Sadiq Khan has banned black cabs in London from flying the England flag during the Euros’s

He sites causing a distraction

Funny that he doesn’t have a problem with all the cars flying Palestinian flags in support of Gaza?

vegansrock Mon 24-Jun-24 20:36:14

freya5 you’re forgetting the worse mayor - one B Johnson - well done you.

Casdon Mon 24-Jun-24 20:34:12

As black cabs are not permitted to have any flags or stickers, and haven’t been for years, I’m beginning to wonder if we are in a parallel universe here. If you see any cab with any flag or sticker, report it. Job done.

Just remembering the blimp (balloon) of Khan in a bikini flying over London in 2018. 🤣🤣

Can we get that out again. This man must be the most divisive mayor the people of London have ever voted for. Well done all of you.

Glorianny I was wondering though if you were an Arab or Muslim woman would you feel safe getting into a taxi flying the England flag? Or would you be worried about the driver?

.... and vice versa?

In the same note I wouldn't be happy riding in a cab flying a Palestinian flag. How's that ?

Do we expect an apology from those of you churning out rubbish? Please read Siope's posts.

Aaah just read the entire post, that’ll teach me, need to get little flags.

Cossy Mon 24-Jun-24 18:50:03

I agree, it’s utterly ridiculous and pointless and quite divisive!!

It is public transport. So buses, trains and taxis have rules to which they have to adhere.

Taxis have always flown flags the England flag during rugby 6 nations, football tournaments and of course the union flag during the 2012 Olympics.

I was in London yesterday, I saw taxi’s flying the Pride flag.

Taxi’s are able to have advertising all over their paintwork, just as busses and trains have advertising on them.

Not sure your point holds up.

It’s Khan isn’t it? It’s what I would expect of the man.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Jun-24 18:46:23

So, after all this fuss, we find its regulations.

Definitely all or none of course.

Nandalot Mon 24-Jun-24 18:18:35

GrannyGravy13, if a London black cab was flying a Palestinian flag, that would be against the rules too. TFL has stated:
“Any other signage or flags are not permitted because they could cause a distraction to other drivers and road users. These guidelines apply to all flags and signage. We expect all taxi and private hire operators and drivers to comply.”

vegansrock Mon 24-Jun-24 18:16:53

grannygravy how can you claim you aren’t bashing Khan? Look at the title of your thread.

vegansrock Mon 24-Jun-24 18:15:34

Yes it’s been a rule for ages, not something thought up by Sadiq Khan, but it won’t stop some people bashing him for anything they don’t like.

Siope Mon 24-Jun-24 18:12:59

Moaned, not loaned.

Siope Mon 24-Jun-24 18:12:07

It is simple. None in TfL licensed vehicles. As decided 20 years ago, reinforced by Johnson, and loaned anout by some folk every Euros and World Cup.

vegansrock Mon 24-Jun-24 18:11:53

Seems fair enough, black cabs are part of the public transport system. They aren’t allowed to fly flags or banners or anything that could hamper the safety of passengers and pedestrians. Would we want bus drivers flying whatever banner they want from their bus? Same rules apply. An advert on the side isn’t the same as something flapping about. Flags fixed on can be blown or fall off into traffic behind.

Galaxy Mon 24-Jun-24 18:06:34

Either all or none its fairly simple surely.

Methinks someone just wants to have a bash at Sadiq Khan.

Not at all, I am a Londoner, born and bred, I no longer live in London and unable to vote in the Mayoral elections. He has been elected fair and square.

DH and I were in central London yesterday (Green Park), he noticed the pride flag and several Palestinian ones. They had even started hanging the Japanese flag on the flag poles along the Mall and by Buckingham Palace in readiness for the visit of the Japanese Emperor tomorrow.

Our conversation with the cab driver on the way back to the station was educational, he felt it wrong that the English flag could not be flown during the football.

Iam64 Mon 24-Jun-24 17:48:22

Kill joy
And yes it does feel plain wrong. All over Europe people will be flying their countries flag because of the footie
Suggesting Muslim women may feel unsafe in the England flag is flow is offensive as well you know Glory

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Jun-24 17:43:00

Tough.

TfL bans all flags and badges.

I was wondering though if you were an Arab or Muslim woman would you feel safe getting into a taxi flying the England flag? Or would you be worried about the driver?

Why would anyone Muslim or otherwise be worried about getting in a cab which was sporting the flag of the Country you live in?

Or are you implying that anyone flying the English flag is a far right thug, Tommy Robinson supporter which in itself is prejudice on your part.

On another thread some people are posting about how unsafe they feel in taxis. I simply wondered if some muslim women might see the flag as something that made them feel less safe. I don't think all taxi drivers are dangerous nor do I think all that fly the flag are far right thugs, but undoubtedly some people don't feel safe in a taxi alone.

TerriBull Mon 24-Jun-24 14:55:58

Given Regent Street is decked out with Pride flags as if an occupying force has taken over, and as you pointed out GG you saw a black cab flying a Pride flag, it seems somewhat discriminatory and I'm not a football supporter. I do think supporters whatever their nationality understandbly wish to show support for their team by flying their respective flags. A question because I have no idea, do other European countries take this stance during The Euros?

Siope Mon 24-Jun-24 14:51:14

Oh, and it’s a road safety measure (implemented in many other parts of the country) and sod all to do with race, religion or whatever other nonsense some people will claim to cast blame on folk who aren’t like them.
