The UK and the USA have a symbiotic relationship. Always have. They don’t like it when war crimes are exposed.

Pleased he is out. He is being held responsible for a lot of things by some posters. He leaked information about the US which the public had a right to know.

If it has cost us a lot it is entirely our own fault. He could have been sent back to Australia at any point. Unfortunately we are far too beholden to the US to say "No" to them.

Awful narcissistic man. Glad he’s gone back to where he came from.

NotSpaghetti Wed 26-Jun-24 13:30:07

He should not have been forced to accept any charges.
It does not bode well for the future of the press.

Not a single individual came to harm as a result of what Assange published.

That fact was established in court.

Assange published Hillary Clinton's emails which had been hacked by the Kremlin in order to help Trump get elected in 2016.

The whole of the USA came to harm as a result.

I listened to an Ex Army veteran yesterday. " Assange is not a hero, the hero's are lying dead in Afghanistan and Iraq".
What Assange and that other numpty, who let's face it took the fall for Assange, did , may well have helped the Taliban and Al Nusra achieve this. Wonder how many of you feel as outraged at those deaths, deliberate killings on camp by supposed friendly Afghans and Iraqi.
Assange is a coward, and Australia is most welcome to him.

Obviously the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and dozens of press freedom, human rights, and privacy rights organizations would support him because nothing matters to them but the story. Many people working legitimately for the defence of the USA were put at risk by his indiscriminate actions.

Because he believes in freedom of speech.

Because the USA believes in the 1st Amendment.

Because I believe in the freedom of speech, and believe that journalists are one of the bastions of this freedom.

Because I believe that Trump who said that the 1st amendment should only cover USA journalists was wrong particularly when it relates to the way the USA government behaved.

Because I believe that it is more important than ever that the worlds population is protected from rogue governments.

Me too karmalady. I really don’t understand why he’s being treated like a superhero rather than the treacherous coward who released secrets to the world and threatened national security, then hid for years from the consequences. Not so long ago people were executed for that, and still would be in many countries.

karmalady Wed 26-Jun-24 12:33:07

Australia is welcome to him. Reminds me of the convict transportation from 1788

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 26-Jun-24 12:28:22

It was a pretence, that’s obvious. And he was seeing his wife and children.

I’m not glad. What he did was, in my book, treacherous. Amazing that he now longer appears frail and immobile as he pretended to be when fighting extradition.

It’s amazing what good news, a smart suit and the knowledge that you will be seeing your family soon can do to someone.

nanna8 Wed 26-Jun-24 11:38:34

I am absolutely certain he won’t want to go back to the UK so no need to worry on that score !

Wyllow3 Wed 26-Jun-24 11:38:04

Yes, time for his release.

Sarnia Wed 26-Jun-24 11:34:58

A drain on our finances we can well do without. Let him go back to Oz and carry on attention seeking from there.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and dozens of press freedom, human rights, and privacy rights organizations across the world support Assange and reporters freedom to investigate and report wrongs carried out by governments.

So Assange published footage of USA military killing unarmed civilians in Iraq, amongst other things that enraged the USA .

Much the same is happening in Gaza and the West Bank, but this time people have mobile phones that can be whizzed around the world, so identifying a “spy” is much harder. And of course the suppression of what is taking place by refusing to allow reporters into Gaza is one way a government tries to prevent this type of behaviour being made known to the world.

Depends whether you support the freedom of the press. You obviously hear a totally different side from the one we get here. He is seen as a bit of a hero, our government was very keen to see him released. Your press is very different. Interesting. I neither support or despise him because the two views are so radically different it is very hard to know the reality. I do think he served his time, though.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 26-Jun-24 11:02:36

👍🏻

karmalady Wed 26-Jun-24 11:00:34

Slimey traitor

The upside is that we no longer have to pay for him

I’m glad he’s out at last.

eazybee Wed 26-Jun-24 10:27:37

I just hope he never returns to this country.

keepingquiet Wed 26-Jun-24 10:24:28

I am glad he's out and hopefully will get on with his life. I can't help thinking if he had bargained from the beginning he would have been out years ago.

nanna8 Wed 26-Jun-24 09:04:09

About time, too. He has been in jail much longer than he should have been. He exposed some of the atrocities going on in the Middle East , things that the US didn’t want anyone to know about.
