The first 100 days.
(1001 Posts)For those feeling nervous over the governments competence and who believe the propaganda put out by the right wing media, I thought I would start recording the day by day development of the governments activity.
Day 1
The PM appointed the cabinet, and was briefed by the permanent secretary.
The PM gave advice over urgent domestic issues needing immediate attention, as well as urgent security matters.
The Prime Minister signed off letters to the heads of the military, giving instructions over action in case of nuclear threat.
The Prime Minister will begin preparations for his NATO visit to Washington next week.
Sir Keir Starmer will have decided domestic issues over his living arrangements etc.
The Home Secretary -Yvette Cooper - killed the Rwanda plan. However it was disclosed by the Home Office that there was in fact no such plan in operation - no work had been carried out on any plan for months. So my goodness - was that one of the last lies told to the public by the previous government?

Jonathan Reynolds The Business secretary is undertaking talks with Tata Steel.
The talks will centre around job loses, which are inevitable as the old technology is replaced with green technology. Reynolds is keen that job loses are managed
The Tories contributed 500 million towards managing the job loses.
Labour has budgeted £2.5bn - but as an investment for green energy/growth, to ensure a quicker transition to the new green technology.
That’s really important Whitewavemark2, I just wish we were in control of at least part of the UK steel production instead of it all being at the mercy of Tata. If Port Talbot does close, even temporarily, we will have lost a vital industry.
Pleased to see Simon Harris reiterating his expectations of a more productive and positive relationship between Irish and UK governments, and confirming they would support the UK if (as, hopefully) it begins to negotiate a revised agreement with the EU.

Yes so am I . It is due for renewal next year I think, so I expect talks will soon be underway.
I am hoping and expecting closer trade ties, I don’t see how growth can easily happen without these closer ties.

Hilary Benn - Northern Ireland. Met the SF first minister O’Neil.
O’Neil said that she was unhappy at the Tory cuts over recent years.
Benn warned the Irish government that they have consistently received more per capita (25%) than other areas of U.K., and must now begin to look for ways to raise their own funding to fill the gap.
The Sinn Fein victory is going to be interesting. They won’t, of course, take their seats in the Commons. That feels to me like a significant proportion of NI voters won’t have anyone there to advocate for them, which seems problematic if you didn’t vote Sinn Fein (I’m assuming those who did are okay with the non-attendance).
And I am also assuming Sinn Fein will start to seriously push for a re-unification referendum before the end of this Parliament, even though Benn said today the conditions weren’t met - I don’t know how many votes Sinn Fein received, off to Google madly, unless anyone knows?

Answering myself, nationalist parties 40% vote share, loyalist parties 43%, Alliance (who I believe have no known position) 15%.

To set a a new border command post within weeks, who will report directly to Cooper.
Cooper has said that there will substantial additional resources.
Cooper is due to speak to the head of Europol this week and will make contact with her European counterparts at the upcoming summit.

Private investment is expected, always clear that it was to be a partnerships, and discussions already have been underway.
The CBI supported Labour and Reeves has been busy meeting leaders in finance and business for some time now.
Don't we all want our solar panels and wind turbines made as much as possible in the UK? There are a few firms but this would be a boost both for green energy and jobs.

To Tata,? It was £500million.
But the Tories had no plan for investment or growth. That £500 million was just to keep people in jobs if Tata would play ball.

The £2.5bn as far as I understand is for investment in green transition in Port Vale - Tata is expected to meet them with similar I think.

"Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has set out the first steps towards setting up a UK Border Security Command, which the government hopes will reduce small boat crossings in the English Channel.
Work to recruit an "exceptional leader" to head the body will begin on Monday, with the government preparing a bill to create counter-terror powers aimed at tackling organised immigration crime.
The Home Office says the command leader - expected to be appointed within weeks - would draw together work of intelligence agencies, police, Immigration Enforcement and Border Force"
Very early days, they also have to start making connections with safe countries so that those arriving not deemed to be refugees can be returned. And enough officers to carry out the assessments including huge backlog, no easy answers there.
