Heaven help America….and the rest of us. My partner said when he was elected before that he was planning to start a dynasty. Is he also planning to destroy democracy, too?

winterwhite Tue 02-Jul-24 08:13:43

Who determines what is ‘official’? The president himself I daresay.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 02-Jul-24 08:19:38

I saw that - but I do need to read more to try to understand the implication of the ruling.

People in USA are saying that he will have the power of a king - not sure what that means - dictator?

I was sort of hoping for a break after our election but it seems now there is something else to worry about.

What with that and France!

The U.K. will be a bastion of calm and common sense.

Grantanow Tue 02-Jul-24 08:31:52

It's the courts which will decide what is official or not.

winterwhite Tue 02-Jul-24 08:33:01

One crucial thing will be whether ‘official’ is stretched to include denial of the 2020 election results - all those lies and bribes.

Farzanah Tue 02-Jul-24 09:22:52

Thank God the U.K. judiciary is independent. I fear for democracy in USA.

Sarnia Tue 02-Jul-24 09:24:16

Teflon Trump.

Farzanah Tue 02-Jul-24 09:51:25

It’s not just Trump, it’s the system.

GrannyGravy13 Tue 02-Jul-24 09:55:18

There was a reason POTUS Trump ensured that the judiciary was 6 - 3 in his parties favour.

(Six were elected by Republican President, three by a Democratic President )

AGAA4 Tue 02-Jul-24 09:55:21

Biden was right to say that the law was for all and that includes presidents.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-24 10:02:19

Now they need to decide which things he did as part of his presidency, i.e. "official acts".

I think this has been known for ages - but now has been "proven" by the courts.

AGAA4 Tue 02-Jul-24 10:06:51

This won't be settled before the elections in November which means Trump won't be going to court for any of his crimes before then.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 02-Jul-24 10:13:15

If this was a film you would consider it either a comedy or absolute rubbish. Or both! However, it’s fact and terrifying.Apparently he will be sentenced for something else next week.

Just so.

To me the attempts to make officials in Georgia alter the numbers of his votes was the most heinous of his crimes, since the evidence is so clear. The recorded phone call.

"I just want 11,780 votes': Trump pressed Georgia to overturn Biden victory"

"Trump asked secretary of state to recalculate vote in phone call

In an hour-long phone call on Saturday, Donald Trump pressed Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to overturn Joe Biden’s victory there in the election the president refuses to concede."

(Guardian from that time)

So what happens next, I dont understand.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-24 11:09:41

Yes. But it will likely be after November, apparently.

Callistemon213 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:14:15

Well, looking at our Constitutional Monarchy, that would mean a lot less than any preceding President!!

Do people in the USA understand the Monarchies in Europe? Or realise some even have a Queen as Head of State?

Whitewavemark2 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:15:01

So what happens if a President, officially ordered the assassination of an opponent.

MaizieD Tue 02-Jul-24 11:16:45

Many Americans adored our late Queen. 😆

But I'm not sure how firm a grasp most of them have on the workings of a constitution.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-24 11:18:01

Callistemon213 - they mean an old-style monarch.
Not our sort - which is different.

cookiemonster66 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:20:22

I worry for the safety of the entire planet if this guy comes into power again. Cannot believe Americans want a misogynistic, narcissistic psychopath for a president.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Jul-24 11:22:01

Does anyone else listen to the Meidas Touch podcast?

This is the recent one which talks about this ruling (and other stuff).

I couldn't face more than 10 mins as I heard Trump's tweets over the weekend.

but it did strike me that the attempt to alter the result of the elections in Georgia were not part of his official capacity as a president!

Moggycuddler Tue 02-Jul-24 11:27:27

The situation with Trump is terrifying. I suspect it's too late for America to wake up now.

Yes and what about Jan 6th?

And please can someone answer if as President in his official capacity he orders the assassination of his opponent - what happens?

Wyllow3 Tue 02-Jul-24 11:57:31

I agree Jan 6th was heinous, but harder to prove, whereas in Georgia he commits the crime in his recorded own words.
