Shein, they are fortunate that they can afford shop elsewhere, I am mindful that many people cannot.

"Good quality" can still be forced labour.

Re Shein,
It appears that Uyghur forced labor is used to make its low-priced apparel and home goods. [Reuters]

I cannot buy from them.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 04-Jun-24 18:30:31

I agree. Does anyone’s life depend on buying cheap stuff or are they just feeding a ‘I must buy more clothes/whatever/spend money’ addiction? I see it on GN but obviously won’t name names.

BlueBelle
I think I’ve not made my views clear on companies like Shien.
In about 2016? I was heavily involved in a group on FB ( now Meta) to get the adverts for these companies removed.
At the time there were 260 of these companies. I once had the list of all the companies.
I was suspended several time until I was permanently banned.

My comments Re Amazon relate to the fact that all the cheap clothing on there come from the same factories but because it’s amazon, it’s somehow acceptable.

My comments Re quality relate to the hundreds of items I’ve seen and handled. Some Shein clothing really is good quality.

So much hypocrisy. Almost all of our cheap goods are cheap because someone, somewhere is paying the price. It is usually in China.
Not just cheap inter-net companies but most major high street stores too, and not just clothes either- from furniture to food stuffs.
We have no choice anymore but to buy produce cheaply because someone, somewhere is also making a massive profit from it. It is usually the Chinese.

We do still have a choice, it’s just more expensive and more effort to source goods that aren’t made in China. It’s become more difficult since many smaller companies in the EU opt not to supply the UK now, but it’s still possible.

DiamondLily Tue 04-Jun-24 17:58:02

I think it was about the allegations of them using forced labour.

I try never to buy from China, won’t ever visit there either. It’s an outrage the way China treats people.

It’s not a sweatshop though they are trapped they have to work 75 hours a week they have their paperwork taken away they are virtual prisoners
Petra so you approve of the working conditions because the stitching is better 🤷🏼‍♂️

PamelaJ1 Tue 04-Jun-24 16:58:11

I was looking for a ‘made in’ label on a dress the other day but couldn’t find one. I thought it was mandatory but I could be wrong. Anyone know?
I don’t buy anything if I don’t know where it comes from. Sometimes it’s very difficult to buy from a ‘good country’ but I certainly try.
I’ve saved a lot of money this way!

petra Tue 04-Jun-24 16:52:28

I’ve seen far higher quality of sewing and finish on some Shien clothing than I have on many mid range clothing found in our high street shops.

The items on Shein are also on Amazon, most of the time.

Nobody holds their nose when they order from Amazon, do they 🤔

MissAdventure Tue 04-Jun-24 16:47:42

It's a marketplace, just as Amazon is.
All different sellers.

There's no benefit to paying more for the same item, from the same seller on Amazon, or somewhere more pricy than Amazon.

DiamondLily Tue 04-Jun-24 16:45:03

Well, if people use Primark or Boo-Hoo, they are doing the same.🤷‍♀️

Urmstongran Tue 04-Jun-24 16:44:50

I have a dress from Shein. It was bought for me. I’d never heard of them but I must admit every time I wear it someone comments favourably.

I can however understand why our Yorkshire Lass hates the company with a passion!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Jun-24 14:41:04

I have never used them myself, but I can understand that those on limited budgets have little choice where to buy theirs and their children’s clothes from.

AGAA4 Tue 04-Jun-24 14:39:12

I would never buy from them. It is obvious from the price of their clothes that they use sweatshops.

Georgesgran Tue 04-Jun-24 14:38:56

I’m with GSM
Horrible companies.
