I don’t totally disagree with either early release or with different ways of treating criminals instead of imprisonment, but those who suggest early release should be more open on what they plan to do with those early released.
More importantly, on what basis the crime will be assessed as suitable for early release. The non-serious violent crime category you mentioned earlier is very worrying.

There are better and more equitable ways to reduce the size of the House of Lords, than this simplistic, ageist route.

Doing it straight after giving Margaret Beckett, who is 81 and Margaret Hodge, who will be 80 in September, life peerages seems a bit of a misstep too.

I haven’t read that that’s exactly what the government said, but if it’s true, the second part of that word is a good description.

On May 15, Starmer challenged Sunak over plans for early release of prisoners, but now it’s evidently OK.

We will have to wait for release of plans for what those released, or those not incarcerated under the new rules will be expected to do.

After his first official bilateral talks with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, at the Nato summit in Washington, the prime minister confirmed the military aid would continue until at least 2030-31.

Prison crises.

Earlier this week we saw that the prisons were in severe crises.

This week the government is acting to begin to address the crises and will announce plans on Friday to release prisoners early to stop jails becoming full.

Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is expected to set out a suite of emergency measures to free up space in prisons.

The main measure will be automatically releasing prisoners on “standard determinate sentences” after they have served 40% of their sentence, government sources confirmed.

There will be exemptions for sexual and serious violent offenders.
