Even the Israeli army spokesman doesn't think it's possible to eliminate Hamas. So where does that lead Israel?

"Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari said "The idea of destroying Hamas is simply throwing sand in the eyes of the public…Hamas is an idea, Hamas is a political party…whoever thinks we can eliminate Hamas is mistaken," in an interview with Israel's Channel 13 News.

State Comptroller Matanyahu Englman said the Prime Minister's Office asked him to hold off on a probe into its conduct surrounding Hamas' October 7 attack, after the High Court of Justice ordered Engelman to halt his probe into the IDF and Shin Bet. Engelman said that the office's request "is indicative of a mindset which I do not accept," adding that the Defense Minister's Office cooperated with his inquiries.

Taken from today's Haaretz. It would appear that more Israelis cannot support Netanyahu

I think it's important to distinguish between Jews and Israelis - and even between those Israelis who support Netanyahu and those who don't.

This war has given antisemites another excuse to hound Jewish people.
I have never understood the hatred some have for Jews that has gone on for centuries and people call themselves civilised.

Yes, it's given them an excuse - and it's not only Arabs who are carrying out anti-semitic activities; many of them are far-right neo-Nazis. As you wrote, hatred of Jews has gone on for centuries. The war in Gaza has probably been a catalyst, but it (and Hamas) haven't been the only cause.

When Jewish people are afraid to walk the streets and are renewing their passports ready to escape you have to worry. That is happening in Melbourne. I think those marching people flying Palestinian flags and harassing our residents need to take a good hard look themselves.

Wyllow3 Thu 20-Jun-24 18:45:55

This is why I'm concerned that peace efforts are so hard to find and hope every time there is an initiative.

Innocents in both Israel and Palestine have suffered greatly.

The consequences have spread widely.

growstuff Jews in Israel and Jews in every country who feel hounded, attacked and scared of the huge uprising of those marches for Palestine and all that goes with that.
Synagogues attacked and daubed with swastikas, attacked in the street, and in Paris a 13 year old Jewish girl raped.

Regarding Hamas. I have never seen in all the threads about this war anyone supporting this terrorist group.

Thankfully neither have I, tho early on there were a few hostile comments, one was deleted for antisemitism.

Hamas is a terrorist group so I'm not at all surprised at anything they do it's what terrorists do. The IRA used to do bank raids and both they and I think the UDA were involved in criminal activity.

Hamas are doing it now, the bank raids, since early Spring while the war was going on all around them that’s all they thought about, maybe Iran wasn’t supplying all they needed.
Gazans with money still in the bank ( quite a lot) were told to pay a fee a week in advance then queue up.When they got there it was already being raided.
These are the people Palestinians want to join and fight with?
You also have to remember that over 1,000 Gazans, some already hamas and some happy to join in took part in the massacres in Israel, and after that, when a poll was taken, three quarters of Palestinians agreed it was a good thing to do.
Yet people here and in many countries were marching under pro Palestinian banners virtually straight after that.
If there was a poll taken in the UK then millions of their supporters would say the same.
That’s what Jews are up against.Think about it.

Jews or Israelis?

Oreo Thu 20-Jun-24 18:29:31

Yes foxie48 you have misinterpreted my post, I was just adding extra information for you, I know that you condemn hamas.

foxie48 Thu 20-Jun-24 18:26:24

Oreo I have made it very clear on a number of occasions that I do not in any way support Hamas yet your reply to my previous post seems to imply that you think I do. Have I misunderstood your post?

maddyone Thu 20-Jun-24 18:17:05

Thank you for the truth Oreo.
Hamas care nothing for the Palestinians and hate the Israelis.
The misery they have brought to both Gaza and Israel is huge.

Anniebach Thu 20-Jun-24 18:11:36

Oreo thank you, all the tales about Palestinians driven to join Hamas, not so

It's sad that more and more young Palestinians are joining Hamas to become "freedom fighters". While the war carries on Hamas is growing.
My DD used to tutor a Palestinian boy taking A levels. He told her he won't be able to go to university and was joining Hamas along with his friends.
I just feel like weeping for all the innocents who have perished in this terrible war.

There will not be a winner in this war, that’s for sure.

The problem as I see it is how to contain the conflict and stop it spreading across the Middle East, and even the eastern Mediterranean like I posted earlier Hizbollah are starting with not so veiled threats towards Cyprus.

Has anyone read about the big bank heists in Gaza? Hamas have now robbed millions from Palestinians there while the population scrabble to get banknotes for essential supplies their ‘masters’ rob their accounts at gunpoint.

Wouldn’t have expected anything less from Hamas.

They do not give a thought for Palestinians, never have and never will.

The FT - that well known Hamas supporter.

I have just looked at ft.com

I can only find a story on Hizbullah warning Israel about a war to end wars and threatening Cyprus.

Perhaps you could cut and paste this story, because I cannot find it anywhere else, and I would be interested to read it.

Impossible to destroy All hamas.
The aim is to dismantle them as an ongoing operational group.
Seems to be working.

Yes, this.
And recovery of the hostages.

Hamas is in the mind, and Israel can bomb and intimidate all they like, but they cannot eradicate thought. The constant bombings and denial of the basics of human life and dignity are great recruitment for Hamas.

Hamas are fighting for the basics of human life and dignity ,
really !

I weep for the people of Israel

I weep for the wretched people of all faiths and none caught up in this hideous situation.
