Newsnight last night a focus group bod “more in common” said that the word most used when asked to describe the U.K. it was

BROKEN

What is yours?

Mine would be broken.

Sarnia Wed 03-Jul-24 08:00:30

Many people have used Broken during this campaign. I would use disintegrating for obvious reasons.

I no longer consider myself part of a UK. My country (Scotland) in the main part, voted to stay in Europe and were taken out against our wishes. Conservatives haven't been in power here for decades but we had to watch while horrible decisions were made which affected us. I wasn't a Scottish national voter. I voted to stay part of the union in the referendum, however the poor decisions and corrupt behaviour have made me change my mind. I'm not alone, I'm sure. There is no UK any more.

LizzieDrip Wed 03-Jul-24 08:02:17

Sadly mine would be dividedsad

Grandmabatty Wed 03-Jul-24 08:03:17

And I'm aware that some will come on here to put down SNP. I know they aren't perfect. However their worst is nothing compared to this shower of rogues in Westminster.

NotSpaghetti Wed 03-Jul-24 08:04:10

Divided was the word that came immediately to my mind too Lizzy

I agree with the above, but it would be a bit weird if we weren't, as the whole of the Western world is like that.

nanna8 Wed 03-Jul-24 08:10:07

Intense ( at the moment,anyway)

LizzieDrip Wed 03-Jul-24 08:10:44

Grandmabatty I totally understand how you feel. I have relatives in Scotland and they feel the same.

I’m in England and I feel angry at having left the EU but I often feel that, if I was Scottish, I would be even more furious as leaving was against your democratic will.

I do love Scotland thoughflowers

My negative side says "Polarised" but my positive side says "Hopeful".

Wonderful!

Never forget that for all its faults, the UK is so much better than most other countries despite all its problems and difficulties.

Teetering! That's how I perceive much of the democratic world, I reserve judgement as to how the country will fare under a new government, I'm not overly optimistic as I was when Labour swept to power in 1997, this feels more of a change by default.

Certainly divided would be my choice. It will take many more years to undo the damage of the decisions made by the Tory party in the effort to ward off the competition from UKIP/Reform. Fruitless efforts at that.
Like Grandmabatty I have not felt that I am part of the UK since the last referendum.

The UK may still be a good place to live, grandMattie.. but it's not the happiest!
Not according to the 2024 William Russell happiness report. This considers lots of evidence such as perceptions of the environment, friendliness, safety, and inclusion.

Here's the list of the top 20 in order:

Finland
Denmark
Iceland
Sweden
Israel
Netherlands
Norway
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Australia
New Zealand
Costa Rica
Kuwait
Austria
Canada
Belgium
Ireland
Czechia
Lithuania
United Kingdom

I second that. Living in the Netherlands was wonderful. The Dutch seem to have got their work/life balance much better than over here and they are intensely patriotic - they never run their country down as we do. I often wish I had been born Dutch.

I never run it down, nor do I have any desire to wave a flag and big it up.

Its slightly embarassing the way we've ended up.
