Mel Stride, Conservative, just hung on in Central Devon, my constituency. A hugely reduced majority. 61 I think.
He has done some good work locally and is quite liked around here.
Nevertheless, thank goodness for a change of government. We need it. It will be interesting to see how Labour do.

MayBee70 Fri 05-Jul-24 11:51:45

I’ve only just realised Tobias Ellwood has gone. Are there any decent Conservatives left?

fancythat Fri 05-Jul-24 10:22:42

But the next Election is 5 years away.
A lot of things will have changed by then.

fancythat Fri 05-Jul-24 10:22:03

Galaxy

Yes it was they got 4 seats. However they came second in 98 seats.

2nd in 98 seats?
No wonder political commentators keep talking about him.

Overall - relief the last government have gone - not expecting anything quickly - liked Starmers speech - tough time for them ahead.

Thank goodness Galloway gone - tho I am L Party, regret Penny Mordaunt, as tho not a supporter, she was a more moderate Conservative, and I don't want the opposition to go further to the right - shocked by events around Jess Phillips - not sure what protesters on Gaza expect L party to "do" - feel that tho there won't be great steps forward in NHS/Social Care/ education they are safer in Labour hands

to quote Bumface
"I am very aware of the danger to democracy that the Reform party poses and I think that we must be very wary of them."

Whitewavemark2 Fri 05-Jul-24 08:47:19

The Gaza issue is clear and Starmer will need to deal with it asap.

There are more independents 5. Than green 4 or Reform 4

Galaxy Fri 05-Jul-24 08:40:52

Er those protests have always been about intimidation. Surely nobody is surprised.

I’ve just seen a brief clip of Jess Phillips trying to speak after holding on to her marginal seat. She was silenced by a group shouting Shame on You and Free Free Palestine. She said this is the worst election campaign she’s experienced. One if her female activists filmed and followed by a group of men who then slashed the tyres on her car.
Dreadful

Awful.

We are a much more divide country. People shouldn't be shocked or ignore how well Reform have done. Only a few seats but plenty of votes. It would be a mistake to dismiss them or their fears.

merlotgran Fri 05-Jul-24 08:18:08

Thanks, Galaxy. I did think the predicted 14 seats was a bit ambitious.

Galaxy Fri 05-Jul-24 08:13:14

Actually I hope I have just given accurate information grin. Those are the figures I am seeing being bandied about.

merlotgran Fri 05-Jul-24 08:08:49

How many seats did Reform get? I know Nigel Farage is now an MP but am wondering if the exit poll prediction for them was exaggerated.

Not sure where to begin really.

we now have a boring prime minister who puts public service before self service.

Isn’t it great!!

And we got our 4 Green seats..

What a boring voice Starmer has. Hope his policies are better than his presentation. Budgerigar.

Is that all you can say about him. What about the content of his speech. Was that boring too. If he’s so boring why put yourself through having to listen to him? You don’t have to.

I switched off after 5 minutes of it, don’t worry.

Well you won’t be listening to much during the next 5 years😄

Jess Philips looked terribly shaken I thought. She just clung on though thank goodness.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 07:38:00

That's disgusting.

Not really

I just don't get this bizarre jubilation. It's just politics . Nothing much will change.

Some people are behaving like football fans when their team has won.

It’s really nothing like football. I’m a footie fan so I can tell the difference between sport and politics.

wendyann23 Fri 05-Jul-24 07:27:20

So pleased Liz Truss has gone, she was a great deal to blame for the mess the conservatives were in. And she was so ungracious in defeat, making them wait to declare the result as she would not go on stage originally. Then she walked off without speaking. Total opposite from the way Penny Mordaunt handled her defeat. Think Penny Mordaunt is a great loss to the Conservatives.

Joseann Fri 05-Jul-24 07:24:46

I think if England wins in Düsseldorf on Saturday, the election results will be completely eclipsed! ⚽️ ⚽️

Oh I am delighted Penny Mordaunt has lost her seat.

BigBertha1 Fri 05-Jul-24 07:12:41

I am pleased with the result nationally but not locally. I agree with Penny Mordant. The government didn't listen and the have almost broken the NHS. Is it retrievable? Not without radical change.....yet again.

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 05-Jul-24 07:09:25

I’ve just been catching up. The lettuce has gone. Yippee.

We now have a LibDem MP. It had been Tory since Moses was a boy.
