I would think that a former President refusing to accept the result of a legitimate election, inciting his supporters to storm the seat of government and terrify and harm its occupants, and repeatedly declare himself above the law, has something to do with the incendiary state of affairs.

It seems the shooter was just a nutjob ,an outsider who likely had serious mental problems. Sad that the security didn’t pick him up beforehand and save the lives of the onlookers. Looking at a picture of him, he looked younger than his years. How ridiculous that people like him are even allowed to own high powered rifles. They are very different in that country.

Information about the young assassin is sparse so far. I’m sure maddyone’s predictions about what is likely to emerge are accurate. The DM quotes one of his fellow students as saying he was very badly bullied at school.mm

Have you even read or viewed the hate speeches re Trump from both American and British politicians. Perhaps you should listen to the American views , and see the shooters video. As regards comments about security, clearly something went wrong. The nearby buildings would have been assessed weeks if not months ago and security provided according to need. Something clearly went wrong.

And yes, people are amazing - but security have chosen this - as a career - just as police/soldiers/firefighters do.
They know what they are signed up for.

Security starts with a site survey by the secret service weeks in advance apparently and getting him out was slow. He did seem to be fixated on his shoes - why did anyone even listen to him about that - just get him away!

If there had been a second gunman they would have had a second shot at him as he was so exposed while he was waving his arms about.

The gunman was outside the actual venue and not that close.
The gun was an AR high velocity rifle, owned by many Americans. Trump was lucky to just have a graze, others were not.

As someone else mentioned, why were drones not used to survey the whole area?

There is a significant problem with calming the rhetoric against Trump. The problem is that he is a threat to democracy. He is a threat to European security and freedom against Russian imperialism. And these things do not cease to be true because some nutter tried to kill him

I think this incident has brought into sharp relief the difference between American and European culture.

We have recently had two big elections in Europe in the U.K. and France, and both were achieved with the peaceful transfer of power by voters who were willing to transfer their vote rather than remain with their so called tribal loyalties.

Neither appears possible now in the USA.

The USA is completely divided between the two big political parties with only very few people willing to change their vote.

The rhetoric of hate and division is growing to such an extent that even as the gun residue was blowing away, American politicians were blaming the other side without a modicum of evidence using the sort of hate filled language that is becoming normal.

We, in Europe must take note and never allow our politicians to lead us down this path of hate filled divisive rhetoric, because that way lies open to violence and ruin.

Not even an attempt on his life and the death and critical injury of some of his supporters will make Trump try to do something about guns in the USA.
Firstly itv would be almost impossible and also, it would lose him votes.
It’s a sad world.

For what it’s worth I think that this shooting happened because the young man was in some way mentally unstable. Nothing to do with this party or that party, much more to do with the failure in his life and his personality. Watch this space, it’ll be announced soon that he had few or no friends, never had a girlfriend, was a loner, had a dysfunctional family life. Probably no job. Possibly mental health issues sick as bipolar or autism.
And crucially, his father bought the gun apparently, and obviously he had access to it.

American politics generally would seem to be further to the right than here or many other countries and the Democrats are more of a centrist party.

Some Republican supporters would seem to be more fanatical, as evidenced by their storming of the Capitol.

Don't be ridiculous Freya. Firstly, the shooter was a member of the Republican party. Secondly, the Democratic party is hardly a seething hot bed of anarchy, hatred and insurrection. I don't think even Trump would accuse them of that. In fact, if you cast your mind back, it was Trump supporters that came dangerously close to fanaticism when they stormed the White House and drew innocent blood.

Lastly and much more to the point, America is full of gun toting lunatics (especially young men it would seem) who need no excuse or affiliation to kill or cause mayhem. The whole world is quite aware of this and I'm perfectly sure you are too.

Posters who make inflammatory comments like this need to be held accountable.

To infer that Democrats, or those holding liberal / left-wing views are responsible for this man attempting to murder Trump are completely indefensible.

Fanatics, extremists, militants, come in all hues, and they are not limited to the left. In fact they are frequently found to be unstable mis-fits who don't posses any ability for rational political thought.

Quite a few posters dislike Trump - and I'm one of them - but I'm appalled that an attempt was made to assassinate him. And whatever my feelings about the man, I'm mindful of the fact that he has a wife and teenage son (apart from the remainder of his family) who will be hugely impacted by this attempted murder.

There appear to be so many deviants in possession of various types of guns in America, and that is the problem. Not left-wing-liberals.

I have seen that the building was outside the venue and thought to be out of range of guns/rifles.
I am sure there will be huge changes in security now after this failure.

An American news person defined a mass shooting as a shooter actively engaged in attempting to kill people in a populated area. This seems to qualify. Mass murder seems to mean at least 3 people killed.
