Sadiq Khan has banned black cabs in London from flying the England flag during the Euros’s

He sites causing a distraction

Funny that he doesn’t have a problem with all the cars flying Palestinian flags in support of Gaza?

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Jun-24 13:56:23

How ridiculous.

LauraNorderr Mon 24-Jun-24 14:00:57

Can’t wait to see the first one arrested, the first one prosecuted, go on black cab drivers put this numpty to the test.
Fly our flag with pride and optimism, we just might bring home a trophy.

Namsnanny Mon 24-Jun-24 14:02:09

Two Tier Taxi's?🤣

nanna8 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:06:39

How dreadful. That is the national flag, what’s wrong with him ? How come someone with his views gets to be a mayor ? London ain’t what it used to be.

Rockyroad Mon 24-Jun-24 14:13:53

Unbelievable. The man is a total moron.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:17:58

It is public transport. So buses, trains and taxis have rules to which they have to adhere.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:20:43

As a leftie I think it's silly as long as the flag is of safe modest size and on footie days. However, as in pic, it is visually dangerous when large.

Taxis have always flown flags the England flag during rugby 6 nations, football tournaments and of course the union flag during the 2012 Olympics.

I was in London yesterday, I saw taxi’s flying the Pride flag.

Taxi’s are able to have advertising all over their paintwork, just as busses and trains have advertising on them.

Not sure your point holds up.

vegansrock Mon 24-Jun-24 14:25:18

Well with the state of the football team they won’t be flying it much longer. Hardly worth getting the knickers in a twist over. It’s got to be the same rule for all. Taxis weren’t flying the Palestinian flag btw, and if they were it would be against the regulations.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:30:08

The O/P is flawed: it tries to conflate the taxi rules with Palestinian flags, but Taxis cannot do this.

Private cars can fly flags as per usual and I'm sure we'll see plenty out on footie days.

storm in teacup.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:36:28

Wyllow3 some taxis, Ubers and black cabs have regularly flown the Palestinian flag in support of Gaza.

They regularly fly the pride flag during Pride Month.

Why has Mr.Khan singled out the England flag?

Glorianny Mon 24-Jun-24 14:39:12

TfL bans all flags and badges.

I was wondering though if you were an Arab or Muslim woman would you feel safe getting into a taxi flying the England flag? Or would you be worried about the driver?

Why would anyone Muslim or otherwise be worried about getting in a cab which was sporting the flag of the Country you live in?

Or are you implying that anyone flying the English flag is a far right thug, Tommy Robinson supporter which in itself is prejudice on your part.

Wyllow3 Mon 24-Jun-24 14:45:33

Don't know, GG13.

I don't know the rules and regs on black cabs.

Nothing new under the sun, however, there was a similar kerfuffle in 1999.

www.theguardian.com/football/1999/oct/18/newsstory.sport10

when

"A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "It is not a case of targeting the flag of St George. Unauthorised stickers are not allowed."

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Jun-24 14:47:54

I would be more concerned if I were Jewish and the cab was displaying the Palestinian flag. Why would an Arab or Moslem woman feel unsafe with an England flag flying? Might they think the driver was a crusader? 🙄

Siope Mon 24-Jun-24 14:49:21

This has been the case since at least 2012. I think some blonde haired muppet called Johnson was the Mayor at the time.

Siope Mon 24-Jun-24 14:51:14

Oh, and it’s a road safety measure (implemented in many other parts of the country) and sod all to do with race, religion or whatever other nonsense some people will claim to cast blame on folk who aren’t like them.

TerriBull Mon 24-Jun-24 14:55:58

Given Regent Street is decked out with Pride flags as if an occupying force has taken over, and as you pointed out GG you saw a black cab flying a Pride flag, it seems somewhat discriminatory and I'm not a football supporter. I do think supporters whatever their nationality understandbly wish to show support for their team by flying their respective flags. A question because I have no idea, do other European countries take this stance during The Euros?

On another thread some people are posting about how unsafe they feel in taxis. I simply wondered if some muslim women might see the flag as something that made them feel less safe. I don't think all taxi drivers are dangerous nor do I think all that fly the flag are far right thugs, but undoubtedly some people don't feel safe in a taxi alone.

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 24-Jun-24 17:43:00

Tough.

Iam64 Mon 24-Jun-24 17:48:22

Kill joy
And yes it does feel plain wrong. All over Europe people will be flying their countries flag because of the footie
Suggesting Muslim women may feel unsafe in the England flag is flow is offensive as well you know Glory

Not at all, I am a Londoner, born and bred, I no longer live in London and unable to vote in the Mayoral elections. He has been elected fair and square.

DH and I were in central London yesterday (Green Park), he noticed the pride flag and several Palestinian ones. They had even started hanging the Japanese flag on the flag poles along the Mall and by Buckingham Palace in readiness for the visit of the Japanese Emperor tomorrow.

Our conversation with the cab driver on the way back to the station was educational, he felt it wrong that the English flag could not be flown during the football.

Galaxy Mon 24-Jun-24 18:06:34

Either all or none its fairly simple surely.
