Even the Israeli army spokesman doesn't think it's possible to eliminate Hamas. So where does that lead Israel?

"Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari said "The idea of destroying Hamas is simply throwing sand in the eyes of the public…Hamas is an idea, Hamas is a political party…whoever thinks we can eliminate Hamas is mistaken," in an interview with Israel's Channel 13 News.

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman said the Prime Minister's Office asked him to hold off on a probe into its conduct surrounding Hamas' October 7 attack, after the High Court of Justice ordered Engelman to halt his probe into the IDF and Shin Bet. Engelman said that the office's request "is indicative of a mindset which I do not accept," adding that the Defense Minister's Office cooperated with his inquiries.

Taken from today's Haaretz. It would appear that more Israelis cannot support Netanyahu

Difficult decisions ahead for the Israeli people as regards being permanently at war at the current level.

Or exposed to repeats of 7th October 2023 . If it’s true

All eyes now turn to. Hezbollah.

A very different ball game.

Hamas will seem like a walk in the park in comparison.

I weep for the people of Israel

Destroying Hamas in Gaza is literally no more possible than destroying Nazism in Third Reich Germany was. Nazis survived in post war Germany, but they were rendered politically and militarily impotent. They were no longer in government, and had minimal access to offensive weaponry.

The same goals apply to Hamas in Gaza. Removed from government and unable to access state level weaponry. When those two aims are achieved Hamas will no longer present an existential threat to Israel, anymore than post war Nazis were an existential threat to European Jewry.

Literal destruction, ie the total eradication of Hamas, was never the aim.

"Literal destruction, ie the total eradication of Hamas, was never the aim."

That was the stated aim of Netanyahu and his government, repeated time and time again.

Nah!
It’s just rocket attacks as usual.Neither side wants to escalate.

Impossible to destroy All hamas.
The aim is to dismantle them as an ongoing operational group.
Seems to be working.

Probably a way of keeping the war going and a way to avoid an election so Netanyahu can avoid his corruption trials. However, many posters on threads have talked about eliminating Hamas as the objective so I'm just pointing out that even the spokesman for the IDF doesn't think this is possible which many of us have been saying since the this terrible war started.

Total destruction of the Nazis was the Allied aim in WW2. Using over literal interpretation of meaning, the Allies "failed" during WW2. However in actuality they succeeded. Likewise Israel's goal regarding Hamas.

If a boxer says in advance of a fight he's going to knock the other guy's head off in the ring and at the end of the fight his head is still attached, then according to your logic and understanding, the boxer failed, and by extension lost the fight (didn't achieve his stated aims).

Pooter I think that's a very poor comparison. Following the dreadful attack by Hamas Netanyahu vowed 1) the total annihilation of Hamas from the face of the earth and 2) Securing the release of all Israeli and foreign hostages, in that order. He has since October 2023 repeatedly said he will not consider a permanent ceasefire until he has achieved those aims. I agree with you that it was always been an impossible aim to eradicate Hamas however, achievable or not, that is what Netanyahu has repeatedly used to underpin his actions and those of the IDF. The point of my thread is to point out that his spokesman, Daniel Hagari, is no longer on board with Netanyahu which is being widely discussed in Israel. so the question remains, where does that lead/leave Netanyahu?

Terrorists cannot be eliminated because if just one has the means to cause damage he will, you can control them which is what happens in most countries, including the UK. Certainly all of Israel’s neighbours have terrorists fighting the government Israel is no different.

I note that the IDF has been classified as terrorists because of their behaviour.

The UN of course - no one else has the authority.

I’m not saying that I agree or disagree - although I am not surprised.

Please can you share a link or more information.

I think it matters a great deal to find out what Israelis want, and found this article in the Jerusalem Post useful in talking about the different factions and difficulties faced. It's not a left versus right as there are religious factors at work. People want to know what the government's end game plans are.

Hamas is in the mind, and Israel can bomb and intimidate all they like, but they cannot eradicate thought. The constant bombings and denial of the basics of human life and dignity are great recruitment for Hamas.

paddyann54 Thu 20-Jun-24 13:04:33

The Israel State has had the same plan since its inception. To rid Israel of Palestinian people, this so called war is just an escalation of their behaviour over 7 decades or more .Instead of terrorising, murdering land grabbing one family at a time they are destroying tens of thousands of innocent people. The world stands by and watches…as Netanyahu plays his game and makes sure Israel stays forever in minds the victim. The Israeli State is and has been a terrorist state for decades.Take off your blinkers and see the truth!

You don’t seem to get it, the idea is to stop hamas being an effective fighting force and later to make sure hamas have no role in Gaza.

The FT - that well known Hamas supporter.
