Breaking news.
3 shots.
He's apparently fine.

Cabowich Sun 14-Jul-24 09:22:56

Well, that knocked the football off the headlines!

I'm not a fan of Trump but was shocked on hearing the news this morning.

It brings us back to the situation re guns in America. How on earth did a twenty year old get hold of such a powerful gun and learn to use it?

Galaxy Sun 14-Jul-24 09:20:18

Its customary in Ametica to address ex presidents as such.

NotSpaghetti Sun 14-Jul-24 09:19:48

JenniferEccles, Iam and others - at 1am nobody knew anything really and even the images with blood were ambiguous. It didn't seem then as it does at 5am onwards.

Nobody will think it's a stunt now.

Just saying.

Jaxjacky Sun 14-Jul-24 09:18:22

I wish the media would stop addressing him as President Trump, he’s not POTUS.

last night, when we first heard about this and it was "breaking news" two of my adult children's first thoughts were that it was probably a stunt. It wasn't till 5am that the facts emerged.

Although it wasnt, frankly it could have been a stunt. It wasn't till quite a lot later that news of the gunman and the victims came out.

Your adult children thought that on the basis that they didn’t have enough information. It’s probably best not to jump to conclusions in cases like these.

Have you seen the photo of him fist pumping with the flag behind and security wrestling him out of the stadium?

Looks just like the iconic photo of soldiers raising the flag in Iwo Jima, Ww2.

This has defined the election, it is his to win.

If he had not turned his head slightly to show a chart, he would now be dead. Sadly someone behind him was also shot.

They did the right thing, child or not. You can’t muck about with assassins. I think Trump was very brave , like him or not. As for suggestions that it was a put up job on Trump’s behalf, that is just disgusting.

Yes, as he was up on a roof (I hadn't realised that) he could have continued shooting at people.

I hope Trump's youngest son wasn't there.

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Jul-24 09:15:03

I don’t think for one minute it was a stunt.

Iam64 Sun 14-Jul-24 09:13:15

The suggestion that Trump may have set this up is as dangerous as it is silly. The shot aimed at his head could have killed him had it wavered by inches.
Terrifying incident, one spectator killed and others injured, plus the gunman shot and killed.
I wonder if the truth about who/what organisation is behind this will remain uncertain. Let’s hope peace prevails and Trump and Biden are safe

Sadly I think it makes him more likely to win.
I think you are right.

THE USA will be back to the lawless Wild West.

JenniferEccles Sun 14-Jul-24 09:12:00

What an appalling piece of news to wake up to.
Thank goodness Trump is ok, and that the sniper is dead, but I am so shocked at the few comments on here expressing regret that the gunman missed.

Disagree with Donald Trump yes, but to state that you wish he had been assassinated was simply shameful.

A gun.
I don’t think Trump or anyone deserves shooting, though I’d gladly see him off the election, but the shooter’s lack of consideration for other people is appalling.

I think Trump will flaunt it as a Look at me! I’m still standing opportunity rather than Oh no! I’m endangering others .
Sadly I think it makes him more likely to win.

AR15 Semi automatic long barrelled weapon. Accurate and powerful.

The assassin was on a roof nearby.

The gunman was only 20 years old and now he's dead. Not much more than a child. I doubt he was acting alone. This is so sad and very worrying.

An extreme reaction unless there was no other option.
Now he cannot answer any questions.

Thankyou Maddy, some sanity.

Am I the only person who thinks this may have been staged by Trump? That fist pump; the blood - as someone said above "it's all in the optics."

Absurd comment. having just watched the footage he missed being killed by millimetres.

Callistemon213 Sun 14-Jul-24 08:58:27

It wasn't a gun apparently. Its up live on I player.

What was the weapon? It killed one person.

maddyone Sun 14-Jul-24 08:58:04

No President or candidate deserves to be murdered.

I have no liking for Trump, but the above sentence sums up my feelings. Someone upthread even suggested that Trump may have organised this himself. Even he isn’t stupid enough to risk death in such a way. We should not allow our dislike and fear of Trump becoming President to influence our thoughts and allow us to think that this is in some way either acceptable or desirable. I don’t agree with the death penalty and so I certainly don’t think that any politician, however much I dislike or disagree with their policies, should be assassinated.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 14-Jul-24 08:57:57

I am not a POTUS Trump supporter.

I am saddened once more by the horrific gun culture in USA, and dismayed that a great Country has come to this.

RIP💐

NotSpaghetti Sun 14-Jul-24 08:57:35

Visgirl it was a right to “bear arms in defense of themselves and the state.”
And for game hunting.

I think the gun lobby has twisted the original meaning. I learned this from a lawyer when we lived there. The history of the gun laws is interesting.
