Newsnight last night a focus group bod “more in common” said that the word most used when asked to describe the U.K. it was

BROKEN

What is yours?

Mine would be broken.

I was born in 1943. Very glad I was not born Dutch!! In Europe, the UK was the only relatively safe place to be born, and I'm eternally grateful for that.

Closely followed by the world and the universe.😄

As I used to write in my books as part of my address before the EEC or EU existed.

Oreo Wed 03-Jul-24 12:02:02

You can say it annodomini cos it’s true! We are European.

annodomini Wed 03-Jul-24 11:55:48

What I would really like to have said and just to put a cat among the pigeons I'll say it:
European.

I see this was reported in 2024 but the data was collected earlier.

NotSpaghetti Wed 03-Jul-24 11:51:14

Here is the longer list from here:

worldhappiness.report/ed/2024/happiness-of-the-younger-the-older-and-those-in-between/

This is quite a full paper if anyone is interested.

I think the image (list) may be a bit small?

Politically - disillusioned and disappointed

Life in general - Lucky and safe (compared with many other countries)

Australia may come way above the UK on the list but many Australians I know like a good whinge about their country and how it is run!!

Absolutely 👍

We have one of our Aussie contingent here at the moment, not a happy Koala when it comes to Government, Health Service etc.

DD was happy about access to her GP in Australia and astonished that we now have to wait about a month just for a phone call from a GP! Mind you, health is devolved and we are in Wales.
Six to eight weeks for a face-to-face appointment.

I’m happy about my country and fellow countrymen and way of life but the government- NO. We haven’t had a good PM for years here in Australia, they just seem to get worse and worse. All sides, “left” and “right”.

Don't get me wrong, I love your country but I know how the Australians like to moan about their political leaders (and who can blame them!).

Siope Wed 03-Jul-24 11:34:49

I’d go with damaged.

HousePlantQueen Wed 03-Jul-24 11:30:13

Like many on here, I recognise that we have much to be thankful for compared to some, but my word for the UK at the moment would be EXHAUSTED. Nothing is easy or straightforward, and sadly, this is due to decisions made by government. I see this as being a direct result of Cameron and Osborne and their programme of austerity, we have neve recovered from it.

henetha Wed 03-Jul-24 11:28:10

Thanks 🙏👍 Oreo and others who agree ....this is a wonderful country.

Grantanow Wed 03-Jul-24 11:26:46

Non-delivering. I'm thinking about all the public services which have been run down by the Tories.

The UK may still be a good place to live, grandMattie.. but it's not the happiest!
Not according to the 2024 William Russell happiness report. This considers lots of evidence such as perceptions of the environment, friendliness, safety, and inclusion.

Here's the list of the top 20 in order:

Finland
Denmark
Iceland
Sweden
Israel
Netherlands
Norway
Luxembourg
Switzerland
Australia
New Zealand
Costa Rica
Kuwait
Austria
Canada
Belgium
Ireland
Czechia
Lithuania
United Kingdom

I believe this load of twaddle report is produced by
"a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the WHR’s Editorial Board. The report is produced under the editorial control of the WHR Editorial Board"

William Russell (an insurance company) purely quoted it.

Yes. Where's France, Spain, Italy, Germany on the list then?

Wonderful This is a wonderful country and nothing will persuade me otherwise. Not perfect of course. But still absolutely wonderful.
Not the government though. We badly need a change of government and that will happen tomorrow I think.

I agree 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Me too! This is a wonderful country.

My word would be disregarded

Elusivebutterfly Wed 03-Jul-24 10:09:15

Grandmabatty - London also voted strongly to Remain - it wasn't just Scotland. London cannot campaign for independence, being part of England.
Not sure what single word I would use but I think a lot of people are hoping for change
