That’s the question audience member Robert Blackstock asked Sunak and Starmer at last night’s leadership debate. Is this a helpful question?

I think he simply articulated what a lot of us, mere mortals, are thinking.
It may not have elevated the debate but it was not much of a debate.
Political debate seems to consist of name calling and shouting over each other.
Nobody... NOBODY.. seems able to present policies or explain how they will be financed or rolled out.

Could be worse. We could live in the States.

not much of a debate
Huge gulfs between the various parties. Manifesto from each.

TakeThat7 Mon 01-Jul-24 20:00:46

Yes as above help with higher fuel bills not something im confident Labour will do but if they do thats good

TakeThat7 Mon 01-Jul-24 20:10:30

I think the politicians should ask the non poloticians what they would like to see get some questionares out for the public wish lists But then they have another job apart from mp on the whole so prob not got time Great no bbc licence fee from nigel farage for once he has hit on something the public want changing There os no sence people paying to watch bbc a lot never even watch Why should you pay for something you never use

I don’t think Sunak was dire, but I thought Starmer was.

Both could send a glass eye to sleep 😴

Rekarie Mon 01-Jul-24 20:29:38

It was rather rude. Unnecessary. However I'm not keen on either of them. Not keen on any of them. Still no idea who I'll be voting for.

That’s not funny. Do you know someone who has a glass eye?

Feel I've heard enough of both by now.

Ludicrous attack on Starmer by Sunak because he always takes Friday evenings off for family time after 6pm.

www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/02/tory-attacks-keir-starmer-work-hours-disgrace-labour

(Starmer does like others work weekends)

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jul-24 14:09:17

I don’t know how he will be able to manage that. He doesn’t seem to realise the hours that need to be put in.

Mamardoit Tue 02-Jul-24 14:27:41

I do have some sympathy with the man who asked the question. Nearly everyone I know think RS and KS are really not up to the tasks facing the UK. The Liberal leader is a clown.

I have no idea who to vote for. I spoilt my ballot at the last GE and will probably do the same again. Looks like we will get a Tory MP anyway. It is a very safe seat.

Mamardoit Tue 02-Jul-24 14:28:09

Sorry Lib Dem leader.

Joseann Tue 02-Jul-24 14:28:59

Saying you take Friday evenings off with family doesn't mean you're not actually working, even in your own head! He probably just meant no meetings, no functions, just staying at home, (on his laptop while the rest watch tv in the same room).

Joseann Tue 02-Jul-24 14:30:09

I don't think that as PM you would ever mentally switch off, wherever you are.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jul-24 14:31:23

So he will have to turn down a function from which he can’t return home by 6? That will soon cause considerable irritation - putting his wife ahead of the country. It isn’t going to work.

Joseann Tue 02-Jul-24 14:46:55

Well, King Charles had better get the business meeting done and dusted by mid afternoon on Friday, July 5th then. It's a good hour from the Palace out to Kentish Town in the rush hour, even longer on a Friday.

Of course there will be some functions where he has to break his Friday's, in a crisis/COBRA meeting or some international event.

He means in the normal run of work, and I would have thought that family values would come high and be viewed with respect, on most voter's lists. One evening a week, for goodness sake!

Wyllow3 Tue 02-Jul-24 15:03:16

Sunak sends his children to boarding school. They aren't at home in the evening for family time. Starmer's children go to State Schools and live at home. Friday nights must be very special for them -and good for them.

Did you have the same response to Theresa May keeping her diary free on Sunday mornings so she could attend church?

Keeping Shabbat, whenever possible, is presumably equally important (and manageable) for Starmer.

Pleased to see Bloomberg reporting that the the U.K. is going to be very attractive to investors if the Labour party becomes the next government,

Apparently its policies are very attractive to investors, which is exactly what I think Reeves is hoping.

Growth

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jul-24 15:30:12

That’s a little different Siope. Friday is a weekday when meetings anywhere in the country might be held. Sunday is not.

But Downing Street (which is where he’d be going if he’s in a position to attend that meeting) is fortunately much closer!

In political circles, speaking as the sister of a senior government adviser (hopefully only for a few more days), Sunday most definitely is a working day.

I think we can trust Starmer to manage his time and diary without wrecking the country.

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 02-Jul-24 15:44:36

I didn’t say Sunday wasn’t a working day, if you read my post again.

How will he cope with G7/20 meetings, especially in foreign countries?

Desperation has set in.
