And the U.K. is so much the poorer for it, both economically and socially.

Those biscottes are yummy, Mollygo, so crunchy and buttery. Never seen them here, ever.

Available on Amazon.

Waitrose do a version but not that make, called Jacquet Toast Francais, might be worth a try.

They're really dry. The Heudebert ones are more crumbly with a raised surface, if you get what I mean?!

Callistemon213 Sun 30-Jun-24 09:38:22

Yes, I'd never heard of that make but had tried other versions which were okish.

Mollygo Sun 30-Jun-24 09:45:03

Thanks Callistemon213
I’ll try the Waitrose ones- they’re only £2 per packet but we don’t have one anywhere near us.
Tesco do a version too, though I’ve never seen them in our local Tesco.
It’s the £5.99 + £1 delivery that stops me buying them from Amazon.

"What Will Brexit Mean for Food in the UK?"
The "art installation" is from 2016.

Does the reality match the doom and gloom of the prediction?

Hmm, let me think.
No 😄

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-Jun-24 10:05:37

As a metaphor I think it speaks to exactly what as happened.

Compare our living standard to people in Europe

Compare growth in our economy to Europe

Compare our health service to Europe

Compare our local infrastructure to Europe.

That is why I think Starmer will bring closer working asap - he has to in order to bring the growth we so very badly need.

But I am optimistic that it will happen.

Oreo Sun 30-Jun-24 10:08:15

Europe’s a big place, and we’re in it.😄

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-Jun-24 10:10:37

Sorry?

Oreo Sun 30-Jun-24 10:16:31

I think you’re confusing EU countries with Europe.
The UK is in Europe.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-Jun-24 10:21:11

😄😄😄

Oreo Sun 30-Jun-24 10:29:03

The installation may have been on display in NY but you fail to see the artist if we may be so bold as to call him/her that, isn’t using US foods, but has grouped together foods from EU countries on one side, and beans on the other from Messrs Heinz. How so Brexit?
On your last post detailing Europe, is this meant to be ‘your’ thoughts or those of the installation artist? Nothing is clear.
If your own thoughts then plainly wrong, if the artist’s then also plainly wrong.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-Jun-24 10:42:53

Oh.

Anything else that’s annoying you?

Oreo Sun 30-Jun-24 10:46:56

I’ll have a think and get back to you😂
Seriously tho I just like posts to be clear in meaning.

But different people take such different meanings from posts that it's rather hard to please everyone.

I still can't get over baked beans being 'snobbish' grin

MaizieD Sun 30-Jun-24 10:58:38

We've had the 'I buy British' thing before.

Britain imports at least 40% of it's food. It hasn't been self sufficient in food since the 19th C. Someone must be buying not British food...

Callistemon213 Sun 30-Jun-24 10:59:55

Beanz meanz Waitrose anyway.

Not me 😇

(I lied)

Whitewavemark2 Sun 30-Jun-24 11:16:39

A lot of our fresh food is from Europe.

I do try to support British producers but it is more difficult at times.

And I love French Cheese and various imported cooked meats etc.

What I love is choice.

If posts are clear in meaning then nobody would be able to take different meanings from it.🤷🏼‍♀️
Baked beans are viewed by many to be low class, chavvy and so on.
I haven’t tried the Waitrose ones Callistemon213 bound to be a cut above aren’t they?😄
I love choices too Whitewavemark2 and looking around our shops supermarkets and markets find plenty of it.

David49 Sun 30-Jun-24 21:03:56

We all buy Bananas, Oranges and other fruit you can’t grow in UK, that aside if you eat seasonal food there is always a wide variety of British food available. This year we will be importing a lot of wheat for bread because wet weather restricted planting of the UK crop.

This is news to me, I have never heard or read anything to suggest that baked beans are 'chavvy'. I shop in Waitrose, it is my nearest supermarket and as far as i can taste their beans taste no different to anyone elses. Cheap beans usually have more sauce and fewer beans - but some people prefer that.

A lot of our wheat comes into this country from north Ameica, especially Canada. The importation of this wheat, which undercut the price of British grown wheat caused the recession in the farming industry that ran from 1870 to 1940.

Increases in yields mean we now import only 20% of the wheat we consume, but we import about 40% of our animal feed.

Joseann Mon 01-Jul-24 08:59:26

I've never thought of baked beans as chavy, but some might. They certainly aren't haute cuisine ingredients.
I don't think football is chavy either, but others might! wink

Cheaper than Heinz and nicer too Oreo!

DH does like Heinz though. Especially with sausage and mash (British pork, British potatoes of course).

We're just Chavs at heart.

maddyone Mon 01-Jul-24 10:26:10

I prefer Heinz baked beans. I sometimes have some with toast for a quick lunch.

Our Waitrose closed, just after Covid. I miss it. I have to shop in either Sainsburys or M+S now, or go a bit further afield to Lidl. Occasionally I go to Waitrose but it’s about 20 minutes in the car now as opposed to 3 minutes in the car.

My post was nothing to do with the EU. We seem to have moved away from the thread title.

With regard to the EU, I don’t know who all these people are who are having a problem taking ages to enter the EU. We went to Seville a few weeks ago. We walked straight in and up to the immigration desk. Quick look at the passport and he gave us a stamp. We were outside. all four of us in minutes. The same when we went to Paris in April. It always takes a bit longer to get back into Britain, but it doesn’t take very long at the electronic gates.

Callistemon213 Mon 01-Jul-24 10:48:12

We're getting hung up on baked beans 😁

It's a metaphor with a deep meaning.
