It wasn't a gun apparently. Its up live on I player.

What was the weapon? It killed one person.

Of course it was a gun, what numpty says it wasn’t?

It must have been reported!

See first page - The very very first reports across 3 sources said popping noises, which I reported, then follow up when I came back in I said it was a gun. I presume initial reports were careful until confirmation.

Shocking incident. I hope we find out the "why's" of the shooter, and how he was able to get such a powerful weapon.

My sympathy is for the bystanders killed and seriously injured. Amercia loves its guns, as does Trump.
Why would it make any difference to the election? Sounds like Trump has come out unscathed. Business as usual, but not for the families affected. Their lives are changed for good.

I remember when Jo Brand asked “why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?”.

When David Aaronovitch said “if I was Biden I'd hurry up and have Trump murdered”.

Liberal intolerance is clear for all to see. (Nigel Farage today)

The same can be seen on here it seems to me. The hateful left.

Just that I havent googled to confirm.
The "encouraging to civil war and assasination" part.

^In January 2020 (have I got the year right?) the defeated President Trump was encouraging his supporters to civil war and assassination of key political figures.^

Well if that is correct, that is very bad behaviour too.

Doesnt make other people making comments like that, any less bad or unloving, behaviour.

What do you mean "If that is correct"?

The 6th January attempt at insurrection never happened?
Or do you believe that Trump wasn't involved in any way?

fancythat Sun 14-Jul-24 10:19:56

And still all sickening.

I do wonder if this will make him think twice about advocating violence and supporting the gun lobby or if it will make him more determined that everyone should be armed to protect themselves.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 14-Jul-24 10:16:29

I sincerely hope that the security and law informers have a handle on this. I think the USA has been very volatile over the past few years.

It only took an assassination to start WW1, and fear of civil war is not so far fetched.

I think that Wwmk2's comment is apt.

This thread is sickening.

I naively did not realise people carry around such hate in their hearts.

The weapon was a rifle with telescopic sights.
What struck me about Trump following the assassination attempt was that he was virtually fighting off the attempts of his security police to get him into the van, so determined was he to appear triumphant and death defying. oblivious to the fact that they were creating a human shield and could easily be shot themselves.
Hitler survived several assassination attempts.

He was clearly in shock and relieved he wasn’t killed. Do you think in those few minutes he had time to devise a cunning plan or to think rationally?

Callistemon213 Sun 14-Jul-24 09:59:43

"President Joe Biden has condemned the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, calling on all Americans to denounce such "sick" violence."

My daughter went on a friends birthday clay pigeon shoot years ago.

We all laughed but apparently she shot nearly every pot (or whatever they are).. The instructor and her friends wouldn't believe she'd never done anything like it before and lots of teasing ensured.

I think, like Primrose's son, some people are "naturals" at some things. This is just another skill.

Have you seen the photo of him fist pumping with the flag behind and security wrestling him out of the stadium?

Looks just like the iconic photo of soldiers raising the flag in Iwo Jima, Ww2.

This has defined the election, it is his to win.

You’re absolutely right I think, just saw it on the news.If he had cringed away and hid it wouldn’t have worked in his favour, but being bloodied but unbowed and looking strong it really will help his campaign.

It brings us back to the situation re guns in America. How on earth did a twenty year old get hold of such a powerful gun and learn to use it?

Guns are the norm in the US.
When my son worked out there his colleagues took him to a rifle range of which there are hundreds. He scored very highly and they couldn’t believe he had not shot before.

He also went out into wild and isolated areas and one guy took him to meet his elderly Mum who had her own gun to keep bears and other creatures away. That was the norm too.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 09:26:00

And yet, only last week we had three people killed by a crossbow in England. Apparently crossbow shootings are becoming more common. Apparently a crossbow can be imported into the UK quite easily.
We also had politicians being threatened during our recent elections. I believe Keir Starmer had people demonstrating outside his house during the campaign, about Gaza I think. Other politicians were wearing body armour and needing police protection. Someone upthread said Jacob Rees-Mogg’s children were threatened not so long ago, and of course Jo Cox and David Amoss were murdered in recent years.
