For those feeling nervous over the governments competence and who believe the propaganda put out by the right wing media, I thought I would start recording the day by day development of the governments activity.

Day 1
The PM appointed the cabinet, and was briefed by the permanent secretary.

The PM gave advice over urgent domestic issues needing immediate attention, as well as urgent security matters.

The Prime Minister signed off letters to the heads of the military, giving instructions over action in case of nuclear threat.

The Prime Minister will begin preparations for his NATO visit to Washington next week.

Sir Keir Starmer will have decided domestic issues over his living arrangements etc.

The Home Secretary -Yvette Cooper - killed the Rwanda plan. However it was disclosed by the Home Office that there was in fact no such plan in operation - no work had been carried out on any plan for months. So my goodness - was that one of the last lies told to the public by the previous government?

NHS

The Prime Minister said that the NHS is broken - and all decisions will flow from that fact.

The waiting list

A number of hospitals have set up a successful model to begin to clear the backlog, and Streeting has been involved with them for months.

This model will be rolled out across the entire NHS to begin the work of clearing the backlog.

The NHS have been working to clear the backlog for the last couple of years. This is nothing new.

I have had appointments with consultants on Saturdays, and 2 friends have had major surgery on Sundays. I had a booked scan at 7.30pm one evening.

Yes, this is nothing new and Labour can’t claim credit for it. Much more progress would have been made had it not been for the numerous strikes.

Indeed. Last year under the Conservatives I had a minor op at our regional hospital. doctors, nurses and assistant anaesthetists were brought up from the Portland Clinic in London to help. It was brilliant.

I also know loads of people who have had hip, knee and back surgery in private hospitals on the NHS.

Using private hospitals for NHS operations goes back to Tony Blair.

I fully agree M0nica but it is rather impressive to have things properly spelled out, as it shows that thought rather than knee jerk reaction has been applied, doubtless over many months. Of course “events dear boy” will come along and disrupt their plans but at least they have clearly thought out plans for most of the really critical issues, even if we all know it is going to take years to solve the disasters of the recent past.

My question is “will Rwanda give us (the UK taxpayers) back the money they were given for the stupid Rwanda scheme?”As nothing is happening now? We want the millions back!
Or is it more money lost ?

The country is in a mess and I felt inspired by Keir Starmer's speech outside Number 10.

I think we should get behind him and try to do our bit to help things get better.

I breathed a sigh of relief last week because I wanted to see the back of the Tories, their incompetence and disregard for the ordinary folk of this country.

Absolutely, albertina. I couldn't agree more!

DD2 left after a year because of the workload. She said she wanted evenings and weekends to herself. I asked her about the holidays. After a year without, she said she didn’t miss the long holidays, because they weren’t really that long anyway.
The young teacher who left our place after a couple of years said it was the workload and the straight jacket.
I don’t know what they think now.
We’ve adapted to so many changes, some sensible, some incomprehensible, plus OFSTED and league tables.
If the young ones want something better, I hope it happens.

I’ve mentioned this on another thread, but delighted to see James Timpson appointed Minister for prisons, probation and parole.

In fact, delighted to see a range of Ministers selected for their knowledge, experience and expertise in their respective fields.

I have to say, as someone who has not been a Starmer fan, my opinion is changing as a result of his speech, Reeves’ speech, and Starmer’s decisions so far.

Ha ha you mean like Minister for Further Education who fiddled her expenses and even charged for two pornographic films which were apparently for her husband. 🤣
Cracking choice of Minister there! 😝
shows real “knowledge, experience and expertise”.

I also have a pretty good idea why teachers are leaving growstuff, but it would take almost a revolution in the ideology of those at the top to change things. As an ex teacher, I’m not sure it can be done, but I really hope it can. I wouldn’t advise anyone to go into teaching these days.

^Maybe the place to start would be to stop the massive exodus of teachers in their five years after training^

Agreed. But how?
What do you suggest?

You'd have to talk to young teachers themselves rather than an old-timer like me. I would start by talking to the people at the "chalk face" rather than trying to impose ideological changes from the top by people who have hardly ever been inside a classroom themselves. I have a pretty good idea why so many are leaving, but that would be second-hand - better to find out from the "horse's mouth".

Thank goodness we are starting to calm down as a country.Keir Starmer and his government seem to have done more good things over the weekend than the squabbling Tories did in two years. It is refreshing that the right wing media are not getting leaks about Labour policies in advance.Let them do their jobs as journalists for a change.Keir is a genuine football fan,why should he not fly the flag of St George over 10 Downing Street. Let’s hope the team wins on Wednesday!

Farage is just like a small dog all bark no bite. He can’t challenge what the government are doing about immigration if he had no plan himself. Hopefully the people who are so passionate about immigration will finally realise over the next few years that immigration wasn’t the problem at all, but the government.

Lots of fine ideas as with every new government! And the usual blame games for the last administration! I remain cynical about the outcomes I’m afraid. Seen it all before for too many years now.

Cynicism will get us nowhere. Nothing will ever change.
Exactly what I thought after Brexit.
It’s done, so support it.
I voted remain, but am cynical about the blame posted on Leavers, when over 1.25million more of them at least bothered to vote.

Susieq62 Mon 08-Jul-24 11:31:12

I am so excited for this breath of fresh air with a human work ethic. My first female MP for my constituency is raring to go and feels honoured to represent us. That will do for me, a hard working sensible approach to local issues as well as experience in the social care sector. She will be fine .
It is refreshing to see excitement around the cabinet table but there is a long road ahead.

Wwm2 surely pressure on hospitals will increase if problems are picked up early as GP surgeries do not have operating tables and have very limited diagnostic machinery?

Often things picked up earlier, are easier to treat, and don't always need hospital input. Many surgeries have small theatres in which minor surgeries can be done. Much better to catch earlier, than too late to help anyone. Echo cardiograms, US scans can all be done outside hospital.

I agree with you 100%. A skilled GP can sometimes pick up on problems before the patient is even aware.

Even cataract surgery is done at one of our large surgeries, so no hospital involved.

*There are some areas of genuine outstanding natural beauty, which should be protected*

They are not building houses on these areas just wind farms, pylons etc. tourists will not want to come to north Scotland soon as the scenery is being blotted out. This electricity is not for us, we even pay more than further south. The government need to start spreading the load and put wind turbines down motorways, solar panels over car parks where the electricity is most needed.

Recently in Almere, Netherlands, beautiful place, as you travel along the motorway wind turbines as far as the eye can see, on the edges of fields,so it doesn't interfered with the farming. Why can't they do that here? Instead of destroying good farming land, by plonking them inthe middle of the field.
