French police stand by and watch the boats leave for Britain. Now you are in charge Yvette Cooper what's your plan after you cancelled the Rwanda deterrent?

I completely agree with ID cards but worry about the black market trade in fakes.

Urmstongran Fri 12-Jul-24 18:05:11

I’m another with the idea of ID cards. Mandatory in Spain. We carried ours no problema. The police we saw out and about frequently asked to see ID in certain situations. I think it makes one feel safer. Europe has the right idea on this imo. Plus as France reminds us, it would stop many illegals migrants working ‘cash in hand’. That’s another reason why they head over here apparently. Think car washes, the curry mile …
We squeal but are too soft in the UK.

Sago

We once sat in a queue of traffic to get on a ferry at Calais, the queue was extremely long and slow moving, we watched as two young immigrants tried to break into a caravan, French Police were stood by chatting, someone alerted them, they sauntered over and shooed them away.

There is very little appetite for the French to sort this, it’s better it becomes our problem than theirs!

I would love to know the cost to the taxpayers of keeping these men in the UK, will they be entitled to pensions eventually, what about health care, what if they become parents, end up in prison etc?

Meanwhile we have ex servicemen sleeping on the streets.

Our friend had a migrant hanging onto the driveshaft of his Motohome. He has a huge American motohome. It’s never once been thoroughly serched.
The same with us. On a rough estimate we have crossed from Calais to Dover 20 times.
No one has ever looked in the bathroom where at least 6 people could hide.
Under the banquette you could get 2 people.
The boot could hide 6.
We tow a Smart car. They’ve never looked in that.
All the border guards have ever done is a walk through.

Wyllow3 thanks for explaining the situation upthread was not as it seemed... but pleased that those entitled to be here ate being looked after.

If only the processing of applications was quicker and more accurate!

^You can’t get much more friendly and co-operative than paying them megabucks^

GSM not everything can be solved by simply chucking money at it. Maybe a genuine, respectful working relationship between the UK and France will be a better place to start. The new government aims to achieve this.

I’m sure you’re not that naive Lizzie. If words and money don’t work, why should mere words do so? It’s not in the interests of France to prevent people coming here in boats or otherwise is it?

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 17:28:53

I can actually spell bus
grin
The iPad can’t though

Callistemon213 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:27:35

I agree, maddyone.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 17:26:59

I think we should have ID cards.
People are quick enough to get themselves a bus pass, a passport, or a driving licence when they want one. What could a reasonable objection be to carrying one more buss pass sized card in your wallet, alongside the zillions of credit cards, store loyalty cards, buss pass, driving license, library card etc.
If you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear.

I have just finished reading 'The Lightless Sky by Gulwali Passarlay. He was 12 years old when his mother, desperate to get him away from the Taliban, paid traffickers to get her son to Europe. It's a heart rendering story. A book everyone should read. Yes, there are many economic migrants but it's a very complex dilema for any Government.

Joseann Fri 12-Jul-24 17:21:46

Yes, LizzieDrip. At least Starmer endeared himself to the French more by not running off home during the DDAY commemorations!

Mollygo Fri 12-Jul-24 17:18:51

Regarding identity cards, I’m all in favour and I was last time this came up. Successive governments have agreed/disagreed about them
in 1995, Tony Blair demanded that "instead of wasting hundreds of millions of pounds on compulsory ID cards as the Tory Right demand, let that money provide thousands more police officers on the beat in our local communities
The battle raged on throughout Labour’s term in office. I read that Gordon Brown decided not to implement the £7billion scheme but to tighten up laws on terrorism.

Sinn Féin was anti ID cards back then, arguing that the potential for harvesting and misusing data was too great.
Labour then introduced them at a cost of £30 per card, but when they lost the election Theresa May said the scheme would be scrapped.
There have been calls for ID since then, but when you think of the arguments about voter ID even on GN it’s no wonder it hasn’t happened.

This report I read on the BBC though the url is nz,
implies that the battle is not yet over.

Or even a dozen times judging by those who think these are just empty words on here.

Yes GG13, I mentioned that this morning. When we crossed to France and back last month they weren't even checking the dog's paperwork which in the past was a big palaver! grin

Sorry Joseann to metaphorically ^step on your toes^

Not at all GG13. Sometimes, it needs saying twice to be believed!

But do Europe want a more friendly, co-operative relationship with us?
Especially if it means keeping even more migrants. There are already many in France and other countries.

I don’t know, but nothing else has worked. 🤷‍♀️

From now until the end of the Olympics the people traffickers have got carte blanche No doubt they are laughing all the way to the bank 💶💶💶💶💶

The majority of the police who (allegedly) patrol the beaches have been deployed in and around Paris.

Joseann Fri 12-Jul-24 16:57:41

As I hear it, the French are making the most of playing piggy in the middle. They want Britain to be more co-operative over this issue, but they also want Italy to stop migrants crossing over their border. Basically, they don't want to be inundated, like no one else does.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 16:57:24

I really don’t think anyone on here is blaming a week old government. Probably everyone of us want whatever the new government has planned to be successful. No one expects results tomorrow, but it would be nice to have some idea of what the government is planning and how it intends to proceed. They have had many years in opposition to think about this, it’s hardly been classified information, and so it’s not unreasonable for people to wonder what might happen.

Yes, I know the Tories did that. As they gave hundreds of millions to Rwanda on a fool’s errand.

Hopefully, we can get a better system now.

It’s pointless blaming a week old Labour government for 14 years of Tory mismanagement. 🤷‍♀️

I thought it had been established that it cannot be stopped in the Channel.

It couldn’t with the last lot because there was so much aggro with Brexit.

Labour have said they want a more friendly, co-operative relationship with Europe.
