I don’t understand the ins and outs of it all but from what I heard on the news last night the reason they want to be based in London and not America is because the UK isn’t concerned about it’s human rights record sad. Is this the sort of country we have become?

Sarnia Tue 04-Jun-24 13:23:13

Do they mean using foreign sweatshop labour? If so, there are other big companies using that same process. Adidas, Primark, H&M, Gap and Nike to name just a few. Are people going to boycott their goods? I daresay their work conditions are far from ideal but it may be the only job available to them to help support their families.

I’d never heard of it, but the BBC have an article.

Horrible cheap poorly made clothes that are worn once and then chucked into landfill not the sort of company we should be lauding - the USA don’t want them because they are linked to the Chinese government.

My DiL had on a stunning silk dress at the weekend, I thought it was either high end high street or designer which is where she usually buys her clothes, I was astounded when she said it was from Shein and would never have guessed it wasn’t designer.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 04-Jun-24 14:06:06

Nothing on this earth would induce me to buy from them.

Jaxjacky Tue 04-Jun-24 14:29:54

I wouldn’t touch Sheen or Temu, I’m also aware that a number of ‘high end’ brands manufacture in China now, good job I don’t buy many clothes.

NotSpaghetti Tue 04-Jun-24 14:35:15

They were apparently using forced labour - not "just" sweatshops!

NotSpaghetti Tue 04-Jun-24 14:37:21

"The online fast-fashion retailer, which manufactures most of its merchandise in China, faces criticism that Uyghur forced labor is used to make its low-priced apparel and home goods." [Reuters]

I’m with GSM
Horrible companies.

AGAA4 Tue 04-Jun-24 14:39:12

I would never buy from them. It is obvious from the price of their clothes that they use sweatshops.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 04-Jun-24 14:41:04

I have never used them myself, but I can understand that those on limited budgets have little choice where to buy theirs and their children’s clothes from.

MissAdventure Tue 04-Jun-24 16:35:36

The items on Shein are also on Amazon, most of the time.

Urmstongran Tue 04-Jun-24 16:44:50

I have a dress from Shein. It was bought for me. I’d never heard of them but I must admit every time I wear it someone comments favourably.

I can however understand why our Yorkshire Lass hates the company with a passion!

DiamondLily Tue 04-Jun-24 16:45:03

Well, if people use Primark or Boo-Hoo, they are doing the same.🤷‍♀️

MissAdventure Tue 04-Jun-24 16:47:42

It's a marketplace, just as Amazon is.
All different sellers.

There's no benefit to paying more for the same item, from the same seller on Amazon, or somewhere more pricy than Amazon.

Nobody holds their nose when they order from Amazon, do they 🤔

petra Tue 04-Jun-24 16:52:28

I’ve seen far higher quality of sewing and finish on some Shien clothing than I have on many mid range clothing found in our high street shops.

PamelaJ1 Tue 04-Jun-24 16:58:11

I was looking for a ‘made in’ label on a dress the other day but couldn’t find one. I thought it was mandatory but I could be wrong. Anyone know?
I don’t buy anything if I don’t know where it comes from. Sometimes it’s very difficult to buy from a ‘good country’ but I certainly try.
I’ve saved a lot of money this way!

BlueBelle Tue 04-Jun-24 17:50:33

It’s not a sweatshop though they are trapped they have to work 75 hours a week they have their paperwork taken away they are virtual prisoners
Petra so you approve of the working conditions because the stitching is better 🤷🏼‍♂️

keepingquiet Tue 04-Jun-24 17:56:51

So much hypocrisy. Almost all of our cheap goods are cheap because someone, somewhere is paying the price. It is usually in China.
Not just cheap inter-net companies but most major high street stores too, and not just clothes either- from furniture to food stuffs.
We have no choice anymore but to buy produce cheaply because someone, somewhere is also making a massive profit from it. It is usually the Chinese.

Allsorts Tue 04-Jun-24 17:57:00

I try never to buy from China, won’t ever visit there either. It’s an outrage the way China treats people.

DiamondLily Tue 04-Jun-24 17:58:02

I think it was about the allegations of them using forced labour.

We do still have a choice, it’s just more expensive and more effort to source goods that aren’t made in China. It’s become more difficult since many smaller companies in the EU opt not to supply the UK now, but it’s still possible.

BlueBelle
I think I’ve not made my views clear on companies like Shien.
In about 2016? I was heavily involved in a group on FB ( now Meta) to get the adverts for these companies removed.
At the time there were 260 of these companies. I once had the list of all the companies.
I was suspended several time until I was permanently banned.

My comments Re Amazon relate to the fact that all the cheap clothing on there come from the same factories but because it’s amazon, it’s somehow acceptable.

My comments Re quality relate to the hundreds of items I’ve seen and handled. Some Shein clothing really is good quality.
