Treasury Permanent Secretary - Sunak lied about civil servants and £2k

So even the Tory bible - The Spectator - has left the Tories and supporting Reform! That should please urms.

On Sunak’s assumptions which arrived at £2000 extra tax under Labour, using the same assumptions they would rise by £3000 under the Tories.

What nonsense it all is.

It is bizarre - we look across the Atlantic, and wonder how on earth half a nation can be taken in by Trumps lies and be prepared to vote for him.

But honestly - we don’t have to look so far away really.

Whenever a Tory's lips move, a lie comes out. It is rather sad reading intelligent (or so I thought) people on here desperately trying to defend the indefensible. Or maybe they don't mind being lied to?

The Treasury's calculations were based on Tory Advisors' version of as many Labour policies as they could find, not on Labour's own statements. Garbage in. Garbage out. And the £2,000 was misleading in that it was a figure for 4 years of taxes and not £2K a year - Sunak did not make that clear: lie by omission. The £38m quoted by the Tories was not a Treasury figure. The Perm Dec has repudiated the way it was presented as a Treasury product.

Since Johnson, I just assume both the Cabinet and the Shadow Cabinet are all manipulating the truth (lying) until I have evidence to the contrary.

Was it last week one said about an extra 5,000 hospital beds, forgetting that they'd cut 20,000?

I saw Sunak behaving like an arrogant, over-privileged liar who repeated his lie approx 12 times, and constantly reminded us that the ‘plan is working’ - another lie!

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho repeated the claim on Wednesday, saying it was based on “official costings from the Treasury” and suggested it had been “signed off” by Mr Bowler.

She told BBC Breakfast: “I’ve worked in the Treasury and I can tell you that these are brilliant, independent civil servants and they would not be putting anything dodgy in there.”

I desperately wanted Starmer to do well last night but am not sure that the tactic of waiting till the next morning to come across with the letter was very wise. If he had the letter he had the opportunity to stop Sunak in his tracks which would have been worth doing, and it would have cast doubt over what he said next.

It was a poor tactic.

Because the damage is done.

If he (Starmer) had the information contained in the letter - he should have used it - unless of course he was constrained from doing so 'officially'.

Labour are doing well - which means those on the right with vested interests are going to work as hard as they can to discredit Starmer. It's their job! It's politics 101!

GSM - who can claim not to be biased?

None of us can. I've read so many posts on GN presenting this or that set of information as "Fact" when its clearly biased.

We just have to go by our judgements about how well and effectively the points were made, if they ring true, if facts given can be checked, how well respected the speaker is and with whom, and so on.

We knew that was going to happen from the right wing MSM. It was just a question of what and when.

Judging by the audiences' reaction to conscription last night I expect it to quietly recede from the headlines.

How on earth does Sunak think he is going to get away with these whoppers is beyond me.

It’s as if he has a suicide wish.

It doesn’t matter that it is a lie. The £2000 per household hangs there for consumption by those who do not bother to enquire beyond headlines.

Maybe you're politically biased GSM … and before you respond with ‘so are you’, yes I am! I am biased towards Labour because I believe they will be the best government for the majority of people in this country. I’m also fed up with Tory PMs lying to the British public.

Surely the point is that whether or not you agree with either man's policies or politics, telling lies is simply not acceptable. Desperate attempts to discredit Starmer will not detract from that.
