Sunak's Speech

I thought Sunak's speech today was very good and humble and he clearly loves this country. He's a decent man who had a short time to try and achieve the impossible, but he did bring down inflation.

nanna8 Fri 05-Jul-24 11:55:38

I was very impressed by it. He is a decent bloke.

Wyllow3 Fri 05-Jul-24 11:59:36

He has a welcome decency and a good speech tho I disagree with his policies of course.

If Conservatives are sensible they will keep him as they are in disarray. Does he want to stay, tho?

B9exchange Fri 05-Jul-24 12:02:00

He has already said he is going, as soon as they can find a reasonable replacement! Decent man, but not a leader, out of his depth.

maddyone Fri 05-Jul-24 12:02:06

He probably wants to go, but he probably needs to stay for a while at least.
I don’t think he’ll fight the next election, I think he’ll have resigned as an MP long before that.

I haven’t heard his speech l

Smileless2012 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:02:49

If the Conservatives were sensible they'd never have elected Liz Truss.

ronib Fri 05-Jul-24 12:02:55

I am very surprised that this is the first speech Sunak delivered which has a good and direct connection with his audience.

Better late than never? Or why did it not happen before the wipeout?

Siope Fri 05-Jul-24 12:03:11

It’s a shame he didn’t govern using the principles he espoused in that speech.

ronib Fri 05-Jul-24 12:04:02

So what stopped him Siope?

Smileless2012 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:04:14

It's a shame the party wouldn't allow him too.

Musicgirl Fri 05-Jul-24 12:05:08

A good, decent man who clearly loves his country and has done some good things with regards to the economy. Unfortunately, he was handed a poisoned chalice and is not a strong leader. I wish him well for the future, whatever he decides to do.

So what stopped him Siope?

The right wing of how own party, and not having enough political capital (in part because members were excluded from his selection) to manage a divided party.

Siope Fri 05-Jul-24 12:10:05

His own, not how own.

Nicenanny3 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:16:52

I felt a bit sorry for him but he should have backed Lee Anderson and Suella Braverman because he didn't people switched to Reform.

Primrose53 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:20:44

It was a very dignified speech and he did say sorry a couple of times which is almost unheard of.

Earlier this morning I saw a panel of guests on TV and they all said that thought RS was a decent and honest man. One man who I think was a politician said in the years he has known him he has never heard anybody say they dislike him.

Iam64 Fri 05-Jul-24 12:20:50

Good speech. A decent man held back by his right wing.
A decent politician wouldn’t back Anderson or Braverman

Yes, this.

Pittcity Fri 05-Jul-24 12:35:23

Why can't politicians always be humble, truthful decent people?

Grandmabatty Fri 05-Jul-24 12:36:33

I don't like his brand of politics and have disliked the combative way he spoke at times, however it was a decent speech.

TG he had the integrity not to.

I thought it was a very gracious speech, sinerely given. As was also Keir Starmer's speech paying tribute to Rishi Sunak.

silverlining48 Fri 05-Jul-24 16:35:27

Yes it was a gracious speech, as was Starmer’s too, but if he has brought down inflation, which they say they have, then why is it we are still paying so much more for everything? All it means is the cost of everything has stopped increasing, but costs remain high.

Had I not lived a fairly frugal life and saved a little over the years, my utility bills alone would barely be covered by my low, ie pre 2016 pension.

M0nica Fri 05-Jul-24 17:01:46

silbelining48 bringing down inflation doesn't mean cutting prices, it means lowing the rate of the increase.

If inflation last year was 10%. It means, on average prices went up by 10%. If inflation is halved, it simply means that this year, last years prices, which will incorporate the 10% rise in prices will only go up by another 5% instead of another 10%.

Prices going down would be descibed as 'deflation' and that isn't happening

silverlining48 Fri 05-Jul-24 17:30:18

I do understand Monica but my point was that inflation may have reduced but the hugely increased costs, often doubling, means many people still struggle for basics. This despite us being the sixth wealthiest country in the world.
Certainly there is wealth in this country, but it is limited to a small elite group.

I agree M0nica. Both were fine and gracious speeches. Although my politics do not align with his, I believe Rishi Sunak is a decent man. Something seemingly rare in the Tory party.
