Was this really necessary France 🇫🇷?

“British paratroopers who dropped into Normandy ahead of D-Day commemorations were met by French border officials.

Hundreds of soldiers jumped into the same rural drop zone which was used on D-Day 80 years ago on Wednesday.

Footage shows soldiers wearing camouflage combat gear walking towards a temporary customs check and producing their travel documents.

French security officials, who were standing behind a wooden desk with two laptops on top, then checked their passports.“

That was in the Telegraph earlier.

Surely, the Soldiers' Passport Details could have been collated by the F.O. or Miltary body for D-Day Commemoration and presented in a single document?

My husband wants to know if the French asked for our troops passports and travel documents on 6th June 1944 too?
Probably not!

Was this thread really necessary.

No, it absolutely isn't. My father was at D Day and he would have been pretty disgusted by the underlying sentiment going on here.

I agree.
There have been some pretty shameful opinions expressed and some inappropriate turns of phrase. Can we just leave it?

No threads are necessary.

In fact, I found some posts quite interesting.

Wasnt Dday about giving people freedom back?

Lest we forget

I do hope (nothing I've read so far is clear) that this was a lovely gesture by the French to stamp the passports with the commemorative date.
If so, I for one Thank them profusely for enabling the Ptroopers request.

Some appalling xenophobic comments on here. No-one 'participating' was asked for Passport or Proof of Identity.
Also ridiculous that Putin wasn't at the occasion. The Soviet Union was vital in defeating Nazi Germany.

Considering his invasion of a friendly country, I think his absense was to be applauded. The Russia who helped defeat the Nazi regime has gone. Lost in the Putin era, a state now that does not hesitate to murder Putins opponents.

Well perhaps that should have been declared more openly, not kept hush hush. Maybe then people would understand why. S...t stirring msm once again.

You obviously missed the fact that there is an international arrest warrant for Putin. There are 123 counties he can’t visit.
Who do you think helped Russia against the nazis: us with our Russian convoys, my father was on those convoys.

Posted on another thread but relevant here, too. The real reason why Sunak left early. Memories of Truss’s comments about France here. So much for all the brave people in the resistance who lost their lives…honestly the class snobbery and French bashing in this forum is beginning to sicken me.

Putin is the President of Russia. Zelenskyy ought not to have attended if Putin was not. Ukraine actively supported Nazi Germany and was responsible for the death of 30,000 Jews in one weekend. Google Stepan Bandera. Fascist.

GranJan60 Sat 08-Jun-24 16:39:37

I read reports that the French officials were actually asked to be there as many of those taking part wanted a stamp in their passport to commemorate the event.
It was heartwarming to see the enthusiasm with which the veterans were greeted and lovely to read about the thanks they received.

To set the record straight, there are a few French politicians here jumping up and down and poking fun at their own bureaucracy over this event. One is even calling it, " l'absurdité macronienne!" Apparently, all the names and photo fits of the British paras were sent in advance and cleared to land anyway. It would be unlikely that a random terrorist were to crop up amongst them.

The Germans murdered millions of Jews, gypsies and people they considered to be physically degenerate in their death camps. Chancellor Scholz attended the D Day commemoration ceremonies. We don't bear 80+ year old grudges when countries have changed their ways.

I find your posts completely inappropriate.

I think it has more to do with stamping passports with the exact date - 6th June 2024 - as the anniversary of D Day. Which is something that cannot be taken away from the troops parachuting in.
"I was there on the anniversary and here is irrefutable proof of that" sort of thing.

^Meanwhile, our PM left the event early to helicopter back for a TV interview. Respectful or what^?
Yes, I did wonder about that. It wasn't a live interview was it?
Yesterday, evening in France Macron was interviewed on live TV at 8pm, so dedpite his earlier wonky time keeping, ⌚️ , he managed to fit everything in. He talked about the EU elections, Ukraine and Israel/Gaza. Interestingly, I am reading reports today that Macron might have used up too much air time in the interview, because during election campaigns in France, the amount of time given to a certain candidate or party is counted according to strict rules. It's the same for the Head of State.

You just cannot stop can you?

Sorry Joseann this was not meant for you but for Urmstongran

My DH watched some of the old footage of survivors talking about their experiences. One was of a German gunner who was slaughtering the others as they landed. Apparently he kept saying to himself, why do they keep coming, why don't they stop. He did in the end - he walked away.

We forget that on all sides there were very young men, doing as they were told.

I agree with you. Everything I watched showed the affection the liberators were held in by the French.

win I honestly don’t follow what you’re trying to say to me.
What ‘can’t I stop’?
🤔

All the criticising on a day like today, a lot of this thread is horrible and it just goes on and on. As said above none of it is necessary today, on a day where we should just show our respect and be extremely grateful.

Exactly that. So sad.

I don’t agree that French wines are the best. They have a few of the more expensive wines that are good, but their wine is far more likely to give me a headache that wines from other countries which are more pure in my opinion. This has been the case with me for years. My choice of wines would be Italian or New Zealand wines.

NZ or Chile for me!😃

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 08-Jun-24 21:52:10

Italian wine never gives me a headache, however much I drink!🍸

Freshair Sat 08-Jun-24 22:46:30

The Americans didn't show their passports. Why was that then 😕

Freshair Sat 08-Jun-24 22:50:52

Obviously no other EU countries' soldiers needed to show their passports eg Belgium. Our guys should have refused, what would they have done then 🤔

Casdon Sat 08-Jun-24 22:58:54

Because they were in France already, they didn’t arrive over the channel on the day from the USA?

Freshair Sun 09-Jun-24 01:01:40

Casdon, I think you'll find that American troops arrived in Germany at a U.S. airbase prior to taking off to jump alongside the British troops. As they were coming from outside of France on the day of the jump, they should have been subject to the same rules.
