Sunak's Speech

I thought Sunak's speech today was very good and humble and he clearly loves this country. He's a decent man who had a short time to try and achieve the impossible, but he did bring down inflation.

Varian , well said. Both men gave excellent speeches and both men appear to be decent .
I'm sure it was the right wing of the Tories with their jostling for position which caused their downfall. It's a shame some of them didn't lose their seat.
Starmer has often said country first party second , so it will be good to see this in practice.

Varian- you took the words right out of my mouth. Listening to Sunak's speech and then Starmer's made me feel proud to be British again for the first time in 14 years.

Both leaders spoke very well, acknowledging their opponents as decent politicians who wanted to do their best for our country.

There was no-one claiming that the election was rigged or stolen. No-one telling blatant lies. No-one indulging in playground bullying and personal insults.

We can be proud that in the UK we can have a speedy, uncontentious and peaceful transfer of power.

In fact, watching Sunak and Starmer reminded me again that despite our difficulties, this remains a decent country . The contrast with the USA is huge. Look over to France, unhappy with the election? Riot and burn.

Yes, I think both Starmer and Sunak gave good speeches, and both come across as decent people, regardless of their political affiliation or policies

Agreed Doodledog.

Good speech. A decent man held back by his right wing.
A decent politician wouldn’t back Anderson or Braverman

I agree.

Truss, Kwarteng, Johnson and the right-wing factions in the Tories lost this election.

Sunak is a decent man but perhaps not strong enough to unite the party.

I thought it was a very gracious speech, sinerely given. As was also Keir Starmer's speech paying tribute to Rishi Sunak.

I completely agree

Me too. Both speeches hit exactly the right note and show that they are both good decent men.Rare in politics.

I noticed last night that when Clive Myrie/ Laura Kuennsberg asked politicians (Andrea Leadsom, Jacob R M and someone else) why they hadn’t done more to support RS they just grinned sheepishly. His party didn’t give him a chance

Resentment? Seen as an outsider? Maybe it was just past time when things could be held together any more.

A gracious humble speech.

I agree M0nica. Both were fine and gracious speeches. Although my politics do not align with his, I believe Rishi Sunak is a decent man. Something seemingly rare in the Tory party.

I do understand Monica but my point was that inflation may have reduced but the hugely increased costs, often doubling, means many people still struggle for basics. This despite us being the sixth wealthiest country in the world.
Certainly there is wealth in this country, but it is limited to a small elite group.

M0nica Fri 05-Jul-24 17:01:46

silbelining48 bringing down inflation doesn't mean cutting prices, it means lowing the rate of the increase.

If inflation last year was 10%. It means, on average prices went up by 10%. If inflation is halved, it simply means that this year, last years prices, which will incorporate the 10% rise in prices will only go up by another 5% instead of another 10%.

Prices going down would be descibed as 'deflation' and that isn't happening

silverlining48 Fri 05-Jul-24 16:35:27

Yes it was a gracious speech, as was Starmer’s too, but if he has brought down inflation, which they say they have, then why is it we are still paying so much more for everything? All it means is the cost of everything has stopped increasing, but costs remain high.

Had I not lived a fairly frugal life and saved a little over the years, my utility bills alone would barely be covered by my low, ie pre 2016 pension.

I felt a bit sorry for him but he should have backed Lee Anderson and Suella Braverman because he didn't people switched to Reform.

TG he had the integrity not to.

Grandmabatty Fri 05-Jul-24 12:36:33

I don't like his brand of politics and have disliked the combative way he spoke at times, however it was a decent speech.

Pittcity Fri 05-Jul-24 12:35:23

Why can't politicians always be humble, truthful decent people?

It was a very dignified speech and he did say sorry a couple of times which is almost unheard of.

Earlier this morning I saw a panel of guests on TV and they all said that thought RS was a decent and honest man. One man who I think was a politician said in the years he has known him he has never heard anybody say they dislike him.
