About time, too. He has been in jail much longer than he should have been. He exposed some of the atrocities going on in the Middle East , things that the US didn’t want anyone to know about.

We have a double extradition treaty with the US. Do we not want them to extradite criminals wanted for trial here?

People seem to have forgotten about the Swedish sex crimes allegations which were dropped largely because "the many years passed had weakened evidence".

I certainly haven’t forgotten.

The UK and the USA have a symbiotic relationship. Always have. They don’t like it when war crimes are exposed.

Australia needs to be careful not to upset the USA. They may need them one day.

Your PM is an idiot on so many levels.

The whole Swedish crime episode was so convoluted and complicated it was unlikely to ever be properly investigated or the truth discovered. There were various offers made for the Swedish authorities to come to the UK and interview him in the embassy. They never did asking instead for extradition. It is a pity it was never tried in a court of law, but the idea that this was just a way of getting Assange extradited to the US can't be ignored.

We do but they are very reluctant to comply when one of their own kills someone. As in the case of Harry Dunn killed by Anne Sacolas who was never sent back to stand trial in the UK

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 26-Jun-24 16:21:33

As I recall, she claimed diplomatic immunity.

That was exactly what I was thinking, deluded and .fools to themselves. Just wait until australia is over run, they will not get help from the USA, no matter how much they winge. Shot themselves in the foot

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 26-Jun-24 17:25:00

I agree. Upsetting the US is a bad move.

Australia already leases islands and a port to the Chinese.
Natives of at least one island have been faced by Keep Out signs.

I agree with you on this Glorianny.
If he had been sent to Sweden he would have immediately found himself in America.
They wouldn't come here, wouldn't do a video interview or accept any other accommodation.

This is entirely about squashing the press (and by accepting one charge I think the damage has been done).

She tried to but she wasn't om the list. She and her husband live close to the CIA centre in the US.
She has admitted driving on the wrong side of the road and killing Harry, but she wouldn't attend the court hearing in the UK.

£400,000 for his flight home. Who paid for that?

knspol Sun 30-Jun-24 14:50:52

He apparently disclosed film of US soldiers killing civilians surely that sort of action is in the public interest? I don't know what else he disclosed that may not have been in the public interest and probably none of us do. Interesting that the US were happy for him to be released.

I wasn't aware Australia was having elections too 🤔

Are you, nanna8?
I'm sure I'd have heard a lot from DD if you were!!

The clue is in the name Wiki LEAKS - I thought he'd help legit whistleblowers but he went SO much beyond that. Cost lives. Selfish man.

Because he believes in freedom of speech.

Because the USA believes in the 1st Amendment.

Because I believe in the freedom of speech, and believe that journalists are one of the bastions of this freedom.

Because I believe that Trump who said that the 1st amendment should only cover USA journalists was wrong particularly when it relates to the way the USA government behaved.

Because I believe that it is more important than ever that the worlds population is protected from rogue governments.

Just this

I think it was Callistemon who made a remark about PM, and she was talking about the Australian one.

Apologies if I have misunderstood,

No elections in Oz.

Yes, Assange has gone back to Australia and nanna8 lives in Australia. No elections there.

Such wonderful news!

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 30-Jun-24 18:46:37

What? Why?

NotSpaghetti Sun 30-Jun-24 18:48:16

sandelf - the government said " cost lives" but would not verify that to the media. I don't expect them to give away confidential information but there has never been any evidence of that - there is however quite a lot of evidence of serious wrongdoing by the forces. They should be brought to justice.

nanna8 Mon 01-Jul-24 09:17:01

No - we are not due for another election for some time. The Liberals haven’t got a cat in hell’s chance, though. There is no decent opposition. I think we have a very, very poor government but compared with our State government they are reasonable. Assange has been welcomed back by our PM.
The comments about USA and Australia are a bit weird considering the US has military bases here and has had for many years. I don’t believe China has any here ( yet), they just own a lot of the land and businesses. There is a very close relationship between the US and Australia .
