Labour win a historic victory

Just seen Scarlett MccGwire on TV. She has been Labour all her life and was a Labour advisor. She says she is not jubilant or triumphant today because she recognises that Labour has a massive job to do in fulfilling all their promises. Never thought I would hear her say that as she has argued for months that Labour should and will win and will make sweeping changes.

In the meantime I am going out to buy candles and fleece blankets as I remember what Labour’s Winters of Discontent were like! ❄️

My constituency remained Conservative, not as big a majority as before though.

Labour got in as usual where we are.
I’m hoping that that means an end to excuses that a Tory government means they can’t do x, y and z.
My DGS, voting for the first time, asked me

“They all tell lies. How do you choose?”

I told him to read the manifestos, listen to the propaganda, watch the TV and know that nothing good that they say, is written in stone once they get into power.

He told me he voted Reform.

Our voting system is guaranteed to give governments elected by a minority - Johnson only had 40% of the vote yet claimed a mandate for Brexit. Glad the Greens got 4 seats - let’s hope they get as much publicity as Reform with the same number.

When Starmer uses "we" throughout his speech he's referring to the Labour Party, not himself. Nowhere does he take individual credit for the result.

I think we need to look and listen to what the young people are saying. Just seen a 19 year old lad on TV who has voted for the first time. He says that Reform is the most followed party on social media because they give clear ideas and promises. He also said Labour have not won, the Conservatives have lost.
Starmer has built a sandcastle and it will likely be washed away in a few years time.

Labour are calling it a landslide but it was a poor turnout and 2 out of 3 people did NOT vote for Labour.

On a personal note there is a ring of steel going around our savings and investments that we have worked our entire lives for. I do not trust Labour one inch.

Great news! Perhaps we can start hoping for a government with the good of the people at its heart, with understanding and compassion.

I'm surprised and delighted that for the first time Cornwall is coloured red and yellow only, with not even a splash of blue! That's a HUGE turn around!

And I'm so pleased that the Greens did well, and that Jeremy Corbyn kept his seat as an independent.

After four hours sleep and although there are more results to come in I am thrilled to bits for Starmer and the whole Labour team.

They have endured 14 years of helplessness whilst the Tories dismantled this country bit by bit and creamed off the money with which they will now make sure is safely put away somewhere.

Robert Buckland's speech expressed everything the honest Tories (few though they are) have been feeling every since Johnson was elected.

The people have spoken and the noise they made was for change.

Starmer has a lot of work to do and he knows it, but seeing Truss, Rees-Mogg, Mordant and others get their just desserts has renewed my faith in the British people.

In some ways I am glad Farage and Anderson won their seats, because now those who voted for them will see how fragile the illusion they created will be. They also have a lot of work to do and we all know Farage is nothing but an attention loving freeloader.

Ed Davey fought a great campaign and I am genuinely pleased for his party, and also for the Greens.

I think from my perspective it has been a good day for democracy, from now on Parliament will be a much healthier place.

I really hope so.

The odious George Galloway gone ? The appalling Liz Truss gone? Smug Rees Mogg gone? Reasons to be cheerful for starters.

I think percentage of votes can be misleading as I think there was a lot of tactical voting. I think this benefitted the lib dems in particular as in strong Tory seats a vote for labour would have been wasted.

I have just seen that Jacob Rees Mogg has lost his seat. This is very good news, along with Liz Truss losing hers.

Whoever we got and I voted labour, it was high time for a change. Goodbye loathsome Rees mogg, shame hunt kept his. Most hated person in the nhs when he was health secretary. I worked in the nhs for years

At one point Reform was almost neck to neck with the Conservatives in the predicted number of seats. So that is something to think about.

As for the Lib Dems, for the first time since I got the vote in 1964, my vote counted. Standing on a high hill in Oxfordshire, all I can see is a sea of yellow, everywhere is yellow, Witney, Wantage & Didcot, Newbury, Henley, Bicester, Oxford Wesst & Abingdon.

Yellow has always been my favourite colour! I am dressed all in yellow today to celebrate.

They have an uphill battle but hopefully the emphasis, obsession even, on lowering taxes at the expense of public services will be over.
